I don't agree, I think that if they wanted them mentioned, they would have mentioned them. Plus, there's a little thing called inferencing. We can inference that Thane is the champion in Brutus' story because it perfectly fits his character. It could be thane before his arm was cut off, or they could have left that out to create even more mystery.
