Dedicated servers are generally used to host the game on another machine, so you have extra resources to properly play the game.

I think it has to do with how long you can keep a server connection active in Steam, versus having a Dedicated application that can be upkept w/o reset.

The Steam server browser shows all the servers you can connect to. Using the in-game multiplayer uses the Steam servers to host your party's game. Using a dedicated server, the server browser is simply a shortcut to join that server. A dedicated server only relies on Steam so others can easily find it.

hopoo: I've been messaging in a lot of places, but maybe it got lost. To reiterate - we're definitely trying to figure it out. What's happening is that Steam servers have been intermittently turning off and on, and we use steam to handle our hosting. When steam flickers off for a second, our game loses connection and drops. You can tell its happening because your steam friends list is flickering. What we're hoping for is that it's just some temporary DDOS of steam services, or an overload from the steam sales. As far as we're aware, we haven't changed anything at all on our end that causes this to start happening. I totally understand the frustrations - it's super frustrating for us too - and we'll figure out some workaround if it seems to persist. It's especially bad timing because a lot of people were gone for the holidays, so we're behind the curve on this particular issue.

the in-game multiplayer that involves copy/pasting ID's or inviting steam friends does not use your system to host a server at all. That server is hosted in Steam, and thus doesn't rely on your ports being opened or closed

A dedicated server should be no different than a player hosting a lobby and playing on it. It'll still connect to steam for heartbeats, status, info, and whatever else you can think of.

As for Factorio, fairly sure hosting those dedicated servers also requires port forwarding, but obviously directly connecting to someone hosting the game as they're playing it does not, due to the same steam service.

Could be that something's broken and it's doing it even at lower temperatures. At least, that's the only thing I can think of when something keeps happening more frequently. It also fits you reinstalling the game, because it means it'll cool down in the meanwhile.

Just type Event Viewer in your windows thingy.

Then go to Windows Logs > Application. From there you'll have to try and find the exact time your PC rebooted, and see what the last error message was.

A driver communicates between your system and your GPU, so either the driver is faulty and is messing up communication, or the driver is getting weird messages from your GPU because that's messing up.

If you do end up reinstalling the driver, I'd suggest using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller). It'll get rid of anything that possibly caused the error in the first place.

You can set a player limit in the server config. I'm not actually 100% sure on how it works, especially seeing there's a mod out there that allows for more players.

For those wondering, from my experience with friends we were able to complete several runs on a Dedicated Server w/o blackouts, but I have Heartbeating set to 0 as I don't want the server IP to be advertised on Steam.

Didn't realize this was a channel, whoops, so my game has been wigging out really bad, firstly my game will freeze up when performance goes above a simmer, for seconds at a time, I believe this to be my fps dropping to sub 1 fps.

I uninstalled and reinstalled it and after which I lost all audio?

So I decided to go and look at my audio setting all of which are normal so I moved on of the values and I froze like I did mid game, but for even longer, maybe 3 seconds, this occurring anytime I moved the slider.

I tried just playing a game, to which I flat out crashed when fighting the Grovetender on stage 3, the game after this when I was testing my performance had minor freezes (maybe half second freezes when there were to many lumerian fireballs and such) then I fought the beetle queen and ran into freezes when it did just about anything

Been getting this crash about 5 minutes every time into every run. No idea what's wrong, I've updated BIOS, Updated graphics drivers, made sure all my RAM is working etc. It's a new PC, but this is the ONLY game crashing.

Well...it looks like me and many others are having multiplayer issues. Can't join a lobby with my friends, can't join quick play, etc.
I have no mods installed, and i've already tried to re-install the game.
Sometimes the game decides to work, sometimes, it doesnt.
It has been like this for over a week or so. If you could take a look at this @mild ridge , i would apreciate it ❤️

RoR keeps crashing my pc, im not getting a blue screen, it just shuts off like when you pull the plug out of the wall. I contacted customer support and they told me to also aks in the discord, so here i am. I updated all my drivers and stuff and pretty much every piece of sofware that even comes close to this game

Hey all I just entered the Null Portal on a pretty long run and game appears to be stuck - went to a black screen and wouldn't load the level. Pause menu works but as soon as I hit "resume" it freezes on the pause menu. Any fix? Is my run just gone? :C

Is there anyway to set the playercontrollerid to anything in game? I noticed that in the console whenever I or my friends try to join a multiplayer game it is assigning us the same playercontrollerid which is giving an error and not allowing either myself or them to join.

I have a GTX 1080 FTW and I used to get 144 FPS+ in the main menu, but now I only get about 105 FPS max. If I turn on Vsync I get a constant 74 FPS and Vsync (half) gets me 48 FPS. Also, I am limited in-game with the same FPS issue. My GPU is running at 90% usage, so I'm not too sure why it's having problems.

