severe falcon
#

pretty sure they fixed it though cuz that company has existed for like 60 years and shows no signs of dying ever

subtle hawk
#

I have a relatively small database of 30 millions rows of data

flint bobcat
#

small makinamiheh

subtle hawk
#

and without optimization a simple select with a limit of 20 and a few where clauses takes about 10-30 seconds to complete

flint bobcat
#

oh yeah yamato, what is a good reason to have a home db?

severe falcon
#

started in 1928 with a 25 x 100 ft store
now has 177 stores and 14k employees and the HQ is here

subtle hawk
#

with optimizations it takes 0.3 to 0.8 seconds

flint bobcat
#

like i thought a home db is only for storing pirated movies

subtle hawk
#

that's not a db u dumdum

#

that's a NAS

flint bobcat
subtle hawk
#

Network Attached Storage

severe falcon
#

database is for storing DATA

flint bobcat
#

hmm

severe falcon
#

i kinda want one of the sirens to say data like that and then just sirenTentacles

subtle hawk
severe falcon
#

name her yamato

flint bobcat
#

so whats the use of a home db not a NAS

subtle hawk
#

I am the siren leader

#

none

#

a db is something very purpose made

flint bobcat
#

im guessing for you its nimi

subtle hawk
#

ye

#

doe mind u I have a miniature data center at home

#

SPEAKING OF

#

today is maintenance day

severe falcon
#

is nimi sql?

subtle hawk
#

some of it

#

not always

#

dependens on what's active

severe falcon
#

i had a project and we did nosql and i dont really know which one i like better

subtle hawk
#

they both have their uses

flint bobcat
#

would i be able to connect to yamato's DB makinamiheh

subtle hawk
#

no lel

severe falcon
#

bruh nimi probably has some defense system designed to kill your hard drives

subtle hawk
#
  1. you don't have credentials
  2. you don't know the IP and port
  3. the db is only accessible in that specific VLAN
flint bobcat
#

oh so you can only access it locally?

subtle hawk
#

ye

flint bobcat
severe falcon
#

@subtle hawk so what makes a db a db? like if i made a specialized list of several different values in java or something, would that be a db?

subtle hawk
#

Google can answer that question

severe falcon
#

oof

#

i mean my db CLASS didnt lol

#

anyway @flint bobcat how is VN coming along?

flint bobcat
#

well so far so good

#

i need to rewrite the whole code because i dont know how to efficiently change scenes

severe falcon
#

whats wrong with it now?

flint bobcat
#

well it needs to have cleaner code

#

and i store the actual text from the scenes in a array

#

its crap

severe falcon
#

oof need any help?

flint bobcat
#

sure in maybe 2 days, cause really busy with college hw

severe falcon
#

same, i have 2 data mining classes and they are teaching the same stuff but differently so im dying and confused

flint bobcat
#

i feel like CS professors suck at teaching makinamiheh

severe falcon
#

mine are good except one is teaching how to code python to do math for you, the other is teaching the actual math behind the statistics and expects you to figure out how to code it in matlab

flint bobcat
#

leaning how a programming language does math for you should be self taught

#

thats what i would think

severe falcon
#

yeah but this is my first time using python, and programming in python is VASTLY different than in java or c++

#

i did the first project how i usually program and it was like 30-35 lines, the python way of doing it, only importing like one thing, had like 10 lines

flint bobcat
#

using other languages other than c/c++ for math triggers me

#

especially python

#

there is no such thing as data types

severe falcon
#

well python is running c, so its basically the same math

#

what

#

oh boy there are definitely datatypes

flint bobcat
#

well

#

you can't write shit like string foo = ...

#

or uint_32

severe falcon
#

well yeah but once you use numpy for arrays and stuff, you cant even do stuff with the SAME datatypes

#

rn i dont have the most up to date version of numpy, so trying to add another row to an array is the hardest thing to figure out

flint bobcat
#

also i got sad when i learned that java doesnt have pointers

severe falcon
#

well actually its more like java ALWAYS has pointers and you have no way of controlling them

#

cant remember the exact scenario, but a teacher showed us how java uses pointers

flint bobcat
#

just looked it up, references

#

i see what you mean when you say you cant control them

severe falcon
#

yeah but i cant remember the example that he used to demonstrate

flint bobcat
#

literally my professor on the first day

#

"A lot of you don't know programming"

#

that's where you're wrong kiddo

severe falcon
#

oh well thats actually true for my 4000 level python class, since comp sci is actually in our college of business instead of engineering

flint bobcat
severe falcon
#

but i got a business scholarship thing from a rich dude so im not complaining about it

flint bobcat
#

all i got was a government grant that cleared my tuition

severe falcon
#

also is it that algorithms professors are bad or that teaching algorithms is just impossible to make fun

#

i can tell you right now that scholarship did not clear tuition, taco bell is my only friend

subtle hawk
subtle hawk
#

you have 256gb sd card? 👀

#

that thing is like $60

tame topaz
#

Get a 512 entyLUL

subtle hawk
#

yeah, there's 512gb

#

but I think you have to order that one

#

stores here still sell 256gb maximum

#

Bangladesh has limited supplies

#

also I saw 400gb on some stores but not 512

#

Only Integral And Samsung produces 512GB SD cards

#

At least that's what I know

stone wave
subtle hawk
#

Still on SE 9.5?

