Eh there is no peak. Plenty of reliable and terrible engines all generations.

from experience, late 90s was when they went down hill with reliability and simplicity to work on

As Kat said, there really was no high or low
Newer will be more reliable 90% of the time

Id suggest a mk4 instead of a mk5 for example, the engines were just more built for longevity