Edit: Reseated my GPU's PCIE slot and it seems to get me 144 FPS now again with 60% - 70% GPU usage instead of 90%

Many people have been crashing recently, submit an official support ticket to Gearbox.
In the future, I would not recommend posting that you only bought the game because of an error. It's illegal for one, and it doesn't give the financial support that the dev's deserve.

Hi there. Not sure where to post this exactly. I use Right-Click to move forward. Thanks for adding the capability to remap this as it wasn't in the initial release. However, when I map forward to Right-Click, it immediately unbinds my Backwards button. There's no conflict there, so I'm not sure why the game wouldn't allow that. Any insight into this would be appreciated.

got an issue with 1 of my friends, when we play with 3 or more people on my dedicated server he black screens after portal and then disconnects with nothing in the server logs about it. this only happens when there are more than 2 of us and its only that specific guy that has the issue and doesn't have this issue when we play without the server aka p2p. tried to do some digging online to see if anyone elts has this issue but the only results i can see are people being black screened from p2p with dedicated being the fix ( the opposite of what is happening ) and we kinda need the server for when there are more than 4 of us. any pointers as to what this could be would be great.

2. it happens normally on long runs, normally spanning 20+ stages before crashing.

eh, nah not with the build i have. I have played multiple levels at stage 36 and never had an issue. Im sure both of my geforce 2080's can handle the graphics as well as the alienware motherboard and 16 gb of ram that i am running. Sorry but this isnt a solution. @robust panther unfortunately this is an issue with how the game and steam's lobby infrastructure interact. Losing connection to Steam will end the game because the lobby is lost. The lobbies Steam provides to us seem to lately be dropping more frequently for some reason we haven't been able to identify. We'll be making an effort to make the game handle the lobby drops better but it looks like it's unfortunately going to have to wait until the next update.

@dusk grove there doesn't seem to be a proper fix but sometimes just doing the regular uninstall and reinstall can sometimes fix it

@dusk grove but there's also the issue of the steam servers crashing and your game kicking everyone out. Your best option is to probably run a dedicated server and see if that fixes it.

Hey, I found what my problem with the mouse lag was.
The game was using the wrong GPU. I have a built-in Intel GPU, and the game was using that one.

I fixed it by plugging my monitor into my GTX card rather than the CPU (havn't had to do that on other computer's I've owned, probably because they havn't had a built-in graphics card before) and then switched prefered GPU in the Nvidia control panel.

@pastel lantern if its going on only in game, and not on descktop then goto: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Risk of Rain 2\Risk of Rain 2_Data\Config and find config.cfg file. open it with text redactor and find lines 18 and 19:
window_mode Fullscreen; resolution 1280x1024x75;
Replace it with your monitor resolution and windowed mode. Save file and run the game.

I'm not sure if the prismatic trials are supposed to be identical across all platforms, but for Playstation & PC, they aren't. There is a gamer that makes guides for Mercenary's Prismatic Trial Challenge & goes through the most efficient way to complete the trial to unlock Merc's secondary skill every time the Prismatic Trial resets. My issue is that, while the map rotation & most chest (not all) spawn locations stay the same, the items that come from those chests are not the same. It basically makes following the guide useless. I thought the PT’s were the same across all platforms but if not, i'll keep praying to the RNG gods

If you have a price range I could give you hardware suggestions.
The hard part about this game is that past stage 20 based on enemy counts, the game will bring every PC to it's knees. Also, the game maxes at 120fps not 144
Just from personal experience I would suggest an AMD 3rd gen Ryzen and an AMD 5700xt

was able to join a friend, got disconnected due to network bs. tried joining a new lobby and get the cannot pick characters (even though i can see them highlighted) and the other players in the lobby cannot see my icon at the bottom right under the "ready" button but can see me in the player list at the top right.

I used a vps with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with wine, xvfb and steamcmd to setup a dedicated server - though I could not get it to show in the steam server browser. We can join it manually though just using the console in game.

I have not had any luck with using Windows Server for ROR2 dedicated server as it never fully started.

Hi, my game crashes at start. I was able to launch it today (without pc restarting etc) once when i launched it durning updating on steam (like i checked "launch after update is done" or something like that) then when i tried now i crash every time, nothing changed, no updates of my graphic drivers, audio drivers etc. The only thing updated recently was my adobe flash or something

Have scoured the web and forums and can't seem to find a fix

i'm unable to click continue and it seems to be due to the windows cursor and game cursor overlapping.

i have tried everything i can think of including reinstalling the game twice, restarting pc, setting custom launch options, closing all overlays, using ALT+ENTER, unplugging my mouse and verifying game files.