stone wave
#

9.0 actually

#

take it that's out of date

#

some how that's the most up to date version for my phone
it's an unlocked S9+ so I thought it would get android 9 before the carrier versions but i havent gotten any OTA for it yet /shrug

subtle hawk
#

You'll get it Feb/March

subtle hawk
#

I don't see the point for such big storage options on phones

stone wave
#

unless i throw my entire .flac library on my phone, a tv series or go on a long vacation and store videos locally 64gb is enough for me personally

subtle hawk
#

Jesus Christ

#

everything is cloud stored for me

#

or on my personal servers

#

so I only keep pics lewds and books on my phone

#

thinking of ditching the 64 GB SD card altogether

stone wave
#

Yeah, pictures and video get dumped on the cloud for me as well. All I keep is a few playlists on my phone when in comes to media which tops out at a few gigs.

Books go on my Kindle Paperwhite which has an appallingly low amount of storage but I only store unread books on it so it's fine.

tame topaz
mental coyote
#

I gotta disagree, Yamato. Local storage at least doesn't depend on some server farm having its shit together + an active internet connection. Encrypt yer drives, and you at least know yer data's always accessible.

subtle hawk
#

@mental coyote that's just tinfoil hat

#

and most ppl have internet these days

mental coyote
#

How's it tinfoil hat, when you don't need internet to use your own personal (local) storage?

#

The biggest advantage on the cloud side is that yer not fucked if yer house burns down, sure. But, having direct access to yer stuff from a physical location always works, unless that drive/sd card is corrupted or destroyed.

subtle hawk
#

access what? music? videos? why should I keep them locally when I can stream them

mental coyote
#

Just as an example: I have ~200Gb of files I backup. Music, configs, etc. That's far easier and faster to port over from a detachable drive.

#

Of course, you have yer own server, so for you, streaming prolly does work out.

subtle hawk
#

Also streaming Over 200 GB files daily is not exactly affordable for some

#

Not all places are like US v

severe falcon
#

i dont think my internet could stream 200 GB in 24 hours

#

Well actually i just did the math and it could do like 396 if it stayed at a constant rate of the max ive ever seen it on steam

subtle hawk
#

I have over 400 GB of videos
Anime series
So if I watch all the anime series saved on my drive twice It'll be over 800 GB
Not exactly comfy

severe falcon
#

I mean i have 800 GB + 0.3 TB of just games on two of my drives

subtle hawk
#

Basically 1.1 TB

severe falcon
#

Also back when i had an external HDD for some dumb reason they made it have a sleep timer that could not be adjusted, so it kept falling asleep after 5 mins while i was playing a game dependent on the files in said hard drive

#

It took a solid 3 mins between the time i picked up an audio log in borderlands 2 to when it actually started playing the audio

#

RTT: 3 mins

subtle hawk
#

That rhymes lol

severe falcon
#

i have resorted to beating my wifi adapter because its now apparently damaged from the heat it generated when it got too hot that one time

#

also i love it when usb devices dont carry their own drivers for install and also dont share any drivers with devices for the same purpose and made by the same company

subtle hawk
#

just use linux, 99% of hardware works without installing add'l packages

mental coyote
#

That 1%, is an evil bastard

subtle hawk
#

Yesterday Microsoft surprised us by releasing a Windows 10 20H1 build,  which according to Microsoft’s changelog contained only a few minor fixes. One unheralded change was however noticed by Windows Subsystem for  Linux users, who noticed that it was now a lot easier to ...

flint bobcat
#

sounds nice laffeyDrink

#

really helpful

mental coyote
#

WSL is one of MS's better ideas, to be frank.

subtle hawk
#

A community edition of Windows 10 mixed with a Linux Distro (Debian or Arch or whatever) fully community managed and free

A dream worth being famous in a min

#

Because MSFT can't do UI nicely
They can't create a separate SKU for normal people
They can't fix anything on time or ever
They waste time on the most useless of things
And 420 other problems

subtle hawk
#

I mean as much as I agree with that

#

not like open source doesn't take a while to fix things sometimes

#

Will still do a better job than MSFT

dusty thorn
mental coyote
#

Hell, wouldn't Manjaro have been the only hard part? (unless no bootcamp)

dusty thorn
#

More like time consuming than hard

#

Bootcamp makes unnecessary problems if you try it tho

mental coyote
#

Damn. Woulda thought you could use it for osx/w10, then splice linux.

dusty thorn
#

Yeah that‘s what I also tried at first

#

But the limitations are as follows:

  1. you can use bootcamp only on a disk with a single apfs/mac partition
  2. if you already made a bootcamp partition for windows and try to create another one for your linux distro then you won‘t be able to boot into windows anymore
mental coyote
#

Yep. Guess it's GRUB time, then

dusty thorn
#

You don‘t need grub LeanderXD

#

Which mac do you have?

mental coyote
#

I don't. But curiosity.

dusty thorn
#

ah I see

#

I'm booting linux per efi

#

only win 10 boots in legacy mode cause audio doesn't work in efi mode on my model

mental coyote
#

That's an odd quirk.

dusty thorn
subtle hawk
#

where's the top row

#

oh yeah figured

#

because you rarely type numbers and symbols

#

still though my language had to use number row or else it couldn't fit all 44 consonants and 28 vowels/tone marks

#

👀

#

You Thai?

