Even my fx6300 is only rated for 70
Also did you guys know that azur lane can do the half app thing on android?
I just wish it kept running when it lost focus
what phone do you have? android 9 cant do that at least on samsung
Pixel 3a
ahh your the android 10 one
Yep
nice thing that they fixed this
I am on android 7
except most of its system apps has ads built-in ๐
that thing aside it's a really nice ui
and yeah I can run 2 apps simultaneously since like the last version
wait a minute
7th or 8th gen?
Could 8th gen
wtf are those
Nice one, Microsoft
that was unity telling me to do that

that's because you should have most updates installed
i see how you meant, arch is fully customizable
cause, i installed it, and had no browsers or terminals from plasma KDE

just lab only
@subtle hawk do you know where could I find NXOS 3000 for eve-ng ?
NXOS 9K cant be handled by my current laptop

@flint bobcat yeah, its live cd is very bare bones
and base installation is just enough to boot into terminal
that's why I went with pre-packaged manjaro on my pc because I'm too lazy
weakness disgusts me

Win 7
so many pings and notifications
@subtle hawk company laptop
๐
idk why they didnt give us laptop with win10 yet

But you can upgrade it with their permission right?
nu

Don't complain much if you got something for free
@severe falcon is it possible for one thread to stop another thread in python

but in general, if your threads can communicate with each other, then yes
ok
@violet nexus what's the reason for using Tinycore
6 core gang over here
AMD gang reporting in
1600 ๐ฆ
@gloomy tinsel for laboratory purpose
i would love to try to host a website and then propagate it to multiple networks
via bgp/mpbgp
from tier 1 isp to tier 3 isp
and then distributing it to clients
also i want to try and see how routing works
and also tinycore doesn't consume resources
8086K gang represent
This... this seems fun
i just had a great idea to make a desktop assistant using a raspberry pi, a tiny screen, and turning it into a holographic AI
@subtle hawk the future is real

i just need a really bright screen
Custom Alps board came in

@stone wave @subtle hawk
Black Alps, PBT doubleshots... board was actually tested/cleaned & refurbed this time
Taihao dolch caps?
yup
the caps lock is a bit of an enigma though
usually dell at101s came with a stepped caps lock, regardless of ansi/iso layout
but as you can see this one's uniform
it's a bit loose as well, but loose in the sense that these weren't meant for nonstepped caps lock to begin with
So i got a new headset but if i use spliter at it the audio output were reversed R = L and vice versa, if not the audio output were correct
@stone wave old school technology
@subtle hawk idea for nimi bot during october, change her icon to carabiniere and rename her to captain nimi
LOL
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Does anyone know if the rpi4 has some kind of accelerometer?
I don't have the Raspberry Pi.
I mean literally everything else is taken from phones
@severe falcon I'm pretty sure the accelerometer is a different chip in the phone
Yeah but i was just wondering if they put it on there anyway
Cuz i was thinking about having motion reaction on the desktop waifu hologram
@unborn flicker looks like LZSS variant
but it also packs the literal and repeat bits in some kind of model I couldn't figure out
TBF the N5x is a 3 year old mid-range phone, also I'm amazed you have a working one.
Since weren't they prone to bootloops.

at least IPv6 removed the variable length header
Nexus Phones huh? Surprised to see it alive
@valid acorn Yeah, I have it one. It's the predecessor to the Google Pixel.
Yeah, it's still in working condition. Formerly by brother used it previously before it got damaged by water, but they finally fixed the water damage a few years ago.
DROP DATABASE Brain
So i tried VR for the first time today, i thought i wouldnt need my glasses but OH BOI i was wrong
^ depends on the person, whether they need to where it or not
I mean i can read at that distance without my glasses, meaning the oculus's lenses do weird things
New graphics card later this week hopefully
So today is the Android dayโฆ
my first smartphone
Back in time when QWERTY keyboards are built in for smartphones.
Brings back memories
Any tech retrospective stories?
How about the old Nokia 3310?
We used to have Nokia 3210 for my parents back in 2000, I was 7 years old back then.
The Composer feature was a nice feature to create your own ringtones.
Reminds me of the old ringtone
Is there anyone whomst familiar with BIND?
Yay, I love it when sample output does the wrong calculations...
Makes it really great to make sure your code works correctly =/
Does anyone own a ThinkPad?
whats the best way to clean mechanical kb such as the k95, and how often should i clean it?
whats a good new phone
iPhone 11 Pro Max depends on your needs
good camera good display can play azur lane/gfl
New mid-spec budget phones like mine can play AL
S10 is high end
What's your budget
around the base s10 area

