Any particular kind of food you're after? I made a list a while back: Some of my favorites in the Asakusa area are...

Nonkiya (standing outdoor grill/izakaya). Everything here is very cheap and tasty. None of the staff can speak English. This is a much better alternative than "hoppy dori" drinking street, because these places have become tourist traps in recent years.

Iioka (oops, that closed. Removed this one)

Tendon Tenya Tempura (Tempura rice-bowl dishes) This is a chain, but the original shop is in Asakusa. This is the highest quality tempura you can get for the price. I highly recommend it. It is popular, so you might have to wait.

Kibitaro Ramen (Chicken-based ramen) Unusual chicken base. They say there is the essence of an entire chicken in one large bowl here. This place is open late, and I like that.

Honjin - (Yakiniku) This shop is ran by an older couple. They might do things a bit slowly, but there is good cost performance for the meat. The oxtail here is very good.

Bar HAHAHA (various izakaya-style bar foods) Everything that Kentaro makes here is excellent, from his salads to his fried chicken. He has a lot of dishes with cilantro, if that's your kind of thing. Lots of other great items too.

Like prob my top 3 moments was the night I ended up off some little street in a restaurant drinking a whole little bottle of sake and eating the best sautéed pork ever. Just so cool. Starry is based on Shelter. The venue that Hiroi (drunk bassist) plays is based on Shinjuku LOFT

but Shimokitzawa has dozens of live house venues, you should definitely check out the scene