#

yeah

#

lol

#

also not shown: ฅ and ฃ which maps to | and \ respectively

#

although those are two unused characters in modern Thai

#

those extra macro keys cirGasm

#

Ya I have 22 macros

#

4 preconfigured RGB patterns

#

And a normal full size keyboard

#

All in one

#

It has SteelSeries so it's kinda helpful

#

I still love how my new keyboard would cost $30 more for rgb

#

I don't understand why people wanted colorful setup on every parts of their pcs

#

I just wanted a complete set lol

severe falcon
#

LOOK AT THE ABSOLUTE SIZE OF THAT SPACEBAR LAD

subtle hawk
#

It's called a smash bar

flint bobcat
#

@subtle hawk what mouse is that

subtle hawk
#

HP OMEN Mouse with SteelSeries

flint bobcat
subtle hawk
#

@flint bobcat Nope

#

Wait

flint bobcat
subtle hawk
flint bobcat
#

its not on sale though

subtle hawk
#

Kinda Asia only thing now I guess

flint bobcat
#

oh

subtle hawk
#

I bought it just because it feels natural to hold

subtle hawk
#

I prefer shape more than a billion buttons lol

#

Would've gone full Logitech if my PC was a custom one

severe falcon
#

I have a cooler master mouse, its a massive boi

subtle hawk
#

Up or down?

severe falcon
#

?

maiden plume
#

Didn't knnow there was a club like this lol. Hmm let me contribute to the mouse topic.
As for me the only mice I have would be a Corsair m95 and a Razer mamba 2012. Pref the Corsair one for everyday use because I like its weight (yes I like it heavy) but for high movement and easy of use (the macros are easy to set and i have more on the razer one) I pref the mamba 2012 (still alive in 2019 LeanderXD )

tame topaz
#

I'm using an Asus Cerberus mouse that I got for free like last year

subtle hawk
#

ok weird. I tried to put 4 8GB DDR3 RAMs into my MB and my computer keeps on restarting

#

then when i took out 1 it boots normally but it shows i only have 16GB RAM

#

actually 15.9GB

tame topaz
#

Hmm

maiden plume
#

is that win 10? if its below like win 7 you need a higher version of windows 7 for more than 16.

#

Or check to see if the ram is seated properly. Try to insert the ram into other slots to check if the slot is dead. Or if your MoBo has a code check the book

tame topaz
#

how big is it though fumizukiStare

#

The battery I mean

#

Hm.

subtle hawk
#

no shit sherlock

#

There's external drive cases with outside power tho

subtle hawk
#

or an external SSD would drain less

#

@subtle hawk probably one of the two new DIMMs is bad, and your computer doesn't support a 3 DIMM configuration

#

usually they support 1, 2, and 4 DIMMS

#

Well I forced the 4th RAM to hard it broke the latch

#

that ain't good

subtle hawk
#

@subtle hawk now that's a big mistake right there

#

it can support up to how many channels or slots it has

subtle hawk
#

I've seen mobos that take only pairs after the first set is filled

subtle hawk
subtle hawk
#

@subtle hawk what proto board is that

#

basys 3

subtle hawk
tame topaz
#

big oof

#

Also yeah, I ain't feeling Linux.

#

Not my cup of tea.

subtle hawk
#

That constant password asking makes me go mad

tame topaz
#

Thankfully I don't use Skype.

subtle hawk
#

Just powershell nuke it

tame topaz
#

Good lord

subtle hawk
#

lol

#

Or just modify the ISO before install

tame topaz
#

Looks like I'm far, far from being a power user.

subtle hawk
#

Ye'

tame topaz
#

I never cared about my privacy

subtle hawk
#

I basically remove 70% of the Windows crap from the ISO and remove useless drivers when I do a clean reinstall lol

#

PR doesn't matter
Especially in Asia

#

Just disable update service 👀

tame topaz
#

I install every update

subtle hawk
#

@tame topaz You really shouldn't

#

Last update was quality

tame topaz
#

Of course, not the October update

#

At least I knew about that.

subtle hawk
#

1903 will be even better lol

#

I'm already on it

tame topaz
#

/s or no?

subtle hawk
#

/ded

tame topaz
subtle hawk
mental coyote
#

I just run pro, when I bother with W10.

tame topaz
#

Guess I'll just stay a peasant.

#

Too used to it.

subtle hawk
mental coyote
#

Nah. mess with it in a vm. That way, you already know what's up, before ever trying a baremetal install.

tame topaz
#

Idea Factory owo

subtle hawk
#

oof

mental coyote
#

nice Ram

#

only got 16, myself

tame topaz
#

8

subtle hawk
#

Too bad my HDDs crashed few days ago

mental coyote
#

ow.

tame topaz
#

Ouch.

subtle hawk
mental coyote
#

luckily, win install key's in firmware, these days. one of their smarter moves, tbh.

subtle hawk
#

I had a 2x5 TB HDD config

tame topaz
#

Omen eh?