the oneplus seems interesting
no headphone jack
that would necessitate me to get the bluetooth module
or the asus ROG/ROG 2 phone
How big do you want the screen to be?
not really concerned with that as long it isn't too large
currently have a lenovo p2, around 5.5"
so both would be an increase anyways

what a tough decision to make
s10 vs 7pro
your guys thoughts on it
mind u
the 7 pro has a wider screen
so if u have smol hands it's gonna be hard to hold it
while samsung displays are narrower but taller

hope it doesn't flop like the galaxy fold
also 7pro ftw
oxygen os > one UI anyday
would recommend 7 pro too
flagship Samsung phones here has exynos instead of snapdragon
@subtle hawk exynos gang
I has in the exynos gang, but now I'm back in the Snapdragon gang
and?
not like you write kernels or microcode to care what SoC you have under the hood
same thing with intel and amd
not a fair comparison
android is heavily abstracted
ah
while on pc programs can be written to use very specific implementations
TL;DR Silion on mobile devices doesn't matter as much as on laptops/desktops
More the matter of performance here tho
exactly
That's what we're talking about
and here exynos and snapdragon SoCs perform marginally the same
as for the skin
the choice is up to the individual
I'm personally more a fan of AOSP/Pixel look and feel
isn't it region-specific
but One UI isn't bad too
not rlly
it's manufacturer based
I see
oneplus uses OxygenOS
samsung uses one UI
I heard that the s10/note 10 series devices are the first ones to try the One UI 2.0
xiaomi uses MIUI
I'm still on 1.1
I'll have to check when I get home for the September update
if I need to buy a new phone I would go for either mi 9 or oneplus 7
I don't know
I'm not focused on cameras or gimmicks I rarely use
my choice boiled down to S10+ 5G or Note 10+
the latter doesn't have headphone jack
so you can guess which I chose

