So I was working on my grandfathers car changing the valve cover gasket and saw this belt was a bit cracked. I don’t have any idea what it’s for since there’s a chain for timing assuming it was a timing belt. Any help is appreciated thanks 👍

Belt and chain are probably both for timing. The chain is probably more directly used for a vvt system. Might be wrong though

So the belt is hooked too the crank and the chains are hooked too the cam?

If you look at the picture that @upbeat hull posted is that a timing belt is connected to the crank, tensioner, idle pulley etc. So that there isn’t four cam gears, there are two cam gears with each pair of cams(over a bank of cylinders) connected to each other via the chain.

Ok yes I see now for some reason the belt connecting to the other stuff like tensioner and pulley went over my head for some reason thanks
