The Union Science Bureau is a relatively recent institution, with Far Field Teams only being formalized during the First Expansion.

But long before the mechanized chassis, before hard suits, before Union’s bureaucracy had a name for it — the Ranger already existed.

This Far Field themed homebrew is aimed to be a series of narrative plot lines that can be used as one shots, prequels to first party content, or jumping off points for your own narratives.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”– Margaret Mead

Rangers and Lancers

Just like Lancer, the title Ranger is not a formal rank.

There is no academy that grants it, no license that confers it, and no authority that decides who deserves it. There are two schools of thought about its origin. The general consensus is that the word began as a nickname used for the crews of the Ranger-class ships that carried Far-Field teams into the unknown. Alternatively, some suggest that the naming convention of the exploration vessels themselves was in honor of those that went to where the maps ended and came back with answers.

Either way, “Ranger” is a reputation.

Some claim the title themselves. Others earn it after years spent beyond the frontier, their names carried back by survey reports, data logs, and the stories of the people they helped... or those they couldn’t. A Ranger might be a scientist, a scout, a diplomat, a mechanic, or something else entirely.

What matters is not the title.

What matters is the work.