Flyme has some cool features but wow is it stingy with RAM and permissions and shit
we have a type c dac now though
because my brother uses iPad pro
I use true wireless earbuds but the headphone jack is very handy for that aux cable
when I dock the phone in my car
get that gucci sound in
You have your options for your new phone: with or without the jack
Guys, I just installed Fedora Linux MATE spin.
Fedora MATE is one of my favorites
I just installed it on my Toshiba laptop. I'm planning to install Steam for Linux.
Fedora MATE is a close second...
I prefer Ubuntu MATE mainly because dnf is dog slow
Though eventually I'd like to actually get an Arch install working properly
I'm a Debian, RHEL, Arch user
@obtuse dawn I was supposed to install Arch on my Toshiba laptop, but after the install, it won't boot at all via UEFI install. The UEFI firmware setup doesn't have a feature to manage EFI bootloaders.
But I'm okay with Fedora. The only I need is to install some basic stuff. Quod Libet looks nice as an alternative to Rhythmbox.
Arch is tricky, but hella fun to customize
I have an old laptop I threw arch onto, and yeah, it's fun to customize
once i get an RPI 4, im gonna try and throw arch on my RPI 3
Wait u can add Arch to rpi?
Yeah it exists
There is Fedora ARM too
For music I like Audacious!
That's basically why I don't use it and probably never will for a serious system
I love Arch, but it's too fickle for a main OS
well im trying to make like a desktop assistant thing with my rpi, would arch interfere with that or help me?
Ok fair, I think it's too fickle for a main OS
Windows is even worse, I'd rather have Arch lol
Windows Update is one of the shittiest things I have ever seen in an OS
tbh my favorite version of windows other than 7 is 8.1 phone version
it was so good
My favorite Windows is actually 9x
like honestly i dont think theres a phone OS thats as good as win 8.1
it was just so easy to get to everything
I'm waiting for the Pinephone to ship so I can run a real GNU/Linux on phone
Android don't count
like with my current android phone, i physically cannot turn of mobile data from the drop down
i have to go through FOUR menus to turn it off
That sounds like a "your phone" issue - I can do that just fine on Android and have been able to for years
i mean i physically cant set it to be a button on the drop down
you cant customize it like that
but win 8.1 could
Yeah but it's there for me
yeah but the difference is: with win 8.1 you could just add it on there
I can add and remove mine, too
also the fact that there werent app pages, it was just a single scrolling page
oh i cant add or remove on mine
what android version?
10
ah im on 7
Granted this feature is newish, but I could still disable mobile data on 7 from dropdown
So idk what is up with yours
yeah i dont have that on mine
i can do everything but that
including hotspot
but anyway win 8.1 had scrolling home page and then a right arrow to go to app list and search
the only problem was the apps on the app store were trash because apparently no one could make apps with the FREE DEV KIT
and yet i found the greatest homerun derby game made in unity and it was entirely in japanese
I usually got me here from the ThinkPad SubReddit Discord, but does anyone owning Lenovo/IBM ThinkPads?
I have owned ThinkPads before, why?
Inb4 Yamato "5700 XT is an underpowered underperforming card"
also the drivers aren't as good as nvidia
Definitely not true on Linux in my experience
Nvidia used to have the driver advantage here, for sure
But that was a few years ago
I would say AMD GPUs are just a no-go -- perhaps only if you cannot afford for Intel and NVIDIA.
There seems to be this misconception that AMD is for poor folks ๐ค
AMD is just cheaper, that doesnt mean its worse, especially if you compare them
I would never touch an Intel CPU in 2019, they're overpriced and the performance is no better
twin ATI cards made in 2010 beating brand new 980s sure makes AMD look good
Warframe devs acknowledging Wine? Nice.
yeah but a 980 is outdated
Yeah but so are the ATI cards from 2010
is multi gpu support wide spread enough to warrant considering it in 2019?
You generally get some kind of performance boost even now, it depends on what your uses are of course. There are people I've talked to who are experienced and say different things about it
i'd rather get the best single card you can budget for rather than 2 cards and pray it works out
Nvidia makes good products, but they're not infallible. The RTX line is definitely not better for my uses
rn I'd still take an nvidia card over an AMD card but I'd take a R9 over an i9 CPU any day
not that I'd upgrade any time soon
A must-have Linux dock.
Agree that Plank's the best one
Yup, it's a must-have dock for MATE users.
Most of the other docks kinda seemingly died out, anyway
or the settings UIs look like they came from the 90s
Docky was used to be the best dock for Linux before Plank was developed.
Well, Plank is a fork of Docky
Still looking for Twitter client for Linux, but it seems they are dying out due to API changes.
yeah don't they limit the number of people per API license or some shit
I'm kinda-sorta using Discord webhooks as my Twitter client, in conjunction with IFTTT
Just installed CoreBird, and oddly it still works.
also about the multi-GPU thing, its a bad idea to go for it, less and less games are utilizing it
My GPU doesn't support SLI though.
then nothing changes
My board doesn't support multiple GPUs, it's ITX. Unless I use an M.2 PCIe breakout
err my vertical mount blocks the other PCI-E slot
also I'm too cheap to want to buy a 2nd graphics card
but mostly the latter
Yah, I've used it before
You might noticed it replicated from CPU-Z's UI
As far as linux docks: latte ain't bad, plank's decent. I used to run the hell outta cairo dock, but that's not been worked on in an age.

