Definitely cheek bones are facial aesthetic that is hard to pull off right. You either look dignified or with a strong force of personality or you look sickly, gaunt in the negative beauty aspect, or decrepit

Also drawing with references is totally valid! It is actually good to do so since you learn from it, as in subconsciously study anatomy and perspective!
Besides even a lot of top tier artists use references all the time, many really good ones even use 10-20 references for their art! There's no shame in using refs, nor should anybody invalidate their art just because it isn't drawn "from imagination"
