In the JP lore, Safiya took back the throne from her usurpers so I decided he played a part in the war but not directly deal with her politics. Who is the lightbearer then that fought him toe to toe that also walked off again as they retreated, if it's not Thane, who was described as the best swordsman?

i have more reason to believe that Baden is not an uncle but most probably the father or the eldest brother. Because, as far as succession goes, if a father dies the eldest male heir should take the place of Baron. If there is no male heir and female succession is not a thing, then they will make the second eldest brother of the baron (uncle of estrilda) be the heir of the title. And the thing is, is Estrilda's lore, brothers were mentioned. So before Baden (assuming to be an uncle) can even get a chance, estrilda's brothers need to die, but they all (or at least the last one) died at the skirmish.

Oh basically he never really met anyone of his own tribe, therefore he doesn't even have any sense of belonging. The only thing he learned from a young age on was the mindset of the Maulers, kill or be killed, strike first or you'll be struck down. He doesn't use any weapons, since he always used his 'natural weapons' and is used to overpowering enemies by outliving them.
The truth is that he's from an old tribe of dragons (we know dragons exist as they are from one of the library stories), those that adapted to hide among other maulers by shifting into a human shape. But he never learned about his heritage or ancestry.
Under his angry facade he actually is.... a soft boy if he was given the chance to
don't ask him if you're allowed to braid his hair tho, he's very distrusting towards strangers, which is basically... everyone
His favorite quote is probably "Mercy and trust are for the naive."

Matthias - The Wayfinder

Ultimate: Orbital Passage
Matthias calls forth the power of the stars from his astral globe and raises it above him, revolving violently while releasing a burst of stars. This deals immense damage. Enemies surrounding Matthias are stunned and their accuracy will be reduced by a certain amount temporarily.

S1: Morning Gate
Matthias will cast out a harsh light at the enemy side of the battle field, temporarily stunning them and dealing damage.

S2: Star of Peril
Matthias will temporarily pin an enemy with a yellow radiating star, immobilizing them and making them a target for other enemies to hit. If the enemy died with the star intact, the enemy participants that attacked the target will have a portion of their energy be drained, and a portion of it will come to Matthias as energy replenishment

S3: Astral View
At the start of battle, Matthias will roll out a celestial map that carpets the whole battle field, providing accuracy for all allies for a certain amount of time and knocking back all enemies to the edge of the battlefield, dealing damage. The map cannot be avoided by enemies on ground level.

SI - The Astral Scroll - An astronomical map lined with gold, perfectly depicting the entirety of the Esperian sky.

SI Skill: Evening Gate
Whenever Matthias activates the "Morning Gate" ability, he will cast a black hole at the ally side of the battle field, taking away most enemy caused debuffs.

Furniture Skill: Star of Hope
When “Star of Peril” is executed, Matthias will also pin its strongest ally with a yellow radiating star. When the marked enemy dies with the star of peril still intact, the marked ally will receive a great portion of energy.
