The anime adaptation was passable I think... Would recommend watching from Episode 8->12 then starting on V4 if you need the refresher.
V4 is where the story gets REALLY good.
And it only gets better continuously from there.
If you do read V4 (which I really hope you do), let me know what you think.
You don't even need to buy them... all the novels have been translated pretty much for free. I buy them to support the series sales
