I found one post here that suggested something similar, but not quite the same, so I figured I'd make this its own thread. I think it'd be really useful if LIDAR could keep tabs on where those fast-moving ore chunks run off to (at least up to the LIDAR's max range). I know I could just watch and see where the corresponding dot goes, but if I take my eye off it for a split second I don't remember which dot it was.
I know it wouldn't make sense for LIDAR to know exactly what object it's seeing (aside from ships apparently, even without transponders), but if I can tell each sweep which dots are the same object other dots were in previous sweeps, then what about my crew? Could happen from the geologist window. Selecting something in visual range gives it a label, and then it keeps that label even outside visual range as long as LIDAR can still see it every consecutive sweep. Tracking would be lost as soon as something gets between you and the object, or it goes out of range, because even if it becomes visible again the geologist has no way to know for certain that it's the same object as before.
