Some really enjoy overcoming adversity. At first it may seem strange to want to make life harder, but it’s not viewed the same. A video game can never be harder than life, same as its accomplishments can’t hold a candle to big life ones. But this also means that its challenges are not nearly as stressful as genuine life issues. A lot of really good memories are when someone overcame hardship, struggle also bonds people. So what if you took the feeling of struggling through something & the ability to bond with others through a shared challenging experience, you get what these games are to some people.

In the moment it was something they were complaining about yes, but after beating it, it’s something they look fondly back on. A very “I did it” kind of thing. So they get the feeling of overcoming adversity, without it being something serious. Instead of looking at then while they’re struggling, look at their immediate reaction to after they do it. It’s often the look of genuine euphoria.

Like most things, the hardcore way to play was not of ill intent at first. Ds1 had massive magic balance issues, & bosses could not handle being attacked at range. Resulting in a lot easier kills, often first trying fights blind. Although some are toxic about killing something a certain way, others just didn’t want someone to spoil an experience they look back on with such a strong positive emotion. Since if they didn’t struggle, they will not view things the same. It was just a boss fight, not a life experience. And it was what people bonded over. The toxic part came in when people started saying this is how everyone has to go about it.

This feeling of overcoming adversity is so strong. That some people had their depression cured. Just due to feeling more confident in themselves after beating these bosses. And the overall feeling of a challenge being overcomed when they couldn’t just lower the difficulty. Which they would’ve if a setting was there. The reason why the toxic aspect is well, toxic. Is because some also found a lot of joy in beating things with tools. And they achieved the same feeling, just in a prep time kind of way, rather than an in the fight kind of way. Overcoming skill differences with out-of-the-box thinking.

But the internet is different now, a lot of people just look up the meta on YouTube. Which made more & more things become toxic extremes. Some are still clinging to the old days of purist play, even in a game like ER that is genuinely nothing like Ds1 gameplay (Ds1 is 1/4th the speed of ER fights). And some others are Youtube building, steamrolling through the fights, & then not getting the hype behind things. Only struggling enough for it to be mildly annoying, not a memorable moment. Fromsoft games are not the hardest games, this kind of thing happens in other series too, just their approach to difficulty led to a weird fanbase.