is it possible to bind the win+shit+s shortcut to a mouse button
@mental coyote you remember AWN?
Damn. Haven't heard of AWN in forever.
Right? I remember when AWN was the shit
@subtle hawk rate cables
7/10
Yeah, that's about what I figured
@gloomy tinsel
@gloomy tinsel Is it just me or
Did you not put in the RAM correctly
Unless your mobo only supports two
it looks like its only 2
It is ITX, it only supports 2
i have an ITX that does 4
Those are rare tho, and usually use SO-DIMMs
is that itx tower
Ye it is
My PSU wattage might be a bit small, but it's a good quality unit. Also, Anandtech tested the RX 5700 XT with an overclocked 9900K, and that system didn't draw anywhere close to 450W from the wall, so I feel justified in keeping my PSU
My PC doesn't even have any rgb
keyboard is the only thing i have
It's not RGB in my case, it's just red LEDs. I'm not actually using any of the RGB functionality, and I don't even have a window in my case lol
It's a PC that happens to have RGB functionality, not an RGB PC
well yeah but RGB functionality is RGB
Sure, I guess lol
if it could ONLY be red then its not RGB
But yeah it's more of a "this happens to have RGB in it"
If I had the choice, I would have gotten all bland parts
@flint bobcat your case has RGB on the front
@tame topaz rate my cables
Better than mine for sure
That's my case
The PCIe can definitely be better, but I need extensions for that
i should post my cursed cables
@severe falcon what specs have you again
But yeah the LED strip at the front of Aria's case can change color
Just need software
mine is presets
its 7 fans shoved into a micro-ATX split case
plus the CPU fan
CPU: FX-6300 @ 3.79 GHz
GPU: PNY GTX 950
PSU: 750 W
RAM: 16 12 GB DDR3 @ like 1800 idk
@gloomy tinsel ^
yep shes been running for 6 years straight
Heres the comp itself, ill get the monitor setup next
@flint bobcat left is Lenovo 171p, right is a Dell UltraSharp 1708 I think
well i guess i dont have a pic of it
i have a pic of the old setup tho
basically keep the left monitor, and replace the rest with a large TV with a terrible resolution and color quality
@severe falcon is that a Fractal Design case
yeah the Node 804
Nice, I have the Define Nano S
i like it, but i like my old comp better
@severe falcon I see that you don't have panels/taskbars on all monitors, good for you :3
Oh lol
In win10, right click taskbar > settings > multiple displays
You can choose whether the taskbar appears on all displays or just one
I always hide the taskbar
im on win7
Gross, move off that old boi lol
win7
Either upgrade to 10 or move to some other OS
ehhh, ill wait till i get new comp
๐
Come to the Linux side :3
but games bruh
Games are way better than they used to be, so it might still be possible ;3
ProtonDB
risk of rain 2 is currently windows only
huh, it doesnt list linux on steam
Yeah, you have to enable the option that forces non-native games to load in Proton
Not all are whitelisted by Valve, but a lot work
right now planet coaster is the only thing that won't run on Linux for me
but I also dual boot to windows for nox
is protondb only for steam games?
yeah
rip BL3
because it lists steam's proton compatibility
anything else you need to look in wine's appdb
outside of games, I also have programs that still crashes under wine
I just use Ubuntu MATE on desktop. Fedora MATE on laptop
I would recommend Ubuntu but you're going to play games there
Fedora is a pretty solid gamer distro in my experience, due to all the recent libraries
I'm currently using manjaro which is basically pre-packaged arch
oh crap i wonder if blender has a linux version
It does
it does lol
Has had one for a long time
There are usually tons of compilers in the repositories of distros
If you choose Fedora, make sure to add RPM Fusion for nice stuff like Discord and Steam
fedora vs ubuntu
Ubuntu for wider compatibility and similarity to Debian, Fedora for cutting edgeness and development work
Imo
Of course Yamato has an opinion in this
oh no it's him
i mean i assume the only thing imma hear from yamato is "everything but arch is shit, but be a real man and make your own"
Debian ain't bad, but I wouldn't choose Debian for a gaming distro
you won't find recent stuff in its package manager
It is ooooold
Fedora is like the anti-Debian, kind of
New, cutting edge, exciting! And sometimes, just once in a while, stuff breaks
Fedora is for power users, developers who need the latest software stacks, early adopters
Arch is also like that
debian has a lot of recent packages
guys i use python, youtube, blender, unreal engine, and play my games on a 6 year old comp, i dont need the cutting edge
lol
Boontoo
Ubuntu
but yama is debian good for playing my steam games?
ye
arma 3 is on protondb
there's steam version of it
Proton made Linux gaming so much better
wait so if theres a steam version then why would i need proton?
There isn't a Linux version, I checked. But it is gold in ProtonDB
basically proton provides windows environment to run games that are windows-only
You can always try Debian and see how it does for you. Last time I used Debian, the Nvidia drivers caught fire horribly, but that was 2 years ago
I use Radeon these days anyway
yeah ill try debian
wait
i wonder if my RPI and comp can communicate with each other if both are on debian
cuz then i might actually be able to make my holographic desktop assistant
They can talk even if they run different OS
yeah but i mean talk easier
I mean your windows can even communicate with it
like i wanna tell my RPI to open my browser with a link on my desktop
well i mean i want it to be like siri or cortana but like a physical thing and way better
I never tried doing something like that
Manjaro is actually decent. It took Mint to make Ubuntu such.
dude noctua coolers have a 6 year warranty wtf
like what could even go wrong with a cooler
i'm just one of those boring people who don't care about looks and instead go for performance
and the nh-d15 is like, just 12 euros more expensive than the dark rock 4 so i just went for it

