#4runner 2006 aftermarket radio
144 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
The radio you posted does not have an input for wheel controls. There are often adapters from wheel control to name brand head units.
So is there anything i can do to get wheel controls on this or do I have to buy a different radio?
Its an offbrand amazon radio
You need diffrent radio
Also check if the radio you are buying has an addapter for the 4 runner controlls
I'll prolly just use it without the steering controls then
it comes with a remote that attaches to the wheel
That sure is a solution lol
Exactly haha
I guess the crux is completely useless without the steering wheel port so imma just return the radio
any recommendations for a radio with a steering wheel port thats around $200?
Dual DMCPA70BT lists as steering wheel control compatible but Crutchfield suggests a crux CS-TJ20
Interestingly, they also list the SWRTY 61J as not compatible with the 06 4Runner with synthesis speakers. Though I selected the “without factory navigation” option.
What about this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08N5LXNY4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ABO907060G8YG&psc=1

The swrty 61j supports the boss brand
should work
There you go. Good find. Let us know how it goes!
Is there anyway I can figure out which harness to use without removing the radio? I'd rather get this wired before I take apart the dash
A is on the left B is on the right
I think it's type A but I'm not sure
Doco from the harness manufacturer?
They probably have a “use A if JBL stereo and use B if Mark Levinson” or something like that
If you got a manufacturer and part number for your harness I got a few minutes I can check their website
It says A for newer models and B for older models
doesn't say what models means
Would it be the B since i don't have an oem camera in my car?
Its the harness that came with the crux swrty 61j
B is a solid guess, because it looks in that doco like A has features you don’t have. Checking other spot, one moment
Yep, all the doco I can find just says older and newer. So dumb.
Alright
Also it says in the manual to set volume to 70% and fade to center, but wouldn't that reset when the battery is disconnected?
Or do i not need to disconnect the battery when replacing the radio
I saw a YouTube comment saying their passenger airbag went off when they took the dash off so idk
I’d disconnect the battery, and I’m not sure if it resets or not but since you’re retaining the factory amp there’s a decent chance that’s a method to make sure the factory amp gets the right parameters passed to it before you hook up new stereo
Trying to install it but the radio won't pull out

followed this guide and took out every bolt he said to take out https://youtu.be/seQEEFRBNGo?si=ToAY4oYGiwhMpbMZ
Parts linked in the description below!
Watch a full tutorial as a 2003 Toyota 4Runner will have a Pioneer AVH-1440NEX Double Din Touch Screen Radio installed. This 4Runner came with the factory RDS radio and JBL Synthesis sound system. We will retain the factory amplifier using the correct Crux adapter while adding Apple Carplay, AUX, USB, DVD...
Nvm just had to pull up and out
Okay so my car uses type B, type A won't fit. But type B doesn't have a parking brake cord, so how will my radio work without it?
It probably has a jumper wire
Wire it up and see what happens @burnt spire
What head unit is it and where did you buy it
What does that mean
using it with the crux swrty 61j
It probably has a way to bypass it
Also rip
BOSS head units are not very good
I've had one vehicle that came with one and it was doa
better than the random chinese brand i almost bought
Boss is basically a random Chinese brand
so what do I do with the wire then
So it does not have a wire on the connector or it has one and you don't know what to do
The crux adapter doesnt have it but the radio harness does
You'll probably have to splice it into the park brake switch then
I think that's how they usually are if I remember right
I always just pay crutchfield to put my harnesses together
Also you bought a dash kit right
No
You'll probably have to do that
Idk what that means
It says online you can attach it to the chassis of the car so its always on
idk if that will work though
Crutchfield says that is needed
Also you could've kept your steering wheel controls https://www.crutchfield.com/p_249CSTJ20/CRUX-CS-TJ20.html
isnt that what the 61j does????
Idk ill try mounting it with the one that came with the stock radio
the 61j manual says it keeps steering wheel function
I looked it up and that says it's for 2012 and up toyotas
Maybe the info I see is wrong
Yeah my box says 2003-up

