they can help you reduce the oil drain a little bit, but it required farming time and rng gated missions, on top of getting lucky with random sub placement on the maps, not to mention that subs themselves are tricky to level since actually using them in a way that gives them any exp is a cost on top of the cost of your fleet

knocking off 20% of the mob node health with no cost is neat, but by no means necesary, or easy to achieve on maps that matter

I am pretty sure that with ships like Chaser, upcoming event having mulytiple new subs, and so on, they are planning to make them relevant for later content, but for current EN standard, they are an absolute luxury and redundancy
