#My computer is crashing and I'm at a loss ๐Ÿ˜“

I'll try to add as much context as I can so apologies in advance if it feels like a rant!

It's been happening for a few weeks now but it's a level of consistency that I'm having a hard time understanding where the issue lies. In short, my computer crashes. Visually the picture freezes and then the computer either reboots itself or I'm forced to reboot it manually. I've attached what I see, hopefully that will come through when I post.

Now this only happens when I'm gaming. It's not with every game and not consistently but it happens. Sometimes it can happen multiple times in a session, other times it doesn't happen. I can tell it's going to crash by my monitor flashing before it happens.

Now I assumed that this was a GPU related issue as it only happens when I game. I did a stress test for 20m but no issue whatsoever. I've attached that video as well.

When it comes to error codes, I've attached what I could dig up as well. If there's any other tests or anything else I need to dig up, of course I'll do what's necessary as I would really like to solve this ๐Ÿ™

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried running a stress test with Furmark - I would give that a try and see if that causes your PC to crash

Furmark GPU Stress Testing

:one: Open the link below, choose latest version on the left, then click the Orange Download button.
:two: Open up the file you just downloaded, accept the license agreement and continue through the setup.
:three: Uncheck 'Launch FurMark release notes', leave 'Launch FurMark' checked, and click Finish.
:four: Leave everything on the defaults, select 'GPU Stress Test', and allow that to run for two hours.
:exclamation: If your PC freezes or crashes while running the test, or the two hours are up, let us know.

Hey @eager patrol! Thanks for helping me out. Oh okay! I can try that. I used MSI Kombustor but I can give that one a go

fiery prairieBOT
#

cprgbglitch :tada: Congrats @sick tinsel, you levelled up to 4! :tada: cprgbglitch

sick tinsel
#

I'll do that right now and report back ๐Ÿคž

eager patrol
#

๐Ÿ‘ I'm not too familiar with Kombuster but it looks like it wasn't stressing out your GPU as much as it could have done, from your video it looks like it was sat about ~60-70% util so it's worth giving furmark a try, just incase its any different

sick tinsel
#

Gotcha!

#

Trying out these settings:

#

That's roughly what I normally play on in terms of settings

#

Okay.. so the moment I clicked "GPU Stress Test" the computer crashed immediately

#

That's what I got from the Reliability Monitor tool

eager patrol
#

That's good - at least we have got it so we can reproduce the problem quickly

I would try running DDU to do a complete uninstall your graphics drivers, then install the latest ones again, just to rule out a driver issue

Article suggestion from Harry

IMPORTANT: Before reinstalling your drivers or making any system changes, it is advised to create a system restore point.

How to reinstall your display drivers with DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller)

1. Download your GPU driver from your manufacturer's website, but don't install it yet.

a. For Nvidia GPUs: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

Image

Select your GPU using the drop down menu and click search

b. For AMD GPUs: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Image

Search for your product and press submit

c. For Intel GPUs: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/docs/discrete-gpus/arc/software/drivers.html

Image

Press 'Download here'

2. Download the latest version of DDU by visiting https://www.wagnardsoft.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=5, clicking on the top post which is called "Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) VXX.X.X.X Released", and clicking *** Download DDU Installer ***

Image

Click the link at the top of the forum, this is the latest version

Image

Ignore any advertisements on the page and only click *** Download DDU Installer ***

3. Open the program you just downloaded, and install DDU.

Image

Double click on the file you downloaded to open it

ImageImage

Click 'Next' and then click 'I Agre

That was longer than expected, best look at the article link on that one kekw

sick tinsel
#

Yeah I guess that's true. I've never done that before but I'll do so now, see what happens

eager patrol
#

No worries, hopefully we'll get it sorted soon ๐Ÿ™‚

sick tinsel
#

Okay! All done. Should I try the stress test again with the same settings?

eager patrol
#

Yep, give it a go and see if it's any different

sick tinsel
#

Crashed again within 5 seconds of the test

eager patrol
#

As we've ruled out drivers, it looks like you might have a faulty GPU - I would get in touch with the support team and they'll be able to advise further / arrange a replacement to be sorted

sick tinsel
#

It seems it's as I feared. Understood, I'll create a ticket

#

Thanks for all your help. At least I know exactly where the problem lies

eager patrol
#

No problem, they'll get back to you first thing tomorrow.

If they think it's a faulty GPU too then they can either have just your GPU replaced, they'll collect it and send you out a replacement to install yourself, or they can arrange for your entire PC to be collected and they will install the replacement & test it for you

sick tinsel
#

Sounds good! I'm all the way over in Portugal so we'll see what can be done. If it's the same card I can likely install it myself

#

If I end up going for an upgrade then less likely as I don't think this case can fit the new series kek

silk holly
#

i would say if you are confident with it to remove the gpu and try to clean the pins and the PCI socket, sometimes that does the trick

