I just bought a 2070 super x trio gaming and it has 2 connectors made of 8 pins,i currently have a gtx 970 that requires 2 connectors made of 6 pins and they are attached through a 6 pin from psu and then doubled with an adapter, what do i do for the new gpu? which cables do i need to buy? currently there are only 2 connectors free,a 6 pin and an 8 pin but i dont know if thats for cpu or not,on the psu theres a (6+2 PCIE and a 4+4 CPU) the other connector (6 pin) is occupied to power the hdd's

Wow, that’s an old PSU.
Just googled it, and wow...it apparently even has the old logo.
yeahh,pc got gifted for my bday and i upgraded the mobo, cpu and ram
so yeah lmao,i hope theres some solution
i saw some people saying its a fire hazard
but i have it for a couple of years and it didnt give me any problems
plus this was an office pc
Because it’s so old, I am not sure if it would work with what you have due to the amount of ports on it.
yeahh
yup
okay so
a 6 port is already occupied
and another one which looks like another 6 pin
Can you send a picture, please?
ù
here
so the red one is occupied
the red circle is for the ports that are occupied
Okay.
the yellow one is currently being used by the gpu
and the green circle are the ports that can be "free"
Yeah, you would need a new PSU (power supply) as you don’t have enough ports.
but
i had an idea
?
to use the 8 pin and the 6 pin to power the gpu
Can’t. It’s keyed.
like buy a 6 to 8 pcie cable
I would highly NOT recommend that.
okay
well damn
because the other 6 pin port
is being used to power the hdd's
i could disconnect it but then the hdd wouldnt work 🤷♂️
If you removed the HDDs, I suppose you may be able to power the GPU.
There may be a wattage issue, but I’m not sure what the PC specs are.
r7 5800x,32 gb corsair ram, 240mm aio and nvme ssd
and gtx 970
currently
You could buy an external HDD enclosure, but I’d recommend a new PSU as it’s cheaper in the long run.
yeah
but dammit,i was so excited to try out the new gpu 🥲
Yeah.
or do i need to buy it?
Comes with all the required cables
okay,hm idk if there will 2 cables for the 8 pins but i guess that depends on the psu
well thanks
aand now even more money to spend lmfao
You’re welcome.
I’m sorry you have to spend more money, but it will be beneficial in the long run to get a new PSU rather than wait it out.
Good luck!
Cx600m should be replaced
ohh
Especially when you start having to add in random cables/adapters lol
damn
well alright then
thanks yall for the help frfr!
do i need to delete this page?
No. It’ll automatically get removed.
I put a checkmark reaction on the post to tell others that it’s solved.
Yes?
Hello! Sorry to bother you.
Could you send a picture of your specific PSU and the cables that are plugged into it?
I know you did earlier, but please.
Sure
Thank you!
Okay. Yeah.
I have two suggestions/options....
Hm?
One moment please. Typing it up.
A. Buy a new PSU. This is the best option.
B. Buy an external HDD enclosure or a NAS (Network Attached Storage) and put the HDDs you have in the enclosure/NAS. Then, hopefully, you may have more ports available on your PSU to use specifically for your GPU. I do not recommend adapters, which is what it looks like you are currrently using.
That's a good one idea
Well yes
Currently on the gtx 979 there's a molex to pcie
I didn't know since it was an office px
Pc*
And I found a new approach
Molex is really not used anymore in modern systems.
?
Yes
A 6+2 pcie which doubles it
It says it's compatible with the cx series and it's a type 3 or 4
I mean...Although that might work, I DO NOT recommend this.
Yes I understand
And that's helpful
But I'm leaning more towards it because
There's a friend of mine
Idk if i said it before
He has an older ev**a 550 psu non modular
And he's using the same thing
And he has a 2080
Same model, 2080 x trio gaming msi
Yes, although it may work, i do not recommend it. I say this because the GPU may not get enough power.
Maybe
But i think the only damage will happen to cable if there is any
Plus if it goes south,I'll refund
Makes sense yeah
Well, if the GPU doesn't get enough power....there's a risk associated with it.
Hey @strong sandal, do you know what happens if a GPU does not get enough power from the PSU?
Well, true.
Now if the psu cant keep up... lol
um yeah, it can well. blow up
Usually unlikely
Decent psus have protections against it
Kaput
but not all
I mean, we are talking about an older PSU here... a Corsir CX600M.
Not sure the PSU has those protections in place.
Yup
But hey
I'm not a PSU expert
It has bronze protection lmao
Well if it makes it better
Has surge protection
Bronze is an old tier of rating, and if I'm not mistaken, it's also the lowest/worst.
Oops
Better than none? 🤷♂️😂
Well, all PSUs have a rating. So...no rating is....don't buy. 🤣
Okay i should be more serious lol
Yuuh
Surely
That's an efficiency rating
Ohh
Does not directly say anything about safety of a unit
True, sorry for the confusion.
Okay, wait what psu do u have?
Had cx600m, moved to rm750
It alright dw,nobody is gonna shoot u
Oh
Because I have a r7 5800x
So we have kinda similiar
I have a CORSAIR SF750 PSU, I believe. Let me check the price.
🤣 Not sold anymore on CORSAIR's site...
I'm going to recommend 750 watts minimum, as a rough estimate.
Let's see prices...
Well im getting sleepy
This is USA prices, but I found this.
$119.99 USA for 750 Watts
@leaden glacier you got me to checking to see what my psu's rating was, at least under the old 80+ standard. mine is Gold
but mine is an older cooler mastter 750w unit
this is mine

Cybenetics Test
Could look at the RM750e (2025) if you need cheaper