#

Hm.

subtle hawk
#

Ye

mental coyote
#

you say "omen," my brain starts playing Ave Satani in the background.

subtle hawk
#

Changed some stuffed
That's it

#

HP OMEN

#

Based on VoodooPC

tame topaz
#

That's like 1.6 TB of SSD storage, good lord

#

I can't even buy a 120 gig boot drive

subtle hawk
#

My boot drive is M.2

#

Everything else is SATA

tame topaz
#

I wanna snatch a B450 board too for that StoreMI

mental coyote
#

I only need 1Tb atm. Got an m2 slot, as well. Running a sata ssd.

subtle hawk
tame topaz
#

Man, I have a long way to go in the path of computing.

subtle hawk
#

Ye

tame topaz
#

But eh, for now I'm proud of my own budget build.

#

Not so proud now that used 1060s and 580s are selling for as cheap as dirt.

mental coyote
#

You can learn a lot yerself. Hell, I originally started with linux back in '07, after a XP HDD went tits up a day and a half after I bought the damn machine. Certainly didn't feel like putting out loot for another MS install, at that time.

subtle hawk
#

My XP install gave wae just 15 days after buying lul

tame topaz
#

I used XP for at least the first 8 years of my life

#

No joke.

subtle hawk
#

Military man here

#

Noice

tame topaz
#

Only switched to 7 after the machine got fried for whatever reason.

mental coyote
#

Nothin wrong with that. Shit, when I was 8, we were still fucking around with Commodores.

tame topaz
#

Not sure what happened, but I remembered a burning smell.

#

Shit, that was like 2011-2012 and was probably still rocking a P4.

subtle hawk
#

v

tame topaz
#

Then switched over to a new fangled HP prebuilt.

#

Was not into computers back then, so wondered why it wouldn't run the latest games.

#

Integrated graphics.

subtle hawk
#

I still dunno why people hate Intel iGPU so much

mental coyote
#

Anymore, I run with laptops. Snag a new one every 2-3 years, sell the old off, or use it for experiments. (Mainly because I just prefer portability)

tame topaz
#

Yeah, works decently as a backup.

#

Newer iterations can match up to a GT 730.

mental coyote
#

Intel iGPUs have improved a lot.

subtle hawk
#

Upcoming iGPU iterations will hit 1 GHZ

tame topaz
#

Speaking of which, bought one as well as 8 gigs of RAM just last year.

#

Then I discovered the used market and found out I could buy an used 750 for the same price as my new card.

subtle hawk
#

GT cards are crap

tame topaz
#

Yeah, shame I didn't know better back then.

subtle hawk
#

GTX1050 minimum
9th Gen Intel iGPUs come close to a GT1030

#

very close

tame topaz
#

Now rocking a 2200G with 3 gig 1060.

#

Man were prices of the 1060 inflated back then, good lord.

subtle hawk
#

Wai no RX580👀

tame topaz
#

Bought in summer 2018.

subtle hawk
#

All AMD would've been quality

tame topaz
#

Back then AMD cards were pretty much nonexistent here.

#

Glad to see them plentiful now.

subtle hawk
#

My OMEN model had a choice between AMD and Intel
Could've saved a lot of money
Chose not to

tame topaz
#

Well, I figured I gotta go quad core some time

subtle hawk
tame topaz
#

And seeing a barebones B350 board going for sale for dirt cheap for a limited time, I couldn't pass up.

mental coyote
#

Heh. I've been AMD-ist for years. Glad as hell to see 'em able to kick a lot more ass, lately.

tame topaz
#

Sold my old G5400 + B360 board and then bought the new combo for about the same price.

#

Snatched the last board in stock.

subtle hawk
#

Well I started on Intel so not comfy changing platforms v

tame topaz
#

It didn't come back in stock ever since.

#

Lucky.

subtle hawk
mental coyote
#

Hey, I don't hate. Best world's one where both our "teams" do well. Keeps shit good for everyone.

subtle hawk
#

Intel CPU + AMD Graphics = Good for 90% PC users

mental coyote
#

Truth

subtle hawk
#

Combined even better
Like on laptops

mental coyote
#

Went Ryzen 5, this time around. Held out till those hit laptops.

tame topaz
#

Let's see if Zen 3 is as good as the rumors.

mental coyote
#

2500U is not bad.

subtle hawk
#

Must
Wait
For
Zen69

tame topaz
#

oof

#

But yeah, what sucks about laptop Zen from what I've heard is the near lack of driver updates.

#

Hope AMD can fix that this year.

subtle hawk
#

AMD is trying

mental coyote
#

I've had multiple updates since I snagged this thing. And a bios update.

tame topaz
#

Cool.

subtle hawk
#

I got 13 bios updates in 3 months lol

mental coyote
#

That's arguably too many?

subtle hawk
#

Not really

#

Intel is crappy at patches nowadays'

#

Also some are for unlocking features

mental coyote
#

Miss me with that Spectre shit.

subtle hawk
#

Got 5~7 for that longcryland

tame topaz
#

I really like the Spectre logo

#

Too bad they wouldn't put it anywhere else except the high end

subtle hawk
#

It's not that Spectre

tame topaz
#

oof

#

But still

mental coyote
#

I meant the exploit, totally forgot HP had that name on a ultraportable.

subtle hawk
#

True
I have that logo on my monitor

#

I want a OMEN monitor here in Bangladesh

tame topaz
#

AMD is impervious uniFlex

subtle hawk
mental coyote
#

IIRC, Spectre was intel, Meltdown hit both intel and amd chipsets.

subtle hawk
#

And mobile SoC too

tame topaz
#

Remember the whole CTS Labs fiasco?

subtle hawk
#

oh boy

tame topaz
#

A shoddy hitjob.

subtle hawk
#

Like, wai?

tame topaz
#

Ryzenfall didn't really come off as credible.

subtle hawk
#

Companies are really hard to understand sometimes
Harder to understand than girls

tame topaz
#

Yep.

