Sorry if this seems a little dumb but how do I actually take photos in the photo mode? I found F10 in a control list in the everspace wiki website, but that doesn't seem to work for me - or idk where it gets saved.

The default keybind to enter Photo Mode is Z.
Your screenshots can be found at %localappdata%\ES2\Saved\Screenshots\Windows.

Correct, Z is the default key to enter Photo Mode, then to remove the HUD that's the H key.
F10 takes a very high res picture that is saved in the location list above. 20-40mb .png typically
If you use Steam overlay, you can take a smaller resolution picture with the Hotkey set in there too. (Usually F12 iirc)

For Steam screenshots: The default keybind for screenshots is F12 as mentioned by Garry. You may find the screenshots in your Steam Library's Game page (there is a button that will lead you to the latter), or via the screenshots folder at "(Your Steam Install Location)\userdata\(friend code)\760\remote\1128920\screenshots".
To note:
- Your Friend Code can be found at the Add a Friend page in Steam. It's also used as a pseudo Steam User ID, which is used as an identifier for your screenshots folders.
- 1128920 is the Game ID for EVERSPACE™️ 2 and this will not change.
