#

first one (lab scan) looks like a newspaper

#

mine looks more... real???

#

idk

feral vector
#

lab scans certainly have a look

jagged lake
#

mhm

feral vector
#

a lot of my lab scans definitely feel a bit more...classic

jagged lake
#

yeah for sure

feral vector
#

which is definitely a vibe

#

but they're also expensive

jagged lake
#

classic is a vibe indeed

#

yeah uhh idk if I can keep up $8/roll for scans

#

like, I get that its labor, id just rather not

jagged lake
#

this is very fun

#

think im done for now tho

feral vector
#

hmm, affinity license sale

#

Although Photo is a photoshop competitor, not lightroom

jagged lake
feral vector
#

whereas the universal license is for all apps on all OS

jagged lake
#

ohhh ok

fleet fractal
feral vector
#

i don't need the other two apps, but i am tempted to get the universal license anyways since its only slightly more than photo 2 on all platforms

verbal laurel
#

Curious, samsung photo edit, is capable of editing nikon raw image

feral vector
#

like on galaxy phones?

verbal laurel
#

Just don't know if it runs on the full quality

verbal laurel
verbal laurel
#

But since in the preview the raw photo looses some details, is hard to tell if it is using full raw, or just something in better

#

Like compatibility mode

What the fuck canon

Why is my camera manual 662 pages

verbal laurel
#

I love have a zoom lens know

verbal laurel
#

Sometimes o think the lens put so much height in the camera body

deft garden
#

Oh yeah. I also get a little sick with that though but I support the lens in my left hand so all the weight I’m supporting, not the Z mount bracket.

verbal laurel
#

I try do that, but sometimes I catch myself holding by camera

deft garden
verbal laurel
#

Especially when shoot moon

verbal laurel
#

On the 50 mm the z5 would do amazing

#

On that scenario

deft garden
verbal laurel
#

I think the problem is more me holding the bigger lens

So glad my coast does sunset beach. But still boring. It’s so flat. Nice colors though.

#

But I agree with you. I can never drag myself out of bed early enough to then drive some place well in advance of sunrise.

paper bear
#

Planes also fly on the good side of the beach

#

If i had the motivation i could get good shots

feral vector
#

Even though my camera isn't great at higher ISOs, it's still able to get good results at much higher than most film I can buy (400 iso or less)

verbal laurel
#

i just decided to use more ISO

#

and let a fast shutter speed

since with those IA denoise stuff

#

#

ā€œNot huge into planesā€
-literally an ATC

deft garden
#

This job would be great if it wasn’t for the pilots. Also didn’t get into this job for planes. The pay was good when I joined. But it hasn’t kept up with inflation and I don’t think it’s worth it any more.

#

Issue for me is skill, can’t get a same or better paying job with the skill set I have from ATC. But ATC is taxing and we’re not compensated fairly for the work we do anymore.

#

It’s 60.96 an hour. But also think, our rate is 24 departures and 24 arrivals an hour. B737 can handle about 110-165 a plane, let’s say 135 people per plane because we do get a few E175 and some heavies fully loaded to Japan, England and Munich daily.

So in one hour, I’m responsible for about 6,480 lives. In one shift that’s 51,840 lives.

60 an hour seem worth it?

#

Even if we take the lives out of it. I’m 1 of 23 people, in the world, who can legally work the airspace I work.

deft garden
#

I’m in a high COL area too. So even the National 20% over the last 4 years, year over year, wouldn’t have even helped me keep up and I’m only getting 1.6 a year over year.

elder ingot
#

@feral vector @deft garden thoughts?

deft garden
#

I honestly don’t think you’d like a rebel. It’s a mirrored DLSR.

#

Plus the lens that comes with is pretty brutal. You’d look at your starter shots vs your phone and only use your phone.