#

Like, GTX 1660?!

#

The fuck did that come from?!

subtle hawk
#

Don't give 2 fucks to rumors

tame topaz
#

I'll believe what I want.

subtle hawk
#

And Nvidia will kill themselves if they keep laying GPU eggs

tame topaz
#

Mhm.

#

Radeon VII's bit of a letdown.

#

Tis a shame.

#

Still love the double meaning of the VII though.

subtle hawk
#

As I said before
Nvidia = Shrinks die to increase efficiency
AMD = Shrinks die to overclock the package to a billion layers of hell and back

#

At least we don't need to worry about warranty entyLUL

tame topaz
#

Yep. Space heater AMD cards were not an exaggeration.

mental coyote
#

Nvidia, like Intel, has been top dog so long they just DGAF half the time.

subtle hawk
#

Especially with that leather jacket

tame topaz
#

Lisa Su did it better

subtle hawk
#

Makes AMD goin like sandyMeme

#

Consumers did it even better

#

With Just Cash

tame topaz
#

Would be interesting to see what the GPU space would be like with Intel joining the game next year

subtle hawk
#

I'm seriously considering creating a custom watercooling block which makes direct contact with the substrate

tame topaz
#

Ooh.

mental coyote
#

Interesting will be ARM getting into the laptop space worth a damn.

subtle hawk
#

Maybe

#

If MSFT and Qualcomm is serious

#

Looking forward to SDM 8CX

mental coyote
#

They damn well got the money to make a run of it.

tame topaz
#

Fun fact: Adreno is an anagram of Radeon

subtle hawk
tame topaz
#

Because simply Adreno used to be made by ATI before being sold to Qualcomm

subtle hawk
#

If Samsung beats Qualcomm in this race of ARM Computing I'll die laughing

#

Because I know Samsung can if they want to

#

Or Apple

#

A12X = i3 or i5
I think

tame topaz
#

Mobile or desktop though?

mental coyote
#

Sammy needs to quit locking their shit down so hard, or their fandom might just shrink.

tame topaz
#

Knox

subtle hawk
#

Betting on either Samsung or Apple

#

Apple SoC are powerful enough to power a small Macbook

mental coyote
#

Hasn't apple actually been losing profit on anything but phones, tho?

subtle hawk
#

We need da battery

#

Apple needs to fix their dick to survive

#

Making better products and setting them at good prices will send them to the sun

tame topaz
#

The Chinese phone brands are probably innovating more than the other brands nowadays.

subtle hawk
#

Still don't trust software

tame topaz
#

Still don't care warShrug

#

Good performance with good price is A-OK for me.

#

Don't need nothing more.

subtle hawk
#

I heard ace combat

#

I was summoned

#

lol

tame topaz
#

@subtle hawk The Mihaly fight in M7 was fun sandyMeme

subtle hawk
tame topaz
#

Still adamant that Amagi is pretty much just Mihaly

subtle hawk
#

lol

#

I'm from the same region as him IRL

tame topaz
#

What server is that

mental coyote
#

Yea, Yamato. Someone created a summoning hexagram outta leftover computer wiring.

subtle hawk
#

trying to summon UNIX gods I see

tame topaz
#

Whaddaya mean same region?

subtle hawk
#

mihaly is from northern romania equivalent of strangereal

#

same as me

tame topaz
#

Still lol at his full name

#

@subtle hawk But yeah what server is that?

#

With an Ace Combat role even

subtle hawk
#

world of warships discord

tame topaz
#

Oh cool

subtle hawk
#

we have a AC club there

#

since the majority of mods and active ppl are giant AC nerds

tame topaz
#

Imma go there just for the AC club sandyMeme

subtle hawk
#

they're also here

tame topaz
#

Cool stuff.

subtle hawk
#

now if you'll excuse me I have a student council meeting

mental coyote
tame topaz

obtuse dawn
#

Well, that was a lot more pain than I was expecting... Trying to get Windows to use UTC so it plays nice with Linux (I'm dual-booting)

mental coyote
#

You use the registry hack?

subtle hawk
#

what does UTC have to do with anything

#

ur dual booting

#

the OSes are independent

subtle hawk
#

windows fucks with the system clock

#

its a very annoying 'feature' when you're dualbooting

obtuse dawn
#

Yeah, did the registry hack

#

Problem is Linux expects the BIOS clock to be in UTC, while Windows directly sets the BIOS clock to local time by default

#

Something something "we wanted to make it easier for people who are directly setting the clock" or I dunno

#

That's apparently some of the logic

subtle hawk
#

ye

obtuse dawn
#

Apparently a very large subset of Windows users were directly setting the system clock in the BIOS

subtle hawk
#

what windows are you running again?

