My initial interest in visiting came from playing Ghost of Tsushima and watching Shogun lol. So I got excited by the thought of just seeing some do the beautiful landscape. But as I did more research leading up to booking I found myself super excited about the nightlife and checking out Golden Gai

i was just gonna say if you plan to head up to kegon falls, timing might be a lil tight because you have to get back by 4.30 and the bus queues are super crowded from the kegon falls stop

id recommend just spending your entire time in and around the temples, there's a lot of great foliage and a nice lil walk around too

i took the same train from shinjuku last year and got there around ~11.30am, didnt have lunch and just went to the temples

and i only finished roaming around and heading to kegon falls at around 3 or 4

If theme parks are important to you, then go enjoy them. I would much rather be bored sitting around a nice coffee shop than going to any amusement park, but that’s just my preference. You definitely won’t run out of things to do in Tokyo for the duration of your trip, so you have to make a compromise either way

I have heard good things about the parks here as opposed to US theme parks

Nikko is tough to fully enjoy in just one night, so you could consider saving that for a different trip

Oh and if you meant you’re doing a Nikko day trip I’d say definitely just stay in Tokyo instead

That’s a lot of travel for just one day, so a large portion of your day is just spent traveling

For Nikko you need to decide whether the x hours you spend there is worth the 4 hours travel.

I'm planning on doing a Nikko day trip myself. I think the only way i could make it work so it's worth it time wise is by starting very early, aiming to depart at 6am to arrive in Nikko by 8am. Especially as things will start to close around 16:00-16:30 when the sun sets.

This is also from my perspective of living on a small island so travelling a long distance on a train is still part novelty to me and not just inconvenient.

I haven't booked the train yet (availability was ok when i looked on Sunday). Just narrowing down a few parts on my plan and will book a swathe of trains in the next day or two.

Just googled the Spacia X and it looks fantastic. I hadn't even heard about it - my plan was shinkansen from Tokyo station to Utsunomiya then the JR Nikko line onward

I'm staying pretty near Tokyo station so i've mostly focused on routes from there

Having looked a bit more at spacia x, I initially just saw the non-standard options. The "standard seat" is much more in line with my expectation of what a train should look like

but i highly recommend staying for a night at least, its a beautiful place

a half day (counting transport time ofc) isnt enough imo

I'd love to stay the night, but i'm heading to Nagano early the next day so i need to finish the day in Tokyo.

I'd initially sacrificed Nikko when planning my trip, but greedily added it back in towards the end. I decided that 8 hours (08:30 - 17:00) would be worth it, even if it means i may have to sacrifice the Okunikko area.

I generally take an approach that i'd rather have a busy day to see some of an area and accept i can't see it all, than to forgo it entirely for a more relaxed pace in fewer areas. (an approach that seems unpopular on reddit)

As for trains, i'm staying near Shinbashi, so it'd take me around 30-40 minutes to get to Asakusa for a further 2hrs ish to Nikko. I can get to Tokyo station in 10 mins, 50mins to Utsunomiya, then 40 mins to Nikko. Accounting for buffer/layover time there won't be much difference between the two