#

That’s why it’s hard for me to reccomend a starter camera to anyone like you, who’s tech savvy, but doesn’t really want to do the work or learn to edit to bring the full potential out of their photos.

elder ingot
#

I think I mentioned the other day that I'm willing to learn how to edit

deft garden
#

Still not a huge fan of the rebel. Let me ask a friend what she will say of her rebel vs going to the camera she has now.

verbal laurel
#

e.e

deft garden
feral vector
#

If you can find a deal on a used rebel kit, it can be a great learning device

jagged lake
#

rebel used for sure

feral vector
#

But the hardware is limiting

elder ingot
#

Hmm. I'll keep looking

deft garden
elder ingot
#

Well not $1000+ for starters

deft garden
#

Plenty of DLSR are will destroy a rebel 7 for 500 ish.

#

Mpb has select filter and you can put 300-500 and less and search what’s available. Do research on what they have.

elder ingot
#

That's what I was gonna do

jagged lake
#

$1650 total for mine

feral vector

On the subject of hoarding

#

I am now in possession of a roll of Gold 400 from the 90s-2007

#

Or maybe it’s kodacolor/colorplus

#

Looks to be from maybe early 2000s

#

my grandpa got a digital pointnshoot in I think 2005 (that’s what the manual says)

#

So probably right before then

#

Wonder what to use this for

feral vector
jagged lake
#

Ah

#

Well

#

This is long expired and is 400

#

So it’s cool

feral vector
jagged lake
#

Yeah I figured

#

Except superia (rip)

feral vector
#

Gold, color plus, ultramax, and pro image from Kodak
C200 and c400 from fuji

#

It's all gold more or less

#

Superia when I bought it in Japan was priced like Kodak professional films, so I'm under the impression it's supposed to be more of a professional line than consumer, but I'm not positive

#

Could have been that's what the shop priced it at shrug

jagged lake
#

So Fuji 400 is basically just gold 400 with a slightly different finishing layer?

feral vector
#

Pretty much

#

If the box says made in USA, it's gold

#

Nothing wrong with that

#

It performs a bit different and is priced competitively

#

A lot of people prefer the slight color difference of C200/C400 to gold/max

jagged lake
#

I like Fuji

#

Nice n cheap, easy to get, good for my mostly green pics

#

That is an interesting point. I went to check what I've been using. My previous camera came with a 4GB 6MB/s card which did get filled up over the years and emptied. Did upgrade to a 64GB 10MB/s micro card that was a passmedown from my phone. Upgraded to a new camera this year and I've been using a 256GB 10MB/s card, but I haven't done video and as a rule, I take one picture at a time. Travel, architecture, mostly still nature. 24MP camera (APS-C), but I do run it RAW+JPEG so 30-40MB per shot. It does not take over three seconds to write the image (the 10MB/s is a minimum), but it does take over a second. Makes me contemplate that 30MB/s discounted card very, very seriously.

#

By 'previous camera' I mean a cheap point-n-shoot that I got as a prize for a TV competition in 2014 along with a smartphone.

#

I think it was about time for an upgrade.

deft garden
#

I shoot fast moving things where burst is important, and 20 FPS well, obviously I need a fast read write. My Card writes up to 1500 MB/s. šŸ˜‚

#

And even then, after about 8-10 seconds the buffer cant keep up at that speed. Though I have yet to need to slam the trigger for that long. But I am prepping for an air show in September so IDK.

narrow pollen
#

Air show does sound like moving things.

deft garden
#

Indeed. I’m hoping to get some cool shots of the compressed moisture air coming off the planes.

Okay, practical advice, how to tell if the SD card is limiting the performance of recording video on a camera? Jitters on the recorded video?

deft garden
#

Jitters or just lower the quality on you.

feral vector
#

What camera model

narrow pollen
#

SONY ZV-E10. I found I made a mistake and I do have a V30 card in it so it should not be a problem in any way (30MB/s beats thee 100Mb/s it can record video at). I had no idea I had bought a V30 card and am pleasantly surprised.

narrow pollen
#

Holy sh, I also have a V30 in my phone. Did V30 SD and microSD cards used to be really cheap?

paper bear
#

This is a killer deal, $50aud for 250

feral vector
deft garden

v60 is a good medium speed for sure.

