Could be used as an alternative if the golem waits a couple sec before shooting

I think that's still the case in normal play, he doesn't fair as well as someone like Huntress, Commando and Artificer with proc based items. He has no dash. He has no major defensive CD and his stuns can be blocked.

so if he's going to miss the gap he can roll and it'll halt his movement and push him over it
