only been in one game jam before, but i would say make your idea and make a prototype for the map first before beginning the actual game. This is bc going straight off of whatever u think of may just end up looking messy and unorganized

Being open to different ideas in a in a game jam allows for a bunch of unique ideas that can be implemented into the final product.
You also build relationships with those you’re working with, which is a great thing to help with team coordination and chemistry.

plan plan plan! Really plan out what the game will be and how you will make it fun. You'll end up saving a lot of time if you actually think through what your doing, and you might end up realizing your idea won't actually work very well, or that it will take too much time to make.

Content is hard. When your planning out your game, try and rigorously plan out multiple full levels (or whatever the unit of content would be). In a lot of the past jams I participated in we came up with an awesome game idea and built all of the systems and assets first without giving too much thought to levels or story which resulted in underwhelming games.

Don't take the theme too literally. If the theme is "chain reaction", don't make a Rube Goldberg machine. Try and be creative with your interpretation of the theme, you'll end up making a more unique game that stands out. (Maybe take it literally, like a game where you have to maneuver intertwined chains and pullies to solve a puzzle)

Go out of your comfort zone and don't try to win. Its a great place to try out things and learn new skills. Try to make a game you'll be proud of.
