#Miniature painting 🎨

I've been messing around with a lot of pink lately
Scion more specifically!
I have officially embarked on a very ill-advised painting project

Finally got the Marut off the painting table. Hoping to get her on the game table this weekend.
The Menace Pirates gave me a paint scheme idea
“I’m HIM, I been HIM, I will forever be HIM”
Realizing I had the space to write that on the front of legendary rat mech quickdraw had me giggling for a day
You either die an Atlas or live to be a quickdraw.
Or...you live to be an Urbie.
But you gotta do a lot of fucked shit to be that way.
Like throwing Solari matches
One day, a mad MechTech will point all 4 ML AND the SRM4 forwards, and it'll be the end of the universe.
Ah, so, a human version of Orkimedes.
It would legitimately be good! Not like, better than usable but thats a lot of damage to vomit out at point blank on a 5/8/5 mech!
But no! Two fucking lasers have to point backwards UP MY ASS or the inner sphere explodes
We sure do have a lot of Aleph in Pnet.. I wonder why that could be
attemptin to make my wardogs more biomechanical, at first it was going to be an entire arm reaching out gripping the head far in front of it but for this one at least a friend advised i chop it down, i kind of fucked up the legs by mistake so next step is adding wings above and underneath like a flying cacodemon meatball
That's a funny mental image
I got inspired by Medders' Miniatures to try using a makeup sponge for the "slap-chop" technique - and I learned some interesting things.
Vince Venturella and I made another game! Check out Deth Wizards - miniatures-agnostic necromantic skirmish combat at http://www.dethwizardsgame.com

gonna watch this later to learn how to use these
Oh sponging is a really efficient way of laying down paint if you don't have an airbrush.
It's also great for getting a stone look.
That's pretty neat
Oh.
Idea
sponge priming.
Probably need to buy a couple more sponges later.
You don't really need to do sponge priming, just lay down whatever is your base coat and sponge from there.
Oh no, I meant priming with a sponge.
Like I got some bottles of Vallejo primer and I want to see how that would go instead of using a mop brush.
Vallejo primer self-levels so I don't know that it would work out better than just laying it on with a brush/airbrush.
You generally want a thin even coat and sponging...doesn't do that, hah.
True
This needs to stop

I swear in five years, mini painters are either going to be fully trained beauty techs or tired, angry trades people.
Okay the power drill thing is kind of ingenius for painting a lot of terrain or really big ones because drybrushing that shit can get tiring.
Granted, holding a giant drill can also be tiring depending on the weight but it'll certainly save wear and tear on your wrists.
Biggie timbs
first battletech goobers
wish we were as good as you
done the rough base of my slaanesh karnivores, i need to clean up a bit and try some techniques like drybrushing and highlighting but so far i like them
slaanesh is my favey and i think if i expand i want a slaanesh themed army but its kind of samey after painting loads of EC to do a traditional pink slaanesh scheme... i might try another god dog next, maybe tzeentch, but i need to find more bits... all i can think of is kitbashing a double-bird head with the extra i have and more mutant bits slapped on everywhere but gluing the kitbash wings onto the meatball chassis was agony
also i might finally start basing considering theres so much space to use with spare bits, i dont really have any technicals to use to make ground like mud or snow, but i think spare maulerfiend/knight guns and corpse pieces would be pretty
Just finished up our chaos lord who's actually kinda just a stormcast lord terminos with a head swap lol
So, one of my local LGS'es has a bunch of Vallejo True Metal.
Is it worth it to get some or is it a fad?
learnig to base, i was curious if the transfers would work but i guess on texture the answer is no lol i might peel it off
i think i need to sieve the sand so it doesnt come out so big and clumpy and patchy? then when it dries i will paint it dawnstone or something grey or blacker
Finished painting this last night.
Saving building my prussians for when I need a serious emergency dopamine hit
They look so cool
Genuinely very satifying to click together too, I think I had trouble with a single weapon and that’s it
Got the last three done now
I'm liking how this one's turning out, both looking forward to and dreading working on the base
Interesting! I have a Vampire Lord that's just kinda actually a Stormcast Lord Terminos with a headswap and a Skeletal arm holding a glaive in the off hand! Same brain!
purple slaanesh is fun, i put some sand on the base and coloured it but i think i need some more bitz for these huge bases, i might use some spare dog heads or see if i can find a tuft/skull pack
Working one some freehands.
Painting has begun again..
I think it's our first time in 4(?) years
Plenty of 3d prints to learn with, at least
I need to get a printer because I want those war suits
New war paints!!!!!!!

