Is an 80 watt DHP sufficient heating for a 38 x 18 tank?

ime not in the winter months. im running just the 80w dhp right now and my basking spot is barely reaching 82f

you may have better luck if your region isnt as terribly cold as the pacific northwest

it does great in the summer though

The problem is my old bulb isn't heating my new tank enough

And I would get a 100w halogen but my temps are going a bit under 65 at night

you could do 2 domes depending on your thermostat

the 80w can keep temps up at night, its just not a great primary heat source in the morning

i do 2 domes and i love it
