And then there's an approach of telling the engine to draw a different texture file onto the said model.

So, let me get this straight with my limited knowledge. If one makes a layered model, there have to be made a separate "dupe" part of the model with a different texture that on command can be swapped with the original part of the model.

Source, for example, allows to embed "bodygroups" in the model.

Where a certain part can have multiple variations, all of which can be switched through code.

Rigging is sommething that is unique to every engine-game-yourmodel-basemodel combination.

you rip ai-chan's model
you may or may not get its rig when ripping
you then choose your target engine, game and model you're going to replace or base your work upon
if you got the rig previously, you convert it to the one your target model uses
if you didn't, you rig and weight paint the new model to match the target one

you will only be able to use her original animations if you preserve the original rig

Okay, so I did look up rigging tutorial on YT, but, again, rigs are bound to vertex, but if I use newly rigged model to replace or work as a custom model for say playable character in gmod, does the animation data carry over?

animations only move the bones

they will only work if the rig they're landing on is exactly the same as the one used to compile them originally
