how Golden Parry works is it basically sweeps a field of parrying across your body in a raycast

your aim is to slap the opponent's active sword hitbox with that field

Golden Parry gives you HUGE lenience because the parry field is wayyyy bigger than normal parries, to the point that you can deflect attacks that would never have come close to hitting you

the other parrying skill, Carian Retaliation, is a huge sphere of parry field instead of a moving ray

it lasts the same amount of time and also the parrying sphere eats spells

so it's a big fat sphere right in front of you that lasts for a while

this is the setup i used, now notably you don't need to be this high of a level, it works with lower levels too, you just need to meet all the weapon and incant stat reqs, get some decent endurance, and put as many points into arcane as you can. for an easier version you can ignore the spells and extra weapons completely and just focus on the talismans, armor and physick as well as the shield and main weapon

minimum stats you need for just the main weapon and shield are 49 str and 12 dex basically since this is focused mostly on arcane as a damage stat

So I wouldn't say he ran away there, he just returned to his throne, albeit in a very shitty state