Quick paintjob, just in time for display at an event today.
I need to get more of AP's historical sets.
In this video, I'll show you how historical paints can be effectively used for non-historical miniatures, specifically sci-fi soldiers.

Vince Venturella and I made a space survival game!...
Also, Wargames Atlantic new team for their skirmish game has good heads for Zona Alfa.
fairly happy with the orange
maybe a bit too busy
ah fuck i forgot to pinpoint the eyes
ooo
playing Heresy scares me a bit but I do admit, that line has the sickest Dreadnoughts and vehicles
Yeah! The heresy dreads and vehicles are beautiful
Especially the custodes stuff.
Eventually I will be getting 2 more of these lads
ordered sum streaking grime and oil paints (the abteliung vehicle weathering pack), i know some people apply it on normally and others cake it on and then remove it out of everywhere but the recesses with white spirit swabs, i think the process is base with acrylics, and then instead of acrylic washes and highlighting you use the grime as a wash and you use the oils either kind of as a wash via the swabs or do manuakl highlighting? we'll give it a go
It depends on what you're going for but for me oils are usually used as both a wash and a filter. I'll paint the model normally and even a couple highlights, then do the oil wash and then remove it from the raised surfaces--but only so much. The wash will darken the colors and blend the layers in to a smoother degree, thus the filter.
If I'm going oil streaks I'm adding a streak or dab of straight oil paint then use the mineral spirits on it and pull downwards to thin it out and look more natural.
thank you, i'll try some pin highlights as well first!
Consider if you're doing pin highlights and pin recessing to add gloss varnish to the model first. This makes it smooth and helps with capilary action--the wash will sink into the recesses very easily that way and with minimal cleanup after.
Most other methods you don't need to varnish the model beforehand. I've slopped on oil washes only a couple hours after painting a model without varnishing first and there's been no issue; oil doesn't interact with acrylics (usually anyway) so it's safe to skip the varnish if you're not going for the above recess work.
oh yes, should i wait a few hours before using oil? i know you need to wait for it to be 100% absolutely dry and covered before you do it? i will look into varnishes, i think i have some from charcoal drawing
I wait about 2 hours or so before using an oil wash, more out of an abundance of caution than any scientific reason. How fast arcylics dry depend on the layers and ambient humidity but the 2-hour mark is usually fine in my experience.
For cleaning up oil washes you can remove it almost immediately after applying or waiting overnight. I usually do it right after and then let it dry overnight/the whole day, depending on what time I'm doing it. If you want a really grimy look then apply the washes and wait overnight/a day then remove it.
oooh i never thought about waiting before the removal step
Basically the longer the oils wait the dirtier it will look. Just don't let it sit for like 3 days.
tyty, i should an attempt to show off in like a week
starter box all done
wish I had a dedicated painting space but I dont have room for it in my apartment. one day!
those flowers are gorgeous! did you buy em or make em yourself
Ahhh good ol' army painter
Yeah
That's where I get the majority of my stuff.
But I might start getting some Gamer Grass later.
Cant wait until the 3rd Aces box drops and gives us a ton of capellan mechs I can make a canopus force out of
I love their hand-me-down vibes, like a sort of eastern bloc military
Finally painted a moonstone yayy
my first attempt with the oils, i know its just to taste but kts pretty hard to know how much to remove, im vaguely trying to clean the top of forms and not their recesses and shadows but im a bit clueless still lol
i love the look of oils though even at this baby attempt, next i guess is adding my own highlights to the shadows?
hehe thanks, cant wait to use it on my kitbash fleshy mutant war dog
ooo, Knights
oh that reminds me, I've been meaning to post my Imperial Knight WIPs in here, lol
this is from a couple of weeks ago. I've not made much progress since, tbh
I'm never priming with white again...
Which white?
Because what I recommend is Vajello grey primer
It's very easy to go from that to off white
Army Painter white rattle can. I primed most of these guys in their light gray, but I wanted white for the panels so that they'd be more vibrant...but the white just came out chalky and textured and it's low-key tearing up my brushes trying to paint it
Yeah whites do that.
Only tricks I've heard for white is to put it in a bath of warm water for 20 mins before use.
And shake it a lot
my coworker who also does 40K said he's heard that the best trick is to just prime black or light gray first, so with my future knights I think I'll just do my light gray and then do a white base on the panels that I want to be brighter as opposed to painting straight over gray
Yeah shake the everliving fuck out of white primer
army painter cans aren't great. use vallejo, citadel, or pro acryl's. those all come out smooth for me just shaking the cans normally
noted
If you can't airbush or spray
get Vallejo's surface primer
it works pretty good as a brush on
finished my destroyers
Yeah this^ I have the surface primer, it's designed for an Airbrush but is so smooth done by hand.
*I've done 2 knights that way
Keeping the trend going of repainting my old warhammer.
Ooh nice
That’s one good undead magic frog
…or maybe still dead, but so powerful that’s only a mild inconvenience
ooo, lizard frog!
is that an Old World one? I'm not as familiar with OG Fantasy as I am Age of Sigmar
It was originally, I think. I've just had this thing for nearly ten years, from back when I first got into AoS. Haven't done anything with Warhammer for years, since.
I technically bought it for Age of Sigmas. Finecast stuff. But the entire range at that point was just ported over from OG Fantasy, I think.
Yeah, its the original Lord Kroak if Im not mistaken
Got his aos refresh relatively early I think but there was a period before that
Relatively early? Second edition, I guess that might be early. That's past when I stopped having an interest in the game, so you might well be right.
2021 release, I think.
It was just before 3e which is later than I thought
Was before the big seraphon refresh n stuff though
vintage lizard...
Some merc shawks
i need to clean up the herald a lot, i got overexcited and oiled it before it was done lol so i'll need to fix up the acrylic especially around the butt and do another coat of oil, but even messy models look cool with oil
the dog is hard to mottle and vary, i tried adding some fulgrim pink around the stretched skin for interest but its very very hard to see
thankssss, the next dog has more pockmarks and peeled skin so im hoping it will be easier to figure out where to texture and stuff
Alright, we're going shiny.
It's the beetle bandits
Zeon. Gonna rebase them when the new hex bases come out
man, I wish BT had some of these dynamic poses. Lots of fun!
I think this is the single best individual model ive painted. and im getting faster too. 4.5 hours from a black primed character model to painted based and varnished ☺️
thats 500 points all done. not the greatest 500 points list probably but its playable!
😌
realizing as I'm trying to put the foot and leg panels on my Knight Armigers that I somehow glued on a foot backwards and hearing the saxophones grow louder...
to be clear: it's not 'slightly out of alignment', it's a full 180 degrees from what's intended and past me somehow just. didn't catch that
one of those skorpekh destroyers in the photo i posted had its legs glued on backwards so I chopped its spine in half, sanded it down, and glued it back together hahaha
which means I can't attach one set of foot armor that I spend all today painting aaaaaAAAAAAAAAA