#

also, before you started to have that issue, did you upgrade your pc in any way? or overclocked it? could you post the specs of your pc as it could be the PSU that cannot power the GPU when it gets under stress and shutsdown

silk holly

olive trout
#

No, furmark is a GPU power virus

#

It will show anything

sick tinsel
#

I believe @silk holly might be referring to the video I posted on my original test where I used MSI Kombustor

olive trout
#

Ah

sick tinsel
#

I didn't have a crash during that time but Harry did point out that the GPU was only at around ~60-70%

#

I assume FurMark just absolutely annihilated my card

silk holly
#

this is a long shot (like really long) but try to do the furmark, but before do a restart on the graphics card by pressing CTRL + Windows key + Shift + B, your screen should go black for a second and do a beep and comeback to normal, then launch the furmark and see if it changes anything

silk holly
#

xD

sick tinsel
silk holly
#

it literally just reboots the GPU and clears anything that is in there (kinda like clearing the cache of your ram basically)

sick tinsel
#

Oh right

silk holly
#

also, what is the brand of your GPU? i seen is a NVidia 3060, but what is the brand (msi, zotac, asus etc..)

sick tinsel
#

It's an MSI Nvidia 3080

silk holly
#

aight, sorry 3080 xD

#

is your BIOS up to date?

sick tinsel
#

What's interesting is that it didn't initially when I was on default settings. It's when I turned them up that it crashed

#

So it feels it's when it gets to a certain level that it just can't handle it anymore

sick tinsel
silk holly
#

looks like it as well

sick tinsel
#

Froze like that, had to forcefully reboot

silk holly
#

ok... now, if it didnt reboot means that it possibly is not always power related

#

can you screenshot the display adaptors on device manager?

sick tinsel
silk holly
#

what motherboard do you have?

sick tinsel
#

MSI Z490-A PRO: ATX w/ RGB, USB 3.2, 1x M.2

silk holly
#

can you check what version do you have? you can check this on system information, and should say next to BIOS Version/Date, the date should do if it doesnt have a version number

sick tinsel
#

2.20 I believe

fiery prairieBOT
#

cprgbglitch :tada: Congrats @sick tinsel, you levelled up to 5! :tada: cprgbglitch

sick tinsel
#

But let me see in System Information..

#

Definitely not updated if that's what we're looking for ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

olive trout
#

Ah you might wanna upgrade that for sure!

#

Because your GPU came out later didn't it?

sick tinsel
#

Well I got it all together

silk holly
#

came out september 2020

#

so just after that version

olive trout
#

Yeah

sick tinsel
#

I see what you folks mean

olive trout
#

Download this

sick tinsel
#

Okay!

olive trout
#

El'Dex can walk you through the process

silk holly
#

if you dont know how to flash a msi bios

sick tinsel
#

I definitely appreciate that as I've never done that before

olive trout
#

Yeah - you shouldn't really just update the bios for no reason.

#

But this might be a fix.

silk holly
#

basically, unzip the folder to an USB or external drive, boot bios by pressing DEL as soon as pc starts up (just spam it until it gets into the bios really xD ) and then chose Flash Bios choose the usb or external driver where it is and choose the update file, bios will update and pc will reboot basically that is it

olive trout
#

FAT format also

silk holly
#

just in case, but i updated mine a few days ago and the only thing i had at hadn was my external drive (with lots of crap in it) and thats in NTFS format and i was able to update the bios with no issues.. even MSI doesn't mention that needs to be in FAT, but just to be safe FAT format

sick tinsel
#

Gotcha. Okay, I'll go grab my flash drive and try it out

#

Emptying the drive so might take a moment to have everything moved over to Google Drive

sick tinsel
#

My wife has nearly 2000 photos in this thing so it's been going for a while but still around 2hrs left ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

#

Regardless, I'll post an update as soon as I have one

#

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to give me a hand so far as well ๐Ÿ™

silk holly
#

no worries, just lets us know how it goes

fiery prairieBOT
#

cprgbglitch :tada: Congrats @silk holly, you levelled up to 6! :tada: cprgbglitch

sick tinsel
#

Okay! BIOS has been successfully updated

#

I guess I'll attempt to run a stresstest again

#

I did get an MSI pop-up after install.. are any of these necessary?

silk holly
#

At least the chipset ones i would say

#

Having drivers up to date is always a good idea thiugh

sick tinsel
#

Oh thanks! Okay, I'll get those and then do the stress test again

#

Stress test running for 3m so far..

#

No crash yet think

#

15m in.. still no crash

olive trout
#

Success?

sick tinsel
#

I think so?

#

I didn't crash with over 20m of the test

#

I booted up a game where I was finding the frequent crash and there were no flashes of any kind

#

I'm upgrading to Win 11 now

#

I got the prompt after updating the BIOS. Couldn't before

#

Once that's all done, I'll use the computer as normal tomorrow and see what happens. Will report back then

olive trout
#

Yay

silk holly

  • Support Re-size BAR function to enhance GPU performance including the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3000 series and others.
#

so hopefully this has made things slightly better, lets see if it turns out to be a solution

sick tinsel
#

Okay. I've spent the day running some tests, actually gaming to see some results

#

Unfortunately, the issue is still present

#

Crashed multiple times so it must be the GPU? sadge

#

I do appreciate the time you guys spent helping me out tho

olive trout
#

Ergh, sadly so.
