||The skirmish was in full blaze. A falling soldier there, a scream in another place. Romeo’s hand was tightly grasped around his short sword, his gaze shooting around, making sure to shield the wounded he could from the Mauler’s blades. His shield already was less than it used to be, deep scratches in it, one corner already missing. He was far from being on his last breath, yet the rest of the squad didn’t look too good. By now he had taken control of this part of the battlefield, yelling out commands. No one had any protests against it so far. They only followed as it seemed to keep them alive. He had never expected to have landed in a situation like this, yet here he was. A scream echoed through the battlefield again, yet this time from another direction.
Before he could even react, his gaze was distracted by the body of a mauler being flung through the air, landing in the dirt still twitching. His neck was ripped open, gurgling breaths still escaping the man as he tried to crawl away. The one responsible did not care about his struggles.
Dark wings engulfed the narrow forest path for a moment as another Mauler jumped out of the underbush, his feet pushing another fighter down to the floor before a clawed hand struck his chest only one time. Enough for Romeo to hear the breaking of bones, the breath leaving his body. He could hear the Maulers calling for a different formation, retreating to form two lines. One towards the Lightbearers, one towards… this creature.||

||He wasn’t all too sure what exactly that one was. It looked like a Mauler, yet one he had never seen before. The features were something entirely new to him. Black scales covered parts of the humanoid shaped body, dark wings spread from the back both in a threatening gesture and to strike away those nearing it from behind, just like the long tail with some spikes growing from it. The horns on its head looked like a gruesome crown, almost as if made of dark bone itself. He had to gulp as he commanded for the troup to fall back, their actual commander long having been carried off wounded.
From one second to the next, the beast reared to its legs straight up from its hunched over, striking position. It towered over him easily, standing at least over six and a half feet tall. The roar that followed this display caused him to flinch up heavily, some holding their ears shut. He could swear he even felt the earth tremble slightly under the call.
Arms stretched out with bared claws, yellow eyes that reminded him of a kindled flame darting over the battlefield, its gaze fell onto the nearest soldier. It was a massacre, the maulers apparently knowing more about this situation than them. The lines falling backwards, all of the attacks aimed at this thing either were deflected by its wings, which seemed to be sturdier than they looked, or the black scales covering its arms, legs and back as well as parts of its chest and stomach. Blood drenched the dark form by now, leaving nothing but dread in the faces of the soldiers staring upon it. He had to do something. Anything. Its gaze settled on him, eyes with a fury in them staring down into his very core. Shit.||

The one in the front looked back at him, their eyes meeting for a short moment. His mouth drew into a sneer, his eyes not moving a single bit from his next target. His body was hunched over again, ready to pounce the moment he came closer.
“Draw back! Leave this to me. Take the wounded and run, bring them to safety!” What an absolute moron. Taking care of the wounded. It would be much easier to simply take care of them then and there and release them from their senseless suffering. A useless puppet would never amount to anything after all. And he wanted to stay and face him alone? What an absolute idiot.

He stumbled shortly, yet surprisingly held his position. Kind of a new thing that a measly creature like a human actually stood after one of his hits. The next few attacks were also blocked, yet he could see an increasing panic swell up on the face of the soldier. He was better than the usual trash, he’d leave him that much. ||

||With a turn and one of his wings hitting the man into the side to push him to the ground, he was finally able to rip away the shield, a kick against the stomach pushing the human to the floor before he towered over him, one clawed hand grasping the neck while the tip of his wing slammed onto the hand holding the sword. The panic rising in the green eyes of his opponent brought him the same kind of rush it usually did. His fangs bared, he was mere moments away from ripping into the throat of the man, warm blood running down his chin as he would rip it out and-

“You- Do you have any sense of self preservation at all?” The question kind of came unexpected, but also not too much so. It was fair in the current situation. Not everyone’s logical response to almost being killed was starting to flirt with their potential murderer after all. But as long as it bought everyone else time to get away from the battlefield, the answer to this was actually…. he had to gulp shortly before putting on his smile again.

Romeo could only see the arrow sticking out of the rather exposed lower back of the man. At least the scales there seemed to be softer and more flexible. Gulping, he saw how the Mauler already bared his teeth, ready to storm after the attacker.
“Wait. That’s probably a trap.”
“I know. At least then they’re balled together for the slaughter.” Oh. So he voluntarily would run into there to- oh no. He couldn’t let that happen. Nier might be someone of… questionable morals at best, but still, he seemed to possess reason.
“Wait. How about a deal? You keep away from the battlefield for today and I do my best to take a look at the wounds you can’t take care of yourself? That arrow seems to be lodged in deep. If you rip it out like that you might damage your organs.” The reveal seemed to let the other hesitate. For a moment he just stood there, tail whipping from one side to the other before he let out an almost annoyed sigh.

“And what do you get out of this? You’re aware that even if I let you run, the next time we meet I’ll rip out your throat after all?” Ah yes. Possibly. He was aware of the Mauler mentality - each person for themself. Nothing like compassion for a dying person or empathy for another one. At least that’s what he’d been told during his military training. Romeo had to gulp shortly, yet brought himself to smile, albeit lopsided.
“I know. But I still don’t want to let somebody suffer simply because we’ll be enemies again. I- I know it’s dumb. I’ve heard that often enough. But that doesn’t mean I’ll stop anytime soon.” Again, the stranger looked at him with that questioning look, as if to find any kind of statement on his face. The soldier chuckled humorlessly, pointing at the bag fixed on his belt.
“I got some supplies in here. Although I think we should change the place to look at your wounds.” A beat of silence followed that made him consider whether or not he was about to be sliced in half after all. Yet with a short smile, Nier simply sighed, gesturing for him to follow. Where to, he didn’t know nor did he really care at the moment. It was a small success that he trusted him with this much already. Maybe he could reach a bit more even.
