I started running fishtest in little VM's with disk spaces of < 4GB. After running for a few days the workers run out of disk space due to the testing directory ballooning with stuff. Is there a way to disable this/mitigate it so I don't have to keep clearning it out? i could set up a cron job, but that's hacky, I am asking about a nice, clean way to prevent fishtest using too much disk.

running debian 12

fishtest keeps up to 50 Stockfish binaries in testing directory. You can modify the script (games.py) and lower the limit.
