#What should I do before modifying my car?

I have an 08 Infiniti G35x with 200,xxx miles on it.

Just wanting to do some simple stuff like

  • Dual Cold Air Intakes
  • Plenum Spacer
  • MAYBE a down pipe
  • lower it
  • and then a tune for those awesome burbles.

What maintenance is good to do before?

Every single rubber suspension part

I'm going to shamelessly copypasta myself from another post

Like Mango says, everything rubber and plastic is questionable, as its age and not mileage that kills them. To be safe on the road and reduce the risk of you getting stranded (and to ensure that your fun car can actually do fun driving with less risk of mechanical failure), a few key items you want to check and replace if questionable. Tires: do they match? Correct pressure (on the door sticker, not the pressure on the tire)? Find the date code, make sure they’re less than 8-9 years old. How’s the tread wear, is it even? This can indicate suspension items that need attention
Next, chassis. Check your ball joints and tie rod ends for play. YouTube can show you how to do these checks. These are a proper safety issue as if they fail you lose control of the car.
Next, brakes. Do the pads have enough life in them? Do you get any shaking when slowing down from highway speeds? That could indicate warped rotors, cheap and easy DIY job.
Next, belts and hoses. Don’t get left stranded. Check for cracks on the belts, and check for slight bulges in the cooling hoses.
Next, fluids. Replace all of them. Oil of course, but also: coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid. Good preventative maintenance.
If you’re new to wrenching, everything I just mentioned is DIY friendly and great stuff to learn doing. You do all of that and I’d bet you’ve mitigated a couple of future breakdowns or headaches. Plus it’s fun to do. Cheers!

You have one more fluid than the subject of that post - change your diff fluid too

Next time I hear a kid with an infinity asking about crackle an pop tunes I am going to torch a grass field.

Isn't plenum spacers a thing for carburettors?

Oh god…. I didn’t even notice that bullet point. OP, a burble tune is fun for about a week. Don’t do it, or if you do, get a switch tuner so you can turn it off.

I had mine set to RPM, I was also trying to blow the cats out though

#

4k+ it popped

Well. The burble is achived by excess fuel being injected causing pops, but the extra fules burns out your cat.

Also burble reduces timing a lot so it blows up in the exhaust

Mango, the way I’ve seen switch tunes executed in the past is a controller in the glovebox

Pay for less tunes

Oooooh

# slate oriole whats wrong with infiniti kids wanting burbles it's just another person who want...

the issue is that most of them will have burble or nothing so it's non stop burbles and pops that are loud.
then they'll make the exhaust louder to amplify it and will always drive to redline bouncing off the limiter if not straight up street racing or revving all the time.

it's fine at a track day or a spirited drive but when it's all the time and you wake up cause they're having a meet or street racing outside your house you just wanna throw bricks at them

#

there's also the fact that they're terrible for the car and the enviorment but shh

# desert jolt Pay for less tunes

in theory that makes sense, but it’s gonna be a bluetooth tune and i don’t have control over that. i’m sure they’d not allow that or if they did, wouldn’t charge less for it

slate oriole

it would be on for like 5% of the time

or with the app they will send me

Honestly the first thing to do is invest in a good kill switch

#

These things are huge targets for theft

#

They'll usually break through the sunroof, get to your OBD port, and then the car is theirs in 2 minutes

slate oriole
#

what do they do with the obd2 port

mystic needle
#

Basically, they program a key to your car. Same way that dealers do it when you lose your keys

#

then they drive off with it and trash it

#

idk how an anti theft tune works

Abti theft mod: add a clutch pedal TCC_BackAtYou

I’ll go against the grain here for a minute: if a thief wants your car they are going to get it. Don’t go nuts trying to prevent it. Around me, they are rolling up with a flatbed and just driving away with your car, so no software, kill switch, or immobilizer will stop that.

#

Yeah my cars the economy model so it’s not exactly a target

#

Prob gets to a point where the car should just be parked in a garage

mystic needle
#

Infinitis are targeted a lot (at least the sedans are), I'd say it's necessary to understand the most common way they're stolen and what countermeasures deal with that

#

Every takeover is full of stolen ones, a lot of the posts I see about them on insta are people asking for help finding their stolen Infiniti

#

if it's garaged then you'll probably be fine but I still would be cautious

# mystic needle idk how an anti theft tune works

im not super familiar with tunes, just started looking into them. but from what i understand, they modify the amount of fuel and air ratio to maximize performance. and an anti-theft map (setting/preset) will cut off one of them (probably the fuel) similar to the kill switch but instead it’s done by the ECU

#

and you switch the tune setting by either an app on your phone or the steering wheel when the car is powered on
