Some of my favorites in the Asakusa area are...

• Nonkiya (standing outdoor grill/izakaya). Everything here is very cheap and tasty. None of the staff can speak English. This is a much better alternative than "hoppy dori" drinking street, because these places have become tourist traps in recent years.

• iioka (Traditional Japanese food) A friendly older couple run this shop. The cook might seem a bit grumpy, but he's been a world-class chef for many decades. He and his wife do various seasonal dishes, very reasonable prices.

• Tendon Tenya Tempura (Tempura rice-bowl dishes) This is a chain, but the original shop is in Asakusa. This is the highest quality tempura you can get for the price. I highly recommend it. It is popular, so you might have to wait.

• Zai's (Korean food). This one is over by the Bandai HQ building. On Fridays, he does the best samgyetang for lunch, it is big and tasty.
