Let this stand as the discussion forum for a mod concept. The idea here is a LARGE scale community project (should it take off), that aims to substantially expand some story, slightly tangentially to vanilla game.
I had this idea while chatting with a friend and with Koder. This would provide new story, not directly in line with the existing story arc, dialogue, equipment, research and tech tree mechanics, and provide an incentive for some players to futher interact with those dang pesky goofballs we so lovingly call: 'Dorito'.

Upon bringing back the FIRST core in a save, a pop-up or notification alerts the player that a 'New system is unlocked: Tech Tree', along with associated new tab in the E' menu tree. Players can then interact with the Tech Tree, and see that there are a number of neat new technologies to unlock. These will cost research points. Discussion can be had on how to handle these points, I think a 1:1 points for SC is a bit boring.

Completing various research items will provide players with new lore, story, and/or equipment. Perhaps some of this could be 'slots'? Maybe an upgrade system that directly affects existing equipment stats? Some notable standalone equipment should exist, and will be included below>