#

I have dual booting as well

#

and they never

#

EVER

#

interfered with each other

#

including the system clock

obtuse dawn
#

Windows 10 and Ubuntu dual-boot. I think Ubuntu may be doing an ntp query and changing the hardware clock, then Windows expects the hardware clock to be local time and displays it as such.

#

When I'd reboot from Linux back to Windows I had the time displayed on the Windows side as the current UTC time.

subtle hawk
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

ye you can fix it on the linux side

#

but there's a few reasons why that isn't recommended

#

mainly to do with logging

#

or you know

#

set everything accordingly

so that they play nice

severe falcon

Why even bother with front camera lmao

I thought there was enough tech available to slap a screen on the ass and just adding a great rear cam

Wait, WHY HAS NO ONE DONE THAT

Oh, it's a HINGE

subtle hawk

Chinese manufacturers did that so warShrug

I mean
Nubia X is a great example

obtuse dawn

I'm fisking this article a bit...

severe falcon

but thats so smart, and you save so much money, and it would work out great cuz now you can advetise your selfie camera being better than anyone elses

subtle hawk

Just look at that beauty

obtuse dawn
#

"Samsung's unpopular decision to put the fingerprint scanner on the back of the device" well maybe if you'd put it in a sane spot instead of offset...

subtle hawk
#

Well they did go full in-display so

obtuse dawn
#

Isn't that the one that slides up a bit to reveal the front camera?

subtle hawk
#

Nope

severe falcon
#

Honestly i was thinking of just a small rectangle of a screen on the back

obtuse dawn

Or is there just no front camera?

It was haptic I think

subtle hawk

OnePlus 6T. Period.

#

@slow quiver You want camera or great performance?

#

👀

#

If you want the best camera then Pixel 3 XL (Excellent performer but those specs are warShrug )
And best performer will be OnePlus 6T
That's it

slow quiver
#

Well the thing is im not really your average or above average user with phones.

#

Ive considered the OnePlus 6T or the S9

subtle hawk
#

not the 6T

#

the light fingerprint sensor is garbage

#

middle of the night

#

FLASHBANG

tame topaz
#

Yeah iirc it uses a camera

subtle hawk
#

unlike the S10

#

which uses a ultrasound sensor

slow quiver
#

Yeeah not going there. Ive considered the S8 but the S9 seems to outweigh the s8 by alot

subtle hawk
#

and the whole screen on the back is such a gimmick

slow quiver
#

And extra stuff that the S9+ gives, I dont think for a person like me would consider paying an extra 120$ for it

subtle hawk
#

seriously doe from what it looks

#

the S10

#

even the e model

#

is miles better than the S9

tame topaz
subtle hawk
#

it also has reverse wireless charging

#

meaning u can charge another phone with urs

#

also kind of a gimmick

slow quiver
#

The four cameras is nutty tho

but I can see it being useful

tame topaz

Also good lord, 2000 dollars for the Galaxy Fold?!

subtle hawk

that's only on the S10

tame topaz

Yep, experimental tech alright.

subtle hawk

the S10+ has 5

Prior I had the OnePlus 3, and the S9+ is a great upgrade if you can find one at a good price. The S9+ has wireless charging 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD card slot. And with Samsung's Android 9.0 Pie One UI it feels less bloated and closer to stock Android IMO.

subtle hawk
#

I have the Note9 so I'll wait for Note10

stone wave
#

I normally wait 2+ years to upgrade but I realized I could get more in trade-in value than I paid for my phone.

#

And they throw in their wireless earbuds if you preorder from Samsung, and those go for $130. warShrug

Actually this is badass, thanks

tame topaz

The Fold's stylized notch looks pretty damn cool tbh

#

Opinion on it as a whole is still pretty mixed however

subtle hawk
#

I will never approve of oneplus

#

after the 2nd one

tame topaz
#

Why

subtle hawk
#

it's not following the same phylosophy as the first one

#

it's just another flagship

#

with Samsung I have knox to secure the env

#

with Google/Android One I have the compatibility and the native experience

#

with Asus I have balls to the walls performance

#

yeah

#

I would've got pocophone if waited a bit longer

#

but emergency reasons being emergency reasons

#

@ruby girder flagships aren't overpriced if you need those unique features

#

that's how their business model works

#

if you want specific top end features, pay up

#

for the average joe a mid low end phone is more than enough

#

it's the same in the laptop industry

#

if you want specific stuff like 4K touchscreen or NVMe or enterprise hardware

#

pay up

#

I've had the A1 for 1.5 years

#

and it's more than plenty for most ppl

#

but I find the Note 9 more suitable for my use

#

modularizing laptops will never happen

#

it's not a matter of demand

#

it's a matter of R&D

#

and size constraints

#

unless you want a 5 KG predator 21X type laptop then everything has to be soldered on to fit in the thin chassis

mental coyote
#

I've said that for years, Saya.

subtle hawk
#

as my engineer friend says

#

"you all think like consumers"

#

"we have to think as a business"

stone wave
#

a business thinks in terms of planned obsolescence

subtle hawk
#

let's not tinfoil

#

yeah

#

my laptop is actually the best of what I wanted

#

and it's $1000 Thonk

stone wave
#

yeah my 2014 x1 Carbon was around that price I think, it still works

#

phones though they don't seem to last as long for me

mental coyote
#

It's not tinfoil if it's arguably true.

