there's a certain production synergy, so I can speculate:
As I understand it, animation these days is often 3D skeletons + 2D rendering, with mo-cap for fancy facial expressions and fight-scenes.
So, that's a lot of canned assets that you want to test out and make sure look/feel good from different angles, anyway. That's half your game-dev, right there.
So, ship the files back to the filmmakers to put things in a canned, scripted order with the fancy renderer for the movie.
And send the files to a Unity gremlin to make a basic hack n slash or whatever. Or a turn-based RPG with attack animations lifted directly from the movie.
