first thought is a MK5 or MK6 Golf.
you could also get an early 2010s passat.
the Audi A3 or A4 are just reskinned VW and could be options.

if you wanna go Diesel then I know a lot of people are fans of the 1.9TDI engined golfs.

you could also look at pre 2016 Volvos.
something like the V70, V60 or V40 are all decent daily drivers.
or if you don't want a wagon you could get the S60

if you wanna go small then there's the Suzuki Swift which is a fan favorite for a lot of people.

go for the gas ones, avoid Diesel ones especially those who don't see a lot of highway driving

in that case make sure they're well maintained and see mostly highway miles.
Diesels tend to not agree with short trips
