Darker Than Ink is the book and comic series I am pursuing.

That symbol is called the mark of the frenzy. It is located on the main character's forehead.

#

The main character is a member of a near extinct race of ancient magical sea dwellers. Manta'kors, manta ray/koral. Mantas for short.

#

Mantas split into two breeds. Rough-tooths and Smooth-scales. Rough-tooths are shark like in appearance whereas Smooth-scales are fish like. They are a peaceful race.

#

The main character, Akhelios, is a Rough-tooth. All Rough-tooths develop bloodlust at the age of 18, meaning that the scent of blood puts them in a frenzy. Manta and esh'ik (a close cousin to the mantas) blood does not trigger the frenzy. With the frenzy comes the manifestation of the mark on their body.
Akhelios has mutation in his magic that changes his properties and power drastically. He is able to cleanse dark magic by absorbing it and has a strong immunity to them. This mutation is The White Halo. A standard manta has magic that heals, repairs, strengthens, creates silk and pearls, and enchantments.