We're reviewing the YESTON RX 580 (2048SP) CUTE PET today, a China-only launch made available thanks to the interwebs. Code SAVEWANGWANG for 10% off GN store...
A kitty GPU? Oh my.
Noctua are crazy good though, and as for what could go wrong with the coolers, heatpipes could snap, mounting screws might be faulty, fans can fail... Plenty can go wrong.
@subtle hawk
idk if you can fix this or if its the wiki's problem but its annoying
can we like modify the api
ill write the dang search correction myself
i mean i wrote a better search correction algorithm in information retreival class
it used both soundex and edit distance
which this thing doesnt even force case to search
its not tho
at least not how i learned it
its just a general phonectic ruleset and you match based on it
OH YOU MEANT SPEAKING LANGUAGE
also in this specific case, i assume you would be searching for something you knew how to say
thats why you do more than just soundex
soundex is when you know what it sounds like, but not how its spelled
like if you spell leonard as lynyrd
both have the exact same soundex
L563
yeah edit distance def
and then i wanna say theres also another thing i learned
where like you mark the beginning and end with $ and then you shift all the letters around to match it
maybe that was for wildcard searching
like
shift$
hift$s
ift$sh
ft$shi
t$shif
there was something with that but i cant remember
also soundex just doesnt work because they usually see the word, not hear it
its only if you attempt to phonetically spell it and it isnt spelled that way
Search correction is also easy to implement in Nimi herself
Just Title Case all words, except for words like "the" and "or" and "of"
Like seriously
cuz then nimi would need an updated list of all the possible wiki pages you can search for
Nah, a good heuristic in this case suffices
Title Casing words except for short words would catch things like "prince of wales" and "duke of york"
well then how is she supposed to correct with edit distance?
Edit distance is less of an issue
You can also use Levenshtein algorithms
levenshtein IS edit distance
No wiki pages found.
/wiki admiral hipper
No wiki pages found.
it doesnt tho
It totally does, tho
then explain
I've programmed with it
explain the two searches i just did
I can't. Because IDK how Nimi is written
well i assume she just uses the text in the api to search
but I assure you that this can work
and i assume "admiral hipper" gets no hits with the API
this is yamato we are talking about
yeah but i assume if its just basically copy pasting text and it works, then it would work
The search API produces the same results as the special search. And special search does work for "hipper" https://azurlane.koumakan.jp/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&search=hipper
then i dont understand how theres a problem
Does the API still suck? Yeah, it does. But Yamato could have definitely tested more thoroughly to avoid issues like this
but thats the thing
if what you say is true about the API, then literally zero testing was needed
Again, IDK how he wrote the bot, what API hooks it's calling, how it was tested, or what it was tested against
oi
text = input()
api.search(text)
im on your side yamato
hes saying the API just does the search
who needs a bot when you have intern to search for you
@severe falcon I said there's a search API endpoint. I didn't say the whole API just does the search
What I'm saying is, you can compare your results to the search API's results, and then from the search API you can get an exact match for a page
yeah but the bot already just vomits a list of the pages
Then IDK what is happening
Something, somewhere is being naughty :3
nimi is being naughty
@gloomy tinsel @severe falcon both of ya
shut it
I use the same API that powers the search bar in the wiki itself
this thing
and that is powered by the OpenSearch API
which works way better than the Search API
ok, so have you figured out why it cant find hipper's pages?
simple
the same reason why the wiki can't
it's not implemented to do advanced search
that's the other search API
so not the search in the upper right corner?
i have figured out the solution:
azurlane.koumakan.jp/w/index.php?search=[insert search text here]&title=Special%3ASearch&go=Go
but it works better than the wiki's search api
i use another wiki for web scraping
idk, i just started it, but looks good so far
whos vamp
especially annoying ones that hit the server very often
the wiki host
and I'm with her on that one
im not using koumakan wiki
scraping is rude
its ok yamato, im not using their site
are they fine with daily requesting the csv of the tables though?
depends
you pick like 1 or 2 ships you want, and it builds a meta around them
ooo
cuz we have tier lists, but they dont go over composition tier lists
cuz you can pick 6 T0 ships and then Nakaga just dabs on you
whats the new one
what
Probably means Amagi Hiryuu Nagato
Tested stability on upgraded system by running some stress tests, sometimes at the same time. System seems good
4K Linux test
get yourself a 4k night sky background
Unicorn peeking...
rich boi
love the unicorn bg
also is that gnome? been a while since I played with linux
looks like arch with gnome
@subtle hawk is it fine if I just scrape everyone's quotes just once
i think a one time scrape is fine
which means continuous 300+ http requests
i think yamato and wiki host are more against the every minute kind of scrapes
ah, that kind of thing
uhhh im fairly certain you can ask #wiki-feedback and see if they just have a table of all that
or some way to download all of them without scraping
@signal trellis I'm using MATE desktop environment on Fedora Linux. The dock that I used is Plank.
also against shit that does 300 400 requests a second
nah, my connection is too slow for that rate
like if ur gonna do it atleast have the decency of not hitting everything at once
why would you even need something that scrapes that much on our wiki
i would think a daily scrape would just be mostly the same info
yeah, stats can be cached
like zero changes
but yeah @subtle hawk def go ask the wiki team if theres a way to just download all the lines
its easier than a scraper
the only thing i hate about the mediawiki stuff is that there is not a "select * from table" thing
so you have to manually enter every single column name
@subtle hawk time to scrape
i used beautiful soup with python
no they're not
Which is more efficient? A pulsating flesh animated by shaders or manual animation?
you mean like animated normal map vs mesh animation?
well how else will the shader show it?
shaders allows you to mess with vertices, colour, opacity, wetness, etc and etc
it's way beyond normal map

