I was mainly going for commander Luke which I managed to get and now I’m upgrading him, but I realized that I don’t have a good team for him or any reason to level him up in particular. I also don’t really have any idea of what to farm for next.

CLS team members are required farms for other journeys and its generally a great team for all game modes. I'd work on getting them added to your roster to make the team work
In the short term, finish your Phoenix Crex and Veers troopers so you can tackle those Assault battles
