This bed occupancy sensor uses force sensitive resistors (FSRs) to detect bed occupancy. It has 2 zones for King/Queen beds and hides neatly under the bed, so it's totally out of sight. It is available for purchase at https://www.elevatedsensors.com/store/p/bed-presence-for-esphome

Extra Long Sensors
These are the longest force sensing resistors (FSR) on the market. They include a full 24" (610mm) of sensing area to make sure each side of your bed is covered. Includes accurate "in bed" detection for any bed with slats. It stays out of the way and conveniently mounts between the mattress and bed slats. The extra long sensors mean that it can easily handle Queen and even King sized beds. Smaller beds can be covered with a single sensor.

No Hardware Calibration
Unique circuit design eliminates the need for hardware calibration! The device produces a pressure reading across the entire range of each pressure sensor. Automated software calibration helps you set the correct pressure threshold with ease. Every person and bed is unique and this sensor adjusts to you and your bed. No more fixed resistor calculations.

Plug & Play with ESPHome
It’s Made for ESPHome and comes preloaded with ESPHome, so it's ready for you whether you're a smart home novice or a coding veteran. Set it and forget it, or tinker and modify it. No YAML experience required.

Endless Automation Potential

  • Arm/disarm security system
  • Turn off all lights
  • Adjust thermostat schedule
  • Morning announcements
  • Enable pathway lighting for midnight bathroom breaks

I bought these, and they work 🙂
Don't know what to automate on exactly just yet, but I will find something.
The most painful part was lifting my heavy mattress up 🤣

maybe while you are not at home and both sides of your bed are occupied, then something is wrong PartyBoy

I had been thinking about using something like this to automatically turn on some very dim lights if I get up at night. I feel like there would be fewer false positives than IR or MM presence sensors

I replaced my DIY FSR sensors with these. They work great.

This would be great if my bed had slats. I just use one of these thin film force sensors https://amzn.to/4exvs2L and a 39 k ohm resistor to act as a simple voltage devider. Just place it between box springs and matress. Use it to start/stop my night time routines.

Though you might have to rig up something to stop the sensor plugs from pulling off the header pins.

They come with short dupont cables for mounting the box under slats that are too close together. You could make up some longer dupont cables and have it beside your bed.

for the price difference, i'd rather just buy a 24 inch force sensor for $15 lol

You do you.

yep i save money there about 3 times less 🙂

The thickness on top of the slat is less than 5mm. I would be impressed if someone could feel that through their mattress, but I'm always open to feedback. I'll take the note that even lower profile would be better.

If you have the skills to acquire parts for a dual sensor setup, wire/solder them up, package it up, program it and troubleshoot it for less than $25 (about 3 times less than $69.99), then more power to you. For those that either can't (or want to do other things with their time), I hope they consider this. In all honesty, I would love to bring the price down. If I'm able to start selling in larger quantities, that could reflect in pricing in the future.

Gives me automation ideas at least being that I live alone

#

So long as it doesn't detect the cat XD

So what you're saying is itll initially calibrate to me and then when the cat comes for her evening cuddle, automatically accuse me of having gotten fat

You could use that to have a daily weight trend 🤔

You hit a button in HA when you are on the bed, and a button in HA when you are not on the bed

calibration done

Can just use the atteuation: auto setting. Then it self calabrates. I use a 39 k resistor for all by beds and don't have to calibrate for them. 4 different beds with people ranging from full size adults to small kids.

  - platform: adc
    pin: 3
    name: "Bed Occupancy Sensor"
    attenuation: auto
    update_interval: 500ms
#

Note
In our tests, the usable ADC range was from ~0.075V to ~3.12V (with the attenuation: auto setting), and anything outside that range capped out at either end. Even though the measurements are calibrated, the range limits are variable among chips due to differences in the internal voltage reference.

#

on my esp32 D1 mini's it capped at 3.12

#

on my esp32c3's it capped out at 2.85

That's a functuin of the code, not the hardware

I don't think anyone is proposing hardware for it. Jesse said "You hit a button in HA when you are on the bed, and a button in HA when you are not on the bed"

I might consider getting these for my kids’s beds. My son, especially, climbs out of his bed at night and sleeps on the floor. Winter is coming in the northern hemisphere so it would be good to know if I need to make sure he’s sleeping in a warm bed and not on the cold floor.

hey @tribal flame great job, looks interesting but I have a different use case in mind... what would be the precision of the sensor to measure let's say weight in Kg?
And how flexible/fiddly/delicate are the strips?

Should still be accurate enough to recognize the difference between a person on the bed vs a cat or a pile of laundry

#

Just don't have the right use case for something like it.... yet