#

I have a v90 card laying around some place.

jagged lake
#

my new ones v90 I think?

#

v30 nvm

#

But still fast

#

So fast

deft garden

v90 is expensive.

#

I spent 230 usd on my 256 v90

jagged lake
#

Wow

#

It IS CF though right?

deft garden
#

No. Regular SD card style.

#

CFExpress doesnt follow the vxx system.

#

and this is too slow on my buffer to keep up.

#

its insane to see the jump from V90 to CFexpress though. 300 R 250 W to 1700 R and 1500 W.

feral vector
#

Ah

#

CF Express uses nvme

deft garden
#

it gets toasty.

#

The 325 GB CFexpress card is 100 USD off right now, only 250 USD and im thinking of getting it. I did an Event end of march and entierly filled my 165 GB card.

# verbal laurel how does u edit all that photos later ?

I go through, 3 star the ones I like. Delete the bad ones. Leave the ones that are ok for later in case I go back and find something I can make work with better editing skills later. Change the edited raws to 5 star so I know what’s been done and what hasn’t.

jagged lake
#

Probably not all of them?

verbal laurel
#

Well, that review process probably takes a while

deft garden

I have a Lomo camera, but no film.

I prefer digital, I'm an IT geek.

TIL

narrow pollen
#

Pardon the confusion

feral vector
#

My roommate has a lomo instant film adapter and it's pretty shit

#

I've not heard great things about their hardware products overall

narrow pollen
#

Those are neat pictures tbh

feral vector
narrow pollen
#

It's soviet mass-produced hardware for youths without money. Yeah, it wasn't designeed to be great, it was designed to last.

feral vector
#

I thought they were Italian šŸ’€

narrow pollen
#

The L in Lomo stands for Leningrad

feral vector
#

Oh I see

#

Are you talking about the current brand called lomography?

narrow pollen
feral vector
#

Okay gotcha

#

Cause the modern brand lomography makes some plastic fantastic hardware that breaks super easily

narrow pollen
#

This is what the 60's to 80's produced LOMO camera looks like. It was the most popular model they made.

feral vector
#

Thought you were referring to these guys

#

I do not have experience with the other lomography

narrow pollen
#

It is plastic, but comes in a leather case and the plastic is thick. The lens has a metal housing.

#

I bid on X-570

#

$85 and I’m winning which is good so far

#

But then

#

I see FF digital

#

I need (wamt)

#

Pricey

#

But I WANT

#

Also lenses

#

I must have moar

#

I know that my 2 for the R50 are great and effectively replace the 5 for my X-370, but I can’t convince myself that it’s true

#

I need MOAR LENSES

#

I’m lacking 46-99mm

#

and 32mm prime (50mm ff equivalent)

#

Also need a macro lens so I can STOP PAYKNG THE LAB SO MUCH TO DO MEH QUALITY SCANS

#

THIS IS NOT A RABBIT HOLE

#

THIS IS A VIETNAM WAR ERA TUNNEL

#

HELP ME.

#

THJS IS ME PLEADING

#

(I won’t stop)

#

I have $100.50 (only checking don’t worry) thx to cameras

#

Ain’t dipping into savings at all. No touchy.

#

Are macro rings or bellows decent for film scanning if I were to use the rfs 18-45 or maybe one of my minolta lenses?

