What do you think of starting the Uji day with a morning trip at Fushimi Inari Taisha early in the morning at 7 AM?

I couldn’t find other days to fit that in my other 4 days at Kyoto.

I started Fushimi Inari quite early and then finished it early in the morning

and then went over to Uji

Honestly Fushimi Inari was quite meh to me

Going up it that is

The gates are nice, but honestly the historical stuff at the bottom is what interested me most

Kyoto is interesting and nice

but I honestly had a far more memorable and wonderful experience doing onsen towns and tohoku region

Just the bus rides up and down the mountains for the onsens are breathtaking

I enjoyed those areas more since they are less frequented by foreign tourists, the towns are much smaller giving you a more down to earth feel

Not to mention and this point is very important to me

kyoto for me is much much nicer to live in to visit

as someone that visited decades ago pre current boom

I prefer my money going to these small towns and businesses who are in much more need of foreign tourism money than say Kyoto

A lot of these onsen towns survive on tourism and having spent a lot of time in many of them this trip

no we need the money but just cause our city government is shit at finances xd

It is disparaging and depressing to see so many ryokans and hotels shut down or close due to the passage of time or lack of money

Plus you find some great hidden gems

A wonderful quiet ryokan with a good dinner and breakfast, great service, relaxing onsens, and a nice room for only $100 USD a night

Hmm, maybe, I just spotted that in a shop inside Kyoto's shinkansen station, while looking for a shinkansen fork/spoon for my nephew kek

There are too many things I have no clue what's inside so

yeah the most common form is the triangular ones with fillings, but they also sell them as plain mochi, and as dried mochi biscuits

the classic version is flavoured with cinnamon

matcha is also common because it's kyoto

and there are some funkier ones like various fruits and nihonshu

they're really really easy to find, you can get some small packs at the train station souvenir shops and around popular tourist areas to try. The fresh versions just have very short expiration dates.

personally I find warabimochi a much more enjoyable experience of kyo-wagashi
