#players in different maps at once?

Okay this one is a bit of a journey.
Setting: 4 player custom game. Survivor health 120%, 0 min/max traitors, base cabin map, otherwise normal settings. One player had just downloaded and started the game for the first time (PC). Two others updated today when they logged in.
It appears that I (host) spawned into the cabin map, and the other 3 people in the lobby spawned into gondola? They couldn't collect resources from what they were seeing, and I could. But they could take the gondola?!
Other things that happened include:
- no animals spawned in the map at all
- there was a player whose HUD showed he was a traitor, and that I was too (as you can see from clips my screen showed survivor)
- when we killed everyone but the "traitor" the game didn't end
- he tried to find animals to die to and said he was on the "edge of the map"
- when, as a ghost, I tried to tab over to him, I would fall through the map every time
Very, very, very funny situation. 10/10 don't change a thing.
So does this mean that the maps are technically client sided, but update for everyone whenever people make interactions?