like move the vertices?
cuz im pretty sure a normal animation is more efficient than having the shader do it
huh
it depends on what kind of efficiency you're looking for
if it's storage space you're trying to be efficient about, then shader animations are better, at the cost of greater processing power required to give you the result, because now your game/bake has to go to the shader and figure out how the animation works
if you're trying to spare processing power however, manual animations are better as the data is already there and once the file with the keyframes is loaded, it can just be executed with no further instructions needed, nothing to figure out, the downside to this however is that all those keyframes have to be stored somewhere, so it ends up taking more storage space
there is no "better" way of doing things, each approach has its own upsides and downsides, it really comes down to what you want to animate
like for example, if the object you want to animate is an object that will always be in the game world, and it won't be destroyed by the player or it shouldn't be affected by the actions of the player like for example, a flag that's really high up, if the player doesn't have a long range weapon to affect the flag (or you simply don't care about the flag reacting to the player's actions) you can just animate it yourself, or you pre-bake a cloth animation with a physics engine
a good example of this is pretty much every banner or flag in skyrim
you can also use pre-baked or manual animations for objects that will get destroyed, or specific scenes where the destruction has to be properly animated and you don't want any clipping to happen, a good example of this is GTA V's scene of the manor crashing down
you might want to use physics engines or shaders if you want dynamic destruction that you really can't be bothered animating by hand, like for example, shooting at a wall and rubble falling and bouncing on the ground
Remind me what hardware @subtle hawk
That's vague
I told you what mine are, I think
IDC if "AMD gang" means a Phenom II and Radeon HD 5750
IDC if "AMD gang" means a Phenom II and Radeon HD 5750
AMD Sempron 3200+
512 MB RAM
ATI Radeon X800 GTO
Yes ๐
mine is a gtx 1660
even tho there are much newer gpus out there, this one works above 60fps
GTX 950, made by PNY
i bought a gtx 1050 off of ebay for $50
found out it was a GTS 950 and shit died after a week