Anytime I try to play this game, the game crashes my PC. This has happened before on other games, but to a much smaller scale. I'm thinking of getting this game so I checked the PC requirements on systemrequirementslab.com and it says my CPU (AMD Ryzen 5 3550H) which is on my ASUS TUF gaming laptop can't meet minimum requirements, which is an Intel Core i3-6100 or AMD FX-8350. Idk much about computers but I thought the i3 was a pretty low-spec CPU, can my CPU actually not run this game?

Hi, uh...sorry I'm not doing a whole introduction but I have come across a huge issue regarding my RoR2 profile. I think it got corrupted or something during modding, and now things such as challenges, survivors and stuff are just...gone. Can't select any other character besides Commando, and if I do, I end up with Commando anyways. Might've been due to reckless usage of a modded character, I have no idea, but I'd like some guidance on what to do, at least

is anyone else experiencing really horrible performance degredation on what's basically top of the line parts?

I'm on a RTX 2080 Ti and a Ryzen 9 3900x, and quite randomly, my framerate will drop from a steady 144FPS to 60FPS with terrible frame times (so it actually feels more like 15fps)

hello, I've searched the chats and saw many people asking the question, but no one got an answer.
I cannot play multiplayer at all, the ready button simply makes a sound and nothing else. when joining a lobby as opposed to hosting, I can't see any player models and the chat isn't working.

Question if anybody has had this issue... Me and my friend have tried playing twice both of us hosting but its unplayable, to explain in the lobby we cannot really change characters if we do the user whos not the host cant tell this is the one lagging so me if hes hosting and him if i am... and going past that we click play and the non host doesnt spawn on time and is spectating and when you do spawn you are unable to shoot and it is freeze frame unplayable its not fps it seems more like ping but i have no clue what could cause it as we both played fine with each other during the launch of the game

Every day I check back here in the hopes that someone has found a fix as my friend bought me this game so that I could play with him and my other friends but no one has figured out the issue. I've tried everything to fix it like installing/uninstalling ror2, verifying game files, uninstalling/reinstalling c++ destributables, running in compatibility mode for every possible windows, unfriending them in steam and joing via clipboard, etc.

I've been experiencing frame stutter every time I move the camera which is strange because my FPS counter always indicates that I'm between 45-60 FPS. It's been like this since the last update and I've recently upgraded my PC and it still persists, so I know it's not an issue with my hardware.

That is strange, have you tried verifying the file cache/reinstalling? Adjusting any graphical sliders, possibly a driver incompatibility? With no error code that is a hard to figure out

I have tried:

verifying game cache
reinstalling the game
changing networks
disabling my firewall
resetting my ip and dns stuffs
inviting my friend to a lobby and accepting his invite
inviting/joining via clipboard code
joining a quickplay lobby

I'm running a GTX 1060 with all newest drivers installed, on windows 10 64 bit

stuck at start screen early access disclaimer
tried all the troubleshooting for the save files and everything. Followed all directions for every troubleshoot there is and I'm suck here regardless. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Also tried to reinstall steam. Same issue.

assuming it has to do with the different routing of the connection! seemingly, the internet tab attempts to connect from outside and unity doesn't like that. when connecting from the lan tab, all communications remain internal! hooray for astil!

My friends and I play on PS4, and occasionaly people will get booted from the game with the message "could not connect." It sometimes happens in the lobby as well, and has happened with different hosts. Is this an issue with us or has anyone else had connection issues on PS4?

GPU shouldn't be needed as the server is running just the calculation for the players connecting to it. High RAM/CPU power would be best

I turned on v-sync, when to nvidia and turned down the graphics and also enabled v-sync there, I went to the Nvidia programs setting for risk of rain 2 and turned on v-sync and turned down the graphics but nothing worked. I have the required specs (Nvidia 1060 TI, 8 gb ram, intel core i7)

So, the usual steps I give are
1: Update GPU drivers
2: Verify game cache
3: Check perforamnce metrics**

**A game can stutter for network lag reasons as well. Check the fps of the game and see if the slowdown is correlated to fps

Can you have the task manager open while playing? If so run a game and see if Processor, RAM or Disc Usgae caps at 100%

It's hard to tell with an EA game what is a glitch with the game and the system. I don't like going "just wait for a patch" but theres so many issues I am seeing across a wide variety of hardware it could just be an incompatibility issue

In the search bar at the bottom, type "dxdiag" a blue circle with a yellow X should appear. Click that and click yes on the prompt

Go there and download the file, install it. Your screen may go black for a few seconds during the install. You may not need this but I've seen non updated gpu drivers causing lots of issues.

Also, if you go to windows updates. Make sure those are all done. Microsofts dumb for updates but they can cause issues if not updated for too long

Since I got the game it has crashed on every third or fourth playthrough. I Can't figure out why. I have reinstalled GPU drivers, reinstalled the game (with antivirus off), installed it on a different drive, reinstalled windows, reinstalled DX11, done an sfc scan. I'm so lost.
