You need all world bosses (Losomn, Yaesha, Labyrinth, Nerud, Root Earth) to unlock apocalypse items. Just killing the last boss wont help you.

It's possible to "cheat" the kills. You can just check "join game" randomly on apocalypse difficulty and if they are in the boss zone join, just wait for complete / join for the fight and you still get kill even if you die during the fight. Theres some bugs n stuff since your not host that like last boss might not register for you to first time.