mine is somehow alive
somehow
I mean, graphics cards usually last a fair while
and the GTX 950 is not that old a model
Sure, but that doesn't have much to do with the longevity of the hardware
yeah but i def overpaid and am salty
CPU: fx-6300
RAM: 12 GB ddr3
PSU: 750 W
and shes been happily switching her bits for like 7 years now
IMO, it's not as bad a CPU as people often said it was
people said it was a bad cpu?
A lot of people did lol
what lot of people? cuz literally ALL of my friends had it
I personally think it was good value for a number of use cases
and thats different professions literally across the globe
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
Most people I've spoken to held it in low regard
I personally thought it an underrated part
yeah i havent found anything that could max it
except poorly optimized programs that i made
When that time comes, thinking of upgrading to Ryzen?
less upgrade and more entire new build
ill keep a hard drive, maybe 2
PSU you can most likely keep
nah im gonna get a new one
unless it's a bad PSU
this one is also like 6 years old and it was close to maxed for a while
๐ค
like 699/750 W
I see
i had twin ATIs before the 950 and they were hungry for electrcity
For my PSU, I don't think I'll need to replace it soon. This graphics card should keep me happy for years, and if the CPU gets upgraded, it'll be to Zen 2 or newer, and the wattage probably won't increase
CPU upgrade would most likely be to 3700X or its equivalent
Maybe 3900 or equivalent
The 65W 12-core
yeah im just gonna get all new things cuz id rather have a system thats ready to go for 10 years rather than 4
gonna go for 2700X
I built my system with the "slowly upgrade it over time" mentality
yeah same, but ive hit the max with my current one
like theres not an original part on my comp except the OS hard drive
Mm
This PC I currently have is technically the upgrade of an old Dell prebuilt, if you can believe it
I say "technically" because only the SSD and GPU got carried over to this system, and now the GPU's been replaced too
mine is the literal ship of theseus of computers
I think the only old part in my pc is a laptop's ssd
the original that we bought off ebay had a phenom, one ATi card, a 450 W psu, a different case, mobo, ram, etc
This system is the replacement for a Q8300 lol
Core 2 Quads are still surprisingly decent
There's a counterpart system to this - a Ryzen 7 1700 server
I definitely had fun with that server build
even if it is ghetto af
nice
R7 1700
24 GB RAM
16 GB SSD boot drive + some hard drive, I forgot
GT 710, which I had on hand already
A craptastic case I had lying around
24gb
24 is a weird number
3 8gb sticks?
Yah, 3x8
or 4 x 6 gb
I don't even know if it's running in mixed dual channel or not. It's a big ??? whether the Gigabyte board actually supports that feature
Fortunately, memory speed is not an issue for this system
so why not get a 4th 8gb stick?
I used to run 3 stick
Money lol
but it's way back in few years ago
I'm a lazy asshole and I don't feel the need to fill the last slot
not with the current demands at least
I don't even use all up right now
The OS on the server is also ghetto. I chose Xubuntu 18.04 instead of some server Linux because I'm lazy, and I might run Steam on it at some point to host game servers
but it's only part I wanted to upgrade because I somehow went with 2666MHz stick
and I have no one in my home who uses ddr4 sticks
You can tell the server is ghetto partly because the screws don't match
i would kill you for mismatched screws and not bat an eye at mismatched anything else
hahaha
(don't look at the back of this server, the thumbscrews holding the panels in don't even match)
is the back easily viewable?
Nah
But like
The right panel is held in with thumbscrews that have black plastic grips, and the left panel is held in with black-painted ones
then i care slightly less
because i know they are different even if i cant see them