#

Or are those a total nope

#

I also need a film folder but a decent one should be relatively cheap

#

And easy

#

Sorry for the spamagraph

#

Also that x570 comes with a Minolta 50mm macro

#

So maybe I try that

#

Hope I win at <$100

#

Preferably 85 or so

feral vector
feral vector
jagged lake
#

yes

#

because lenses

#

And aperture preview

feral vector
jagged lake
#

And two film stocks same time different lenses

jagged lake
#

Ok I don’t

#

Defo don’t need

#

Tbh I don’t need anything more than p&s bc I’m not pro but THIS IS FUN

feral vector
jagged lake
#

yeah that part is hard

#

Especially since apsc

#

Not ff digital

feral vector
#

Full frame lenses will work

#

But you would want like a 50-70mm macro for the crop factor

jagged lake
#

I do have a 70-200mm macro but the focus distance is too long and it doesn’t fill the apsc sensor

feral vector
#

There isn't a ton of macro options for RF

jagged lake
#

:(

feral vector
#

85mm macro might work, you would need a tall af scanning setup

#

Same with 100mm macro

jagged lake
#

wondering if I should have gone Nikon for 3party lenses but also Nikon is soooo expensive

feral vector
#

If you want 3rd party lenses Sony is the way

jagged lake
#

:(

feral vector
#

Lol

#

But the L

#

And red ring

#

Red ring is worth

jagged lake
#

I know they’re fantastic

#

But I just can’t right now

feral vector
#

How close can you focus with the current lenses

jagged lake
#

Especially since it’s only for scanning

jagged lake
feral vector
#

Rf lens?

jagged lake
#

Minolta

#

70-200 5.6 I believe

#

Annoying to use vertically since it’s a push pull and gravity won’t let it stay at 200mm

#

So I tried the 18-45 and can get like a foot away but can’t fill the frame

jagged lake
#

Yes

feral vector
#

I am wondering if your longer lens would work if you had macro tubes

#

Macro tunes should be cheap but idk how well they will work

#

Might be a "buy from Amazon and return if it doesn't help" kind of experiment

feral vector
#

They make the sleeves for all different film formats

jagged lake
#

that said folder lol

#

autocorrect and I didn’t notice

#

Holder

#

So it will stay still for scanning

#

lil frame

#

Like $50 most

feral vector
#

Oh

#

Do you have a 3d printer

jagged lake
#

Brother has one that I can use

feral vector
#

Or is there one at micrometer you can use

jagged lake
#

That too

feral vector
#

Okay

#

You can just print one

#

Gonna want all black with high infill

jagged lake
#

Alr ty

#

Also a scanning stand maybe but also a good tripod should work?

#

Have a good large light table already

feral vector
#

It would help if you can't focus super close

jagged lake
#

Well it’s currently the cheapest of cheap ones made for a cheap ring light

#

Soooo

#

It’s verrrry finnicky

feral vector
#

Just means setting it up will take a bit longer

#

Get something like this

jagged lake
#

Really? That’s better than a real light table?

#

This one’s like 16ā€ x 24ā€ or something

#

Rather large

#

Glass top

#

Fluorescent lights tho :/

feral vector
#

You can use an actual table I guess

#

We have basically a platform with a camera holder mounted to the side, then a light plate similar to those which sits on top

#

Also I think I figured out what to use the Kodak MAX 400 for

#

biiiig car show in September.

#

Lots of old cars n stuff

#

15ish year expired film with that will be interesting

#

Any tips on what to do exposure wise? Should I overexpose?

feral vector
#

Also how was it stored

#

If it was left in room temp conditions it may be roasted

jagged lake
#

Just one

#

24exp

#

Room temp but I think it was in the basement so a little cooler

#

It is in a canister so no air exposure

feral vector
#

If it was fridge/frozen, the rule of thumb I've seen online is overexpose by one stop per decade

#

15 years at room temp might be roasted tho

jagged lake
#

Wdym roasted

#

Also 15y is just an estimate. No real idea how long but it seems MAX was discontinued around then.

feral vector
#

Much more noticeable grain than usual

#

Especially in low light

feral vector
#

Cause the Kodak 400 I shot in December was also about 15 years old

#

If the car show is outside in lots of light, metering at 200iso is probably fine

#

If it's indoors and low light, maybe meter at 100iso

#

But I've only shot expired film once
