@knotty cliff this is just easier than talking in leo chat
What has your vet said?
Well first of all he was being treated for what they thought was stuck shed in his eye that might have caused irritation so he got some eye lubricant
Then it spread to both eyes and they said his cornea had an ulcer or something so I got some eye drops one lot of medication and meticam for painkiller for 7 days but the eyes didn't improve so I took him back again
This time they have said that the eyes aren't reacting to light and he doesn't react with things coming close to him as well as him walking into objects so they said that they believe he has gone blind they said to stop the medication he was on and to just continue with the painkiller since the discharge and swelling of the eye had gone
Interesting. My crested gecko had a cataract and uveitis in the eye. It was causing pain so we opted for an enucleation (removal of the eye). However, she is also young and was a good surgical candidate, and had a great vet.
Does he show signs of pain?
Yeah he is constantly rubbing his eyes along the side of his enclosure whenever the painkiller runs out
I’m also just going to screenshot our conversation so far and ping @vital atlas who is also good with eye things
They did mention about removing the eyes saying that it would be a big surgery for a little guy like him and the chances of him getting through it would be 50/50 but that hopefully the eyes would be okay left in
I’ve seen geckos with limited sight have quality of life but I don’t know about a fully blind Leo
Yea, it’s a risky procedure. I was given 60/40 odds. However, I opted to go for it because I did not want my animal to live a life of pain, or to need pain management just to be comfortable (especially because she is only 4).
I’m not a vet, and I’m not going to tell you what to do. It’s your decision and it’s not an easy one. If it were me, I would not want my gecko to live a life of being in pain and struggling to eat. However, you could always speak to your vet about pain management and try other methods of feeding (I’m hoping moo may have some suggestions?)
Every animal adapts differently so it’s hard to say
Honestly, I think if surgery was the only way I don't think I would do it to him I don't think it'd be fair... I'm hoping it doesn't reach that point. But I also wonder what his quality of life is right now and what enrichment I could actually give him
I mean, from what you’ve stated I would be very much questioning quality of life
So does the vet think the eyes will improve
@knotty cliff do you have a picture of your gecko’s eyes currently
That's the part I'm slightly confused about and I should have asked more but I was definitely slightly shocked but I'm not too sure if they think his eyes will improve or not as they said they "believe" he has gone blind because of all those reasons he has another checkup in a week and 3 days I will definitely ask but if they were to get better they would give him some other medication or something right?
His eyes don't open
Like
At all?
If they aren’t opening you need to talk to your vet and ask for more antibiotic eye drops
Or maybe a different antibiotic eye drop
They told me to stop them as the swelling and discharge had gone would it be best if I double checked with them?
If he’s not able to open his eyes
Then they are probably having discharge and swelling
I imagined they would have seen when they tested his vision with the light? But you're totally right I'll ring up tomorrow and ask
You were right, thank you!
I took him back in today and they gave him some medication called Baytril, gotta admit he's costing a fortune 😅 . However, this takes me back to my previous problem, he needs to eat with this medicine and I'm not able to get him to eat alone... Any suggestions other than force feeding?
Is it possible to mix it with a liquid diet? You could call the vet and ask if you can do that
Liquid diet?
He's already opening his eyes, He seems to have like some goo or something in the top corner of both eyes that seem to be causing irritation is there anything I can do to help him with that? Or should I just leave it and hope it goes by itself
Also totally irrelevant- Are there any cheap decent sized reptile cages, my friend has sent me a link to someone selling 3 leopard geckos all in seperate enclosures but the "enclosures" are 25x25cm so they would need a bigger enclosures..
dubia is currently having a double sale (ends 28th) #enclosure-building message
