#The use of forum channels - how I see them being used in servers

Forums channels, added a few months ago to discord, have shown a few good uses. I’m personally quite a fan of them when properly used and moderated. A lot of communities seem to not fully understand their power yet, but once you have a good setup they can make certain channel significantly less chaotic.

The types of channels that I see are easily replaced by forums channels are channels in which multiple individual chats/discussions take place. These are channels like help/support channels, but also suggestions/feedback channels or even bug/issue report channels.

One can also use them for some kind of listing, like recipes or images. The thread then is used for reactions/comments on what the OP made. However this tends to make the channel feel less “alive” and “welcoming”. It definitely helps with organization but has some significant downsides for such channels. I don’t see forum channels replacing such listing channels very soon.

This server, being mainly focused around support and help, can greatly benefit from forum channels as an alternative option to the regular support channels. However some reorganization will be needed. A good step might be merging all the different modpack channels to 1 forum channel, which has tags for each modpack and requiring you to add one tag to a post.

This is what I think of forum channels in discord. They have their purposes and goals, and can be integrated well in some servers, depending on the goals of said server.

tl;dr: seb wants forum channels for #tech-help and #suggestions

and also the Official Modpack Chat category

#

and honestly, I think this server is fine the way it is, for now

It's generally how i see these forum channels being most used/how to use their functionality correctly. Forums have many issues that honestly can't be ignored, most of these are related to moderating/managing them. They're really not easy to navigate at times and some behaviour can be unexpected/unintuitive

#

so honestly if it wasn't used it wouldn't bother me at all

Honestly I think the solution atleast for the support channels is to just make better use of threads

#

That way each individual issue gets its own thread, and it doesn't require much extra effort if you just give the people who are knowledgeable and actively help out in those channels the perms to make threads

threads are even worse for discoverability

True but when people have 1 off little issues or when they've tried all the regular instructions and we have to dig deeper its better than clogging up the place while others are trying to get help
