Hello, my girlfriends has been having an on and off cylinder misfire of just cylinder number 5. We’ve been writing it off as the cold because the engine runs perfectly fine and the code isnt persistent when cleared. However, this most recent scan has revealed multiple cylinder misfires. However, upon clearing them they are not persistent and the car runs fine. Thoughts?

How long since plugs and boots were changed?
We dont know
But there is evidence of them being Changed
Some parts of the engine cover are missing
Namely the pins that go over the bolts
However its possible the car is on its original plugs and boots and coils
Its at 107k miles
That’s at least one theory - pull plug number 5 and see how it looks at least. Also; what’s the year make model?
Other suspects include clogged injectors, MAF sensor dirty/faulty, and vacuum leak. Weird that it started with one cylinder and spread, which makes me think ignition or injectors, as a MAF or vacuum leak would have affected them all the same
Its a 2004 BMW E46 325Ci
Hers is on the right and mine is on the left
I was thinking it’s probably a dirty fuel system or the spark plugd
What threw me off is that it works fine like 99% of the time
And then I just get barraged with like 5 error codes, one thing to note is that she left it off for a week because she used her snow car for a week. When her dad started it up it threw the codes. Definitely the longest its sat without being started
And its the first time multiple cylinders misfires
Is there a way fluids couldve reached near the valves like was it parked outside? (Cause u mentioned the covers ware off)
Probably not since it has been garage kept
This is how it sounds when she starts, its like a ticking, but then it goes away. Idk if its related
Nah thats the starter motor. (I think)
U only have misfire on cylinder 5?
Could be, It sounds like a shitty aftermarket starter. My starter sounds different
It used to be exclusively on number five but now 2 and 4
Well some starters before hey go bad do that lemme find a clip
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-PXBjovZDE&t=2m26s not sure but it sounds like this
Demonstration on both a new and old starter so you can see the difference in performance.
Tools you will need
-Jumper Cables
-12V Jumper Wire
-Automotive Battery
-Starter to test
-Bench :)
can you tell the engine codes?
U checked the valves and valve springs yet?
No, and I dont think thats what it would be
Because the car isnt always misfiring
the engine codes are?
Yeah my moped had that too. It misfired a few times in an hour and suddently it died and i towed it to a junkyard
2 and 4 are new
No but again the car would have to be running consistently garbage for that to get the issue
Whats really throwing me off is that idk when it misfires, those lights just appear when the car is running perfectly
Any boost added to the car or anything tuned?
Plugs where changed in 2020
Completely stock, no modifications whatsoever
Okay
It could be a bad fuel pump.
multible people with your vehicle have that issue that the fuelpump just goes bad. Try replacing it or cleaning it
That, is more reasonable
Could also explain the P0442 code, my car has this code too
Fuel pumps u dont have to replace often look if anything is clogging it up. clean it. and if it runs bether nice. Otherwise replace it then (I hope) it will be fixed
I think im gonna start easy and throw in a fuel cleaner
U know u can lift the seats
Then check the coils, then check the fuel pump
It’s difficult on the verts
The pump is blocked by more reinforced and I think it’s relocated slightly
ah okay. I mean i dont have experiance with throwing some wonder material in your fuel tank just saying
Most automotive removal or cleaning fluids are just mythical
But there are some good fuel system cleaners
well lemme know if it worked or not brother!
Will do
and while u are at it u can also replace the fuel filter (its liek a 7 bucks piece) if your pump is clogged your filter mostlikly is too.