Speaking of screw choices, I also chose to use normal screws to hold in my GPU instead of the thumbscrews that came with the case.
It basically boiled down to "GPU too fat, not enough space to easily install thumbscrews"
@subtle hawk are there any alternatives to javascript for web stuff? Im still gonna be using html and css tho
or anyone can answer really
@severe falcon you don't
Oof
but a compiler that targets js/webasm exists
Yeah talking with some others, ive decided ill just stick with javascript
If you hate JS that much, you can use languages that compile to JS. There is a Python-JS compiler
its less hating javascript and more i watched a man die on the inside trying to query a database with javascript
i mean we were learning as we were doing it
and the whole "not waiting for a function to return before running the next line" caused a kerfuffle
uhh yeah it was for a website
like
u have to be absolutely r-word-since-the-skrubs-will-clap-me-if-I-say-it-again to do that
yeah thats what happens when you tell students to do a project
the database is queried serverside
and they have never done anything like it before
i mean it was on the website that was hosted on the same cloud as the database
we just used the javascript to get the results
this ain't PHP
like wtf man
you run a web server that will handle requests and the database queries
the clientside JS should only know to send requests to the web server and do something with the returned data
the web server can be in anything u want
python, JS, C#, Java, go, PHP, C++
you name it
so u couldn't figure out how to make a simple HTTP request?
it was getting it to display
because it would display the info before the info was returned from the function
so it was blank
literally
fetch('https://api.example.com/user/favourites').then(r => r.json()).then(res => { /* do smth with the result */ })
oh so you put .then() if you want it to wait
see we had a website to build with literally 0 classes between any of us on how to build a website
so w3schools taught us everything
and by everything i mean the basics and nothing that we actually needed to know to get it to work
.then is one way
there's also callbacks
and async/await
and generators
but nobody uses those
everyone is using then or async/await now
what should i learn first in python ?
hello world
But that is bad practice
#!/usr/bin/env python3
def main():
"""Print "Hello World!""""
print("Hello World!")
if __name__ == "__main__":
main()```
This is better practice
Adding a docstring to the module would be even better practice
yes I know about that but I only do it on serious codes or modules
most of my quick scripts are not documented and doesn't have __name__ check
To get into the habit of doing proper practice, duh
?
Proper practice of doing __name__ checks and docstrings
Imo it is best to start early
When learning
__name__ checks are for when you wanted to import this file as a module to prevent accidentally executing it on import
huh
you and your weird python habits
also @gloomy tinsel this ain't bash
no need to specify the runtime at the top
I do it anyway for my own stuff
that ain't a good practice
So I can call the script directly
exactly for that reason it's not good practice
It is actually normal practice
it's not
๐ค
execution flag should be explicit not implicit
I see it a lot in Linux packages
because they're packages
a way someone thinks u should install and configure smth
doesn't mean it's the right way
๐ค ๐ค ๐ค
I always run it as python filename.py
same
Well, TIL I guess
man i love how they are trying to get all smart about windows 10 updates by making them do in the background without telling you but you still notice it because your disk usage skyrockets up to 100% for the entire duration
if you fail to be low-key about it because you still end up gimping performance, why hide it at all?
the issue is not that it needs to update, but the fact that it does it without even telling you and ends up gimping performance
Is the october update out today?