Crutchfield contradicts itself
The guy in the tutorial i sent uses this https://www.ebay.com/itm/281345136450?hash=item41817a1742:g:uh8AAOxyXDhSf9Eb&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5338913480&customid=&toolid=20012&mkevt=1 but id rather get it set up today
The vehicle selector says it isn't compatible but the details say it is
The head unit will work without a parking brake signal
Ye but I want to use android auto
You just won't be able to use certain features
Idk i guess ill try taping it to the chassis
My alpine will let me do everything except for set it up and edit advanced pass filters and stuff
If you didn't already have the stuff I'd recommend ordering from crutchfield
Because they include all of the installation information and have the best customer support I've ever spoken to
They send you something like this when you order stuff for your vehicle
Just something to consider in the future I guess
Could I have it connected to the ground wiring or is that dangerous or something
like having the ground from the 61j, the ground from the radio, and the parking brake wire all connected together
also do I connect the "remote output" to the "amp turn on"
Remote output is the signal for the amp to turn on
All of the metal sub-dash should be grounded so it's fine
So i can wire it to this metal on the radio?
I'd recommend wiring it to the actual dash structure
If it's just looking for ground
so anything metal thats inside there?
It should all be grounded
Ok
Ok I think the parking brake wire is grounded now
it lets me connect to bluetooth but android auto wont connect, and my phone says the USB cable is unstable
Tried 2 different cables and it still won't work
Nvm 😢
Yeah imma buy that soon, tons of extra space on the sides
Nice work mate
How do I get the FM radio to work?
there was a third plugin for the radio which i assume is for the radio antenna but i can't plug it into my new radio
do I need to buy a new antenna?
I don't remember exactly, it was smaller then the rest though, kinda square shaped
it didn't look like an rca
It could be different from the style I'm used to but that is probably for the antenna
actually i do remember seeing 2 rca type plugs, those were probably the antennas
i thought those were the lr speaker cords
I'll try plugging those in whenever i buy the dash kit
GG @burnt spire, you just advanced to level 4! Chat more to level up and earn top roles!
Those probably were the pre-amp outlets. Good chance the antenna needs an adapter, but they’re usually cheap. Hit up Crutchfield and put in that model of radio, they’ll tell you which adapters you need
Yeah ur right
Probably just gonna get this and return it if it doesnt fit https://www.amazon.com/RED-WOLF-Aftermarket-2010-2016-Replacement/dp/B07VFTPJMM/ref=sr_1_11?crid=2HDDZJL7JOXEX&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.BbymjQ8x1y_7Dj7aD9YcXhoDkuXO8QiiRd8H-IvOpB4fu250P2sNY2Pc0psTTkWbz_64X-aZN2Q9tvLzBM_iZStR0E2N6nGQbtuD9E92KM_mgyzUFpKEuDJ0nVz3dN_TWWHCLFhjMrXh01kc5hOoMUPcH8hxLyMucb_WKhm4l7qmOPU1kZh2cSn__75Jq7JyGeu_oSpIjH0CGrHseer4mTsWaxLGpRulSbU4VHwuQwU.0S7QxcMnn9vbvMkU4Nnot77frZEm8vrRgV0F2VQ-7hA&dib_tag=se&keywords=4runner+radio+antenna+adapter&qid=1713737851&sprefix=4runner+radio+antenna+adapter%2Caps%2C125&sr=8-11
I tried it just showed interfaces for my car
Do I click on parts once I select my car
Installation equipment
If you can't find it call crutchfield tomorrow
Their support is amazing and US based
^^^this
I've spent so much through crutchfield that they send me catalogs 🥲
An example of how good their support is was when I put a double din in my super duty and the dash kit came with screws that weren't countersunk
I called the support line and they were able to tell me the thread pitch of the screw I needed
