I have a 2011 toyota camry with the 3.5L v6 (all stock), which I use for everything including various road trips to places I haven't been before. I'll often get on ramps with no knowledge of the speed limit, traffic, and length of the ramp. so I'd like to make the car a little faster without destroying it or spending thousands.
I've read that a properly done cold-air intake filter could slightly help with fuel efficiency, horsepower in the 4-6k rpm range, and make the car louder (which may help with safety). I saw a video of someone with an expensive KN intake on the same car, and reportedly it worked well. and I'm thinking a cheaper one like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JQHW33B this would get me close, but I'm not sure. it also doesn't seem like an oiled filter, but having the pipe and frame alone would probably make it easy to get one in the future, if it's needed. but ultimately I don't know what I should look for or avoid when making such an upgrade.
Another thing is that my car's engine bay looks different from some other camry's of this same year and engine. There are 2 boxes the current air intake seems to pass through, with the one closer to the engine being the air filter and the further one some kind of mystery box I have found absolutely nothing about, not even in the manual. Does anyone know what this is? what are the implications of bypassing this mystery box?
