Windows failing to update

I have had problems updating my windows for about a year now, its got to the point that I'm getting pop ups saying I have important missing security updates. I have tried everything except fully reformatting as I have a few things on this pc that I don't want to lose/potentially lose as I may forget to transfer them over to a USB stick. Any suggestion would be much appreciated. Thanks