subtle hawk
#

I said drop the subject @mental coyote

#

my only complaint is the display sometimes break and I had to smack it like an old analog TV

mental coyote
#

What company doesn't want you buying from them again in 1-3 years?

stone wave
#

lol pigdevil

subtle hawk
#

planned obsolescence is a very vague term that usually causes a lot of controversy

#

so let's not go there

mental coyote
#

Whatevs.

stone wave
#

Thank god for ThunderBolt 3

subtle hawk
#

my grandfather has the 2nd edition J5 and it still works like a charm for him

stone wave
#

if you want a light laptop that can game that stuff is a godsend i'd imagine

subtle hawk
#

even doe it's years old

#

I would be really pissed with it

#

the damn thing is slow as hell in anything but basic tasks and web browsing

stone wave
#

My dad got an iPhone 5s... it can't use the Uber app and he's run out of space so he can't install new apps on it. I just told him to get a new phone.

subtle hawk
#

why should he

#

if he's satisfied

stone wave
#

He's not.

mental coyote
#

Frankly, if you know what yer doing, you can run some shit for 3+ years easily.

subtle hawk
#

yeah

#

that's why I said obsolescence is a muddy subject

stone wave
#

I think it we're at that point where the HW is good enough for most casual users without having to upgrade as often.

subtle hawk
#

to some one small glitch in performance is already a reason to get the next gen flagship

mental coyote
#

It is. But what else can we call incremental increases in cpu performance? Cause that does seem a lot like a way to get you to consume more.

subtle hawk
#

and social status

#

you don't have to

#

I don't see people running out to buy the latest Xeon Platinums

mental coyote
#

Not everyone's as savvy, and we all know this.

subtle hawk
#

or the latest Epycs

stone wave
#

Mobile devices, I feel are partially just another form of bling to some people in a manner of speaking.

mental coyote
#

Prolly how the term you don't want mentioned got started.

subtle hawk
#

mobile devices became a part of us

#

aren't those server cpus Thonk

#

they are

mental coyote
#

Hell. Didn't drop my old Carrizo lappy till Ryzens hit the market, tbh. Didn't feel the urge, until then.

stone wave
#

Are they good or are Xeons still king?

subtle hawk
#

these things are designed to be on 24/7 for years

#

the best in all vlasses

#

Epycs abd Xeons are on p much equal ground

stone wave
#

Nice, competition is good.

subtle hawk
#

because upgrading can get very costly in that field

#

nobody puts a gun to your head tell you to go buy the new galaxy or iPhone

mental coyote
#

Competition keeps all involved sides on point. This is never bad from the consumer end.

subtle hawk
#

so to speak

stone wave
#

Oh yeah, having to replace 2 dozen CPUs at like 5 grand a pop or a lot more.

subtle hawk
#

10k actually

#

25k for the custom made ones

mental coyote
#

And that's why you wouldn't jump for joy over another 2 or 300 mhz increase.

stone wave
#

At least the more casual consumer can get away with a longer upgrade cycle as long as they're not doing content creation or high end gaming sort of stuff.

mental coyote
#

True

subtle hawk
#

but to consumers that is more than enough to warrant upgrade and yell obsolescence

mental coyote
#

We should say to "less informed" consumers. Closer to the truth, imho.

subtle hawk
#

when we all know they just want the good stuff for cheap

severe falcon
#

Good stuff for cheap at the computer section of goodwill

stone wave
#

There is good stuff for cheap IMO but they have look for it, at least when it comes to phones.

subtle hawk
#

yes

stone wave
#

An Ivy Bridge is still enough for non-gaming, non-content creation sort of stuff.

severe falcon
#

If i could daisy chain VGA monitors id look like Lain with 9 cheap square monitors

stone wave
#

I still have a square display, some 1600x1200 deal, used it for a while cause a widescreen would have been too wide.

severe falcon
#

I have like a 19" 1600x900 and a 26" 1366x768

subtle hawk
#

I'm not complaining about prices because it's my own decision to buy the top end hardware so I can be in the top 99% in 3DMark

#

still, I like how simple VGA is and how it gets difficult when LCD displays appear

mental coyote
#

That would be the key point, Yamato.

stone wave
#

I feel for the folks that bought cards when the prices were inflated.

subtle hawk
#

because you have to determine the resolution by purely checking sync signals and when the active pixels start

#

I did

#

and I have no regrets

stone wave
#

I got my 1080 just before they went higher than MSRP

subtle hawk
#

which can get really complex

#

350€ for a 1060 6GB

#

speaking of graphics card

#

then sniped a 1080 Ti for 400€

stone wave
#

nice

subtle hawk
#

but I still use the 2080 Ti if I want to make someone cry in benchmarks

#

I originally planned to get GTX 1070 for a new build but the stores I went don't have them on the shelf

#

especially in the new DLSS benchmark

#

so I'm not sure if want to invest $100 more and get Vega 64 instead

#

AMD graphics drivers are most of the time inferior than Nvidia's

#

hm yeah

#

in terms of gaming that is

mental coyote
#

Work better on linux, tho. Generally.

