#1993 Mitsubishi 3000GT Common Problems
31 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
The biggest problem with the 3000GT is that doing ANYTHING with it sucks ass. You can’t change the spark plugs without removing the intake. Most of the accessories are inaccessible. The electronics are expensive to replace and fail quite often. It’s not a fun car to work on due to how little space there is in the engine bay
Depends on which model you get. Regular V6 FWD? It’ll be fine-ish. 24v or AWD or AWS or vr4? In ascending order, the driving enjoyment increases as does the wrenching PITA factor. But in truth, you probably need a Mitsubishi forum for the level of advice you are seeking
All the active shit that it might have, it's all broken
Yeah, best advice here, DON’T buy a 3000GT unless you WANT a 3000GT. If you’re buying it because it’s your all time favourite car and you’d do anything to have one, then by all means do it. But if you’re buying it because it’s cheap and you just want a sports car, there are so many better options out there
yeah no i want one because i reall would fucking love one
Yeah im planning on buying a SL 3000gt
or
well i plan on it anyways
yeah im well aware of that. My stepdad is a mechanic/car restorer and he has worked on a few of them and i've seen their enginebay they are so fucking cramped
thanks for the info. Ill do some research
because yeah. i love American Muscle cars. But im also wanting to try out JDM cars. Because i find very few (Including the 3000GT) to be very attractive cars and i also would just want to expand my knowledge on cars by personally getting my hends on/in the car
Well if you do get one, don’t let it put you off of fixing cars. The 3000gt will make you hate car maintenance for how annoying it can be, but it’s the exception, not the rule
Just buy an eclipse GST/GSX
Easier to find and far better than 3000gt with more aftermarket parts
Bigger community and easier to work on
I can understand. But i want a 3000GT. yes im am more than aware of how much they can be a bitch to work on. But I'll still put in the work to it. Im more than willing to go through hell and back for that car tbh
😂 thats exactly what i said when i bought my first dsm but after the 583th consecutive breakdown on the road and having to wait weeks to get parts for it i gave up
theres a reason 3000gts are rare
I'll commit to it tho
Trust
I just mostly love the looks ove 3000GTs, yeah their engine bays are fucking packed and you have to probably pull the engine to do basic repairs. But I'll commit to the car. I just love 3000GTs
once again i recommend listening to people who've dealt with those types of cars in the past, however if you do wish to work on an endless money pit that will spend more time on jacks than on the road then by all means go for it
I'll make it reliable tbh frfr, just gotta get to workin frfr
It’s never gonna be reliable. I know it’s a hard pill to swallow but when you’re working with 30 year old cars, especially ones that technologically advanced for their day, stuff is just gonna slowly keep failing overtime. You might get it mostly working, but it’ll never be truly perfect 100% of the time
My best recommendation for the 3000gt is to find an unmodified one and DON’T MODIFY IT. Sorry if that was your plan but these cars have a pretty fragile drivetrain. They’re actually pretty reliable overall for what they are, but the second you start trying to push more than 400hp, the transmission, transfer case and even engine can grenade almost instantly
well said, even unmodified they have many issues simply because theyre old cheap sports cars
I could probably find a way to put in Pontiacs Grand Prix Engine into it. It's very similar in formatting atleast, maybe not so much in like parts. But it's still a FWD V6, and my mom has squeezed over 250k miles out of it without needing major mechanical repairs. Mostly bc it was services oftenly, only reason why it doesn't run is because a seal broke after it sat for 7 months and my uncle drove it somewhere that it couldn't go and drove it until it was smoking.
I doubt it would fit in there, and honestly the engine that’s in it is durable enough that an engine swap wouldn’t be necessary.
On a side note, What are your thoughts on the 2007 Dodge Magum RT?
Eh, never really liked them. They’re kinda cool in that they’re basically a station wagon dodge charger but they’re honestly not very good cars
