Finally got the Marut off the painting table. Hoping to get her on the game table this weekend.

Realizing I had the space to write that on the front of legendary rat mech quickdraw had me giggling for a day

You either die an Atlas or live to be a quickdraw.

#

Or...you live to be an Urbie.

#

But you gotta do a lot of fucked shit to be that way.

attemptin to make my wardogs more biomechanical, at first it was going to be an entire arm reaching out gripping the head far in front of it but for this one at least a friend advised i chop it down, i kind of fucked up the legs by mistake so next step is adding wings above and underneath like a flying cacodemon meatball

weak hornet
#

That's a funny mental image

gonna watch this later to learn how to use these

languid jay
#

Oh sponging is a really efficient way of laying down paint if you don't have an airbrush.

#

It's also great for getting a stone look.

weak hornet
#

That's pretty neat

#

Oh.

#

Idea

#

sponge priming.

#

Probably need to buy a couple more sponges later.

languid jay
#

You don't really need to do sponge priming, just lay down whatever is your base coat and sponge from there.

weak hornet
#

Oh no, I meant priming with a sponge.

#

Like I got some bottles of Vallejo primer and I want to see how that would go instead of using a mop brush.

languid jay
#

Vallejo primer self-levels so I don't know that it would work out better than just laying it on with a brush/airbrush.

#

You generally want a thin even coat and sponging...doesn't do that, hah.

done the rough base of my slaanesh karnivores, i need to clean up a bit and try some techniques like drybrushing and highlighting but so far i like them

slaanesh is my favey and i think if i expand i want a slaanesh themed army but its kind of samey after painting loads of EC to do a traditional pink slaanesh scheme... i might try another god dog next, maybe tzeentch, but i need to find more bits... all i can think of is kitbashing a double-bird head with the extra i have and more mutant bits slapped on everywhere but gluing the kitbash wings onto the meatball chassis was agony

#

also i might finally start basing considering theres so much space to use with spare bits, i dont really have any technicals to use to make ground like mud or snow, but i think spare maulerfiend/knight guns and corpse pieces would be pretty

ordered sum streaking grime and oil paints (the abteliung vehicle weathering pack), i know some people apply it on normally and others cake it on and then remove it out of everywhere but the recesses with white spirit swabs, i think the process is base with acrylics, and then instead of acrylic washes and highlighting you use the grime as a wash and you use the oils either kind of as a wash via the swabs or do manuakl highlighting? we'll give it a go

languid jay
#

It depends on what you're going for but for me oils are usually used as both a wash and a filter. I'll paint the model normally and even a couple highlights, then do the oil wash and then remove it from the raised surfaces--but only so much. The wash will darken the colors and blend the layers in to a smoother degree, thus the filter.

#

If I'm going oil streaks I'm adding a streak or dab of straight oil paint then use the mineral spirits on it and pull downwards to thin it out and look more natural.

keen gulch
#

thank you, i'll try some pin highlights as well first!

languid jay
#

Consider if you're doing pin highlights and pin recessing to add gloss varnish to the model first. This makes it smooth and helps with capilary action--the wash will sink into the recesses very easily that way and with minimal cleanup after.

#

Most other methods you don't need to varnish the model beforehand. I've slopped on oil washes only a couple hours after painting a model without varnishing first and there's been no issue; oil doesn't interact with acrylics (usually anyway) so it's safe to skip the varnish if you're not going for the above recess work.

keen gulch
#

oh yes, should i wait a few hours before using oil? i know you need to wait for it to be 100% absolutely dry and covered before you do it? i will look into varnishes, i think i have some from charcoal drawing

languid jay
#

I wait about 2 hours or so before using an oil wash, more out of an abundance of caution than any scientific reason. How fast arcylics dry depend on the layers and ambient humidity but the 2-hour mark is usually fine in my experience.

#

For cleaning up oil washes you can remove it almost immediately after applying or waiting overnight. I usually do it right after and then let it dry overnight/the whole day, depending on what time I'm doing it. If you want a really grimy look then apply the washes and wait overnight/a day then remove it.

keen gulch
#

oooh i never thought about waiting before the removal step

languid jay
#

Basically the longer the oils wait the dirtier it will look. Just don't let it sit for like 3 days.

I'm never priming with white again...

regal inlet
regal inlet

Because what I recommend is Vajello grey primer

#

It's very easy to go from that to off white

native vector
#

Army Painter white rattle can. I primed most of these guys in their light gray, but I wanted white for the panels so that they'd be more vibrant...but the white just came out chalky and textured and it's low-key tearing up my brushes trying to paint it

regal inlet
#

Yeah whites do that.

#

Only tricks I've heard for white is to put it in a bath of warm water for 20 mins before use.

#

And shake it a lot

native vector
#

my coworker who also does 40K said he's heard that the best trick is to just prime black or light gray first, so with my future knights I think I'll just do my light gray and then do a white base on the panels that I want to be brighter as opposed to painting straight over gray

is that an Old World one? I'm not as familiar with OG Fantasy as I am Age of Sigmar

lunar axle

It was originally, I think. I've just had this thing for nearly ten years, from back when I first got into AoS. Haven't done anything with Warhammer for years, since.

I technically bought it for Age of Sigmas. Finecast stuff. But the entire range at that point was just ported over from OG Fantasy, I think.

In terms of ways for my airbrush to have a part break, I was not expecting the threaded part of the nozzle to break off leaving a piece in the larger part of the airbrush. Fortunately I could extract the broken piece and have some extra nozzles, but it was pretty confusing
