Recently got SSL rear springs (lowered springs) into my car, the ride is very stiff and feels like my wheels are hitting the guards every time I go over speed bumps. even tho there’s about a finger and a half clearance between the wheel and the guard. I was thinking about getting my guards rolled or going back to 18’ wheels since I’m running 20’s. Is it normal for the car to seem so stiff? I’ve only ever had 2nd hand springs put into my cars and this set is only about 2 weeks old when I bought it so still 2nd hand but still reasonably new. So main question is, is it meant to be stiff and just waiting for the springs to wear in or, would I need new struts or have my guards rolled etc. Cheers. (Here’s a before and after picture just to see how it sat before getting them on)

Your problem is being cheap and just getting lowering springs. Your oem struts are not meant for that travel play and you will cause extra wear on them over time. They will also destroy your ride quality and damping force resulting in jolts over bumps.

#

Stiff ain’t bad. Stiff coils prevent lowered car’s tires from scraping fenders and provide a better feel.

#

Ur problem as stated before is just buying springs

#

And not a full coil-over pack

#

Swap back on ur oem springs for safety and get a set of coils

if you're going to buy springs, do it right
upgrade the struts and purchase quality springs

#

what do you meaning you sized up to 20".. from the photos your sidewall doesn't look nearly as thin as it should be with a 2" increase in wheel diameter

#

and as Joshy said, if your springs weren't as stiff as they are currently, you'd be bottoming out your suspension and constantly hitting your wheel wells/fenders

@stable junco @visual sapphire I’ve got new new struts coming in, and only put these springs in as a test to see how they’ll fit and only temporarily, and with the sizing up with the rims, stock VE wheels are 18 inches these ones are 20 and are on low profile wheels which is why they seem so thin

visual sapphire
#

The thinner profiled tires probably play a factor in the overall stiffer ride quality

And don’t have that sort of money yet

As I said, only temporary as I’ve bought the struts that are suited to the Springs I have on now

stable junco
#

If u say so, just saying it would be better to do coils

magic gate
#

Yeah I’m aware, just didn’t have the money for them at the time, or there were sets but were missing the tools and top hats

stable junco
#

Tools? Bro dude wtf types of kits u looking at

#

They were missing the adjuster

#

Were u looking at used?

magic gate
#

The things to tighten them

GG @magic gate, you just advanced to level 2! Chat more to level up and earn top roles!

stable junco

Which is why I went with the springs

magic gate
#

?

Dude u need to start saving and then spending. Better imo as it allows u to think for a while if what u are doing to a car is really worth it.

magic gate
#

It’s only a daily, it’s not a car I treat like a weekend car.

#

The stuff I’m doing to this car, I wouldn’t do to my ute

stable junco
#

A daily can still be a nice car? My summer daily is gonna be hella nice. Just telling u, u shouldn’t cheap out on stuff

#

As u will regret it

#

Also as a guy who buys used parts quite a bit, ya it is worth it sometimes. I have saved 2k on my transmission and 1k on my valve and cam covers, but it ain’t always worth it. Especially if the part’s history ain’t always known

magic gate
#

Ikik, all this is just temporary and honestly just wanted to see how it would sit, in the near future I may go with a good set of coil overs or get H&R springs or stick with the king springs. Only time can tell

visual sapphire
#

before opting for coils, i'd save a good amount in order to buy a quality set. more often than most, i'd get a quality spring+strut combination over shitty coilovers that will ride like absolute crap

#

i think they made the right decision, assuming they bought quality springs+struts

#

an example would be a swift spring R-spec, Bilstein B8 struts, and sachs dampers combination over something like Tein or BC coilovers that'll ride terribly

#

so unless you're willing to spend towards something like KW V3s or Ohlins don't worry too much about coilovers

stable junco
#

Silvers and bc are the best

#

Silvers does custom shit too

visual sapphire
#

you'd really compare any of BCs lineup to KW or Ohlins?

#

there's maybe their ZR lineup, apart from that everything rides kinda ass

#

if I was limited to a BC BR coilover budget i'd just opt for Tein flex A's

stable junco
visual sapphire
#

i'm going to have to ask you to come back when you compare the two because they are most definitely night and day

#

BC coils have very poor spring-damping characteristics

too stiff even without maxing out, and they smack the bump stops when softened at any rate

stable junco
#

That is what they were made to be

#

???

visual sapphire
#

you're completely missing the point

stable junco
#

They are performance coils

visual sapphire
#

i was trying to be nice, but clearly that isn't conveying the message

#

BCs are dogshit compared to the two i mentioned

stable junco
#

Bc>tein

stable junco
#

Lmao

visual sapphire
#

ask just about anyone who tracks

#

BCs are of the same quality as Teins, neither being good

#

KWs and Ohlins are renowned in the hobby as being some of the best coilovers you can buy

stable junco
visual sapphire
#

only reason you see BC everywhere is because they're hot-boy spec and cheap

#

they give any other coilovers a shot?

#

an opinion doesn't mean much without anything to compare it to

stable junco
visual sapphire
#

mans comparing Teins to BCs

#

they're BOTH bad

#

i'm talking about KWs and Ohlins

stable junco
stable junco
#

Found ohlins

#

@visual sapphire they are the same price as bcs

#

The ohlins

#

????

visual sapphire
#

cheap doesn't necessarily mean low cost.. it could mean poorly built

visual sapphire
stable junco
visual sapphire
#

they are 2-4k a set

#

BCs are 2k at most, specd out

stable junco
visual sapphire
#

christ those are outdated

stable junco
stable junco
visual sapphire
#

yeah if you're comparing old outdated versions of these, they'll be of equal value to BCs latest shit

stable junco
#

Not even for my exact model

#

Find me ohlins for a er34 and I will buy em

visual sapphire
#

KW V3 are the go-to for those in the market

#

there's a reason some brands don't support certain cars

stable junco
visual sapphire
#

this is why i said some

stable junco
#

My car is a really popular car in Japan too

#

Doesn’t make much sense

visual sapphire
#

could be compatibility with their coilover system, i couldn't tell you i don't make these

visual sapphire
#

one way to find out, google

stable junco
#

But I don’t have a r35 I have a 4 door r34

visual sapphire
#

i realize that, this is why i specifically said not for your car

stable junco
#

I like silvers because they have my car and can make custom coilovers for it