subtle hawk
#

I don't game that much though

#

on Linux it's hit or miss

stone wave
#

I bought a G-Sync display so I'm locked in.

subtle hawk
#

don't u dare to mention that meme

#

I wanted my new build for both content creation and gaming

stone wave
#

Couldn't find an Adaptive Sync display that met my requirements at the price point I wanted.

mental coyote
#

So. Why is G-Sync a meme ... lack of proper support?

subtle hawk
#

for me GSync was cheaper than freesync

stone wave
#

The woes of UWQHD, small selection.

subtle hawk
#

no

#

it's because gsync takes a tax and has strict requirements

#

my dad would eventually pay it for me though (if my grades are good enough) but I just wanted to keep it within reasonable price

mental coyote
#

That's annoying.

subtle hawk
#

very strict

stone wave
#

I wanted UWQHD, IPS, 100hz+ for under $900 and some how all I could find was GSync displays.

mental coyote
#

Are we talking strict like optane, here?

stone wave
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

subtle hawk
#

strict as it need to support this EXACT freq range minimum, this minimum color accuracy, etc

mental coyote
#

Now that does sound like a pain in the dick

subtle hawk
#

and needs the gsync driver controller

#

but hey

stone wave
#

I remember people were riding Nvidia's ass for the longest time until they decided to open support for Adaptive Sync

subtle hawk
#

the gsync monitors look rlly good

stone wave
#

they do

subtle hawk
#

yeah

#

and never suffer from cheapskate scams like freesync

stone wave
#

mine is great the only downside is my particular one doesnt have gamma controls

mental coyote
#

Here I thought gamma was pretty basic, anymore

subtle hawk
#

hm I should change the card back to nvidia

#

is RTX series good or should I stay with GTX

#

oh nvm I remembered my parts list wrong

#

I already had RTX2060 for graphics card

severe falcon
#

talking about these fancy monitors
my secondary monitor has 2010 laptop resolution and 30hz maximum

subtle hawk
#

oof

#

big oof

severe falcon
#

And its color is BEYOND off

mental coyote
#

holy shit

subtle hawk
#

pics?

stone wave
#

go raid a goodwill for a 1080p 60hz display

subtle hawk
#

I have 2 60 and one 180Hz

severe falcon
#

Like i keep discord on that monitor and the mods red color is almost unreadable

#

It like blurs all the pixels around it

subtle hawk
#

and yeah 1080p 60Hz screens are like $100 nowadays

mental coyote
#

I second mithikx's idea.

severe falcon
#

thinking a broke college student has $100 to spare

stone wave
#

they're probably $30 used if you're in the US and got a thrift store with monitors

severe falcon
#

Also idk if my goodwill has monitors that good

stone wave
#

colleges occasionally sell off their old equipment, you can try asking if they have a warehouse that sells off their surplus

subtle hawk
#

I'm broke every month because I had to save my money for a game console

stone wave
#

sell plasma

subtle hawk
#

and then prolong it more for my new keyboard

stone wave
#

bum it with a membrane

mental coyote
#

Well. Odd jobs about town? Hell, shovel snow during shitty weather days, hustle up some dollars.

subtle hawk
#

or sell music like me

severe falcon
#

I have money and a job but i dont have expendable money cuz i have to pay for college

subtle hawk
#

ah I see

mental coyote
#

That is a different situation.

subtle hawk
#

my parents pay for college and dorm

#

yeah

severe falcon

Yeah but im still broke, after i paid the most recent payment, my banking app notified me that i had less than $50 in my account

it's basically a prototype for my bigger project

but man the soldering part is killing me

severe falcon

Ah i see, i learned that i cannot solder whatsoever, so i stick with boards

subtle hawk

even got one burn wound because I was an idiot and forgot that the iron is still plugged

@grand hare try looking at both and the tutorials of both, but id steer clear of most youtube vids and try to find written tutorials, i did that with unreal and found some of the best tutorials for some really cool stuff. Idk about unity but unreal has some excellent documentation for it

Though im almost certain that unity is gonna be the best choice for 2d stuff

Might as well just go with a bog-standard 3.9 OC and see what happens.

Don't think I'll go much further than that.

I just dropped the usual amount and clamped it down

The thermal paste that came with the heatsink was in a packet. Pretty hard to apply.

Thing is that I wanted to learn about it from scratch

#

That‘s why I‘ve gone with that distro

That's one heck of a GPU

severe falcon
#

When you accidently OC your GPU so hard that it turns into a singularity where the laws of physics dont apply

#

Either that or you OC it so hard that it overflowed its temp value to the negatives

subtle hawk
#

Those temps are a dream lmao

severe falcon
#

Yeah currently the temps for my CPU and GPU are running about the same level as on rocket league, but im playing Ocarina of time on emulator. When will emulators become not power hungry

#

My room is currently an oven

subtle hawk
#

oof

#

Mine's always 55-60 C

#

Buy a Galaxy Fold everyone

subtle hawk
#

@severe falcon it's hard though

#

Some systems are very complex that accurate emulation would take lots of resources

#

For example, N64, although having the same CPU architecture as PSX, still be barely accurately emulated due to its not well documented chips

#

Or why Amiga takes more resources to emulate than the rest of m68k home computers and consoles