kudos to your surgery skills, bcus I can't tell from that photo which one it was
2nd from the right. you can see the torso has a gap
oh yeah, between the front and back of the torso
didnt come together 100% but as I always tell myself when I fuck up a mini: no one knows except me.
I knew I should've grabbed a hobby knife last time I was at my LGS
taking a look at this and. of course of all the parts I could've screwed up on it was the ball-in-socket joint where you glue the ball nice and snugly into the socket
like. how the hell am I going to separate this in order to glue it back on properly
now I'm glad I didn't get to painting the feet yet, though
goated
The wildflowers n knives are great contrast
Good work on the rendering on the legs
Thanks 🥰
In terms of ways for my airbrush to have a part break, I was not expecting the threaded part of the nozzle to break off leaving a piece in the larger part of the airbrush. Fortunately I could extract the broken piece and have some extra nozzles, but it was pretty confusing
When did it happen?
I don't know. I only found out after I took it apart to clean it and noticed the rubber gasket normally on the nozzle was not on it
But possibly between when I last used it and when I used it today
Huh, only times I've had that happen was when I tightened it a bit too hard accidentally
Maybe I did that the previous time I cleaned it
my models frosted 😬 does the olive oil thing work or am I better off doing a coat of glossy varnish
Probably better off doing gloss.
gotcha ty!
This red coat looks amazing. But non-water based paints scare me: https://youtu.be/iVvC3OOPqzw?si=8GEzNHgQAXMFDPym
(Though, I'm willing to use rattle cans and have a fume hood, so maybe that's a bit irrational on my part)
