We’re there for 3 weeks starting the 26th and we begin in Fukuoka - but in fairness I think a lot of the things the average tourist likes to see and do are those places. I will also be going to Nara, Himeji and Hiroshima/Miyajima but admit none of those are far off the beaten path.
