Is there a difference between temple and shrine?

temples are buddhist while shrine is shintoist. Shintoism is the traditional religion here, but both types often get mixed up in Japan.
so if we want to go to gotokuji we need to make sure first they do the traditional new year celebration

Just checked, gotokuji also does hatsumode. But it's only until 6pm, so maybe we should meet a tiny bit earlier
