I haven't had this issue on PC, but I also haven't had to push Shift+F3 to use crossplay. Can you invite eachother through the in-game friends menu instead?
Not just the character. The whole game stops receiving input and we have to Alt+F4
why do you need to hit shift+f3?
(obviously that sucks and it shouldn't happen, but i think you can avoid it)
to send an invite on epic games launcher

We've reached out to Epic. Something is going on with their overlay system.
In the meantime as a workaround use the in-game Gunfire friends list from the menu.
It should replicate your epic friends list in there without having to open the overlay (just a lot more button presses)
Just to add to that, it also affects cross-play, as my friend who is on xbox also cant control her character while joining my PC session
