@floral dawn sounds like a hard coded frame rate cap somewhere, uncertain. Shouldn't be cpu.
CPU is generally responsible for processing general movements of things in the space.
GPU handles rendering pictures together, and sometimes physics/parallel computations.

@floral dawn oh and check Windows display settings. Sometimes Windows misreads the monitor and uses a suboptimal framerate, in my case it sets my 60hz monitor to 59, and it screws my "syncing"

@rancid comet You could also check in the in-game console what's actually happening (or rather not happening) when trying to hit Quickplay. You open the console by pressing CTRL+ALT+the key under ESC.

You could also take a peek at the crash log. If the game crashes it will generate a Dump file. The file is located at:
C:\Users<UserName>\AppData\LocalLow\Hopoo Games, LLC\Risk of Rain 2\Crashes\crash.dmp

@gritty abyss had the same issue yesterday with a friend. Tried to fix it for over an hour and it turned out to be a network issue. Friend had to connect from another WiFi and it worked, original wasn't working for some reason.

An issue I've been having that is frustrating:
The game lags out and disconnects me from the lobby consistently within 45 minutes of a run, if not less, without the option to reconnect (trying to do so results in a black screen before returning to the main menu). I've had this happen on two different wifi networks since I have moved, both of which gave me a solid 40mbps at least. My connection on this computer has never been severed in such a way, even in more intensive games. When I try and host a game, the same thing happens eventually except it boots all the players and doesn't let them reconnect. Does anyone else have this issue or know how to solve it?
Or is it simply an early access issue?

ok so none of the monster or character models are loading in correctly in the log book, I've toyed with the settings but nothing affects it, it seems to be more of a texture loading issue though as the effect when they teleport in is played over the model as it is transparent when the viewer first loads

Hey there, got an optimization problem, I got a pc that should run the game smoothly at least on low settings (that's a laptop msi,, i7-6700HQ, gtx 960M, 8gigz ram) but it seems that it can't handle the game at all. I tried some stuff found on the internet like using the nvidia control panel settings etc. but even on the first level it starts to heat a lot and fps drops so much that it becomes unplayable quickly, any of you guys got a solution for this ?

Not really.
It's engine related. They hope to fix it soon. Installing on an SSD will at least alleviate the issue; on some rigs that fare better doing so eliminates it entirely.

Not sure if this is a bug or not, but I got the game last night, played a bit but I logged back on today, and all my progress was wiped. My internet is spotty as hell, and sometimes gets stuck in limbo, and I think that is the issue.
I unlocked the bow person too, so I wanted to try that character out, and I don't want to grind it out if it will just wipe again.

@carmine arrow The issue where some people can't join multiplayer (private or public) is being reported rather frequently. You guys should definitely look into this if you haven't already. Since I'm not experiencing it myself I can't get to the cause of it either.

There are a few users who reported that problem. As to why it's happening, I don't know.
Port forwarding shouldn't be necessary.
Though it sounds like a NAT/router/firewall issue.
If you do try it again, try to join while the in-game console is open to see it logging whatever is happening. (CTRL+ALT+key under ESC).

Hm. Then I would suggest to start with a clean slate. Uninstall all mods. Fresh new RoR2 install. Then reinstall exactly the mods your friends are having.
Once Steam Workshop is supported, all of that nonsense is hopefully in the past.

If you don't have a restricted NAT or other firewall issues, try to restart your PC. Users have been reporting that the next morning it "magically" seemed to work for no apparent reason.

@prime harness try going into the compatibility settings for the game by right clicking and going into properties, and make sure "display scaling on high dpi settings" is off, it's known to cause issues with mouse acceleration if its somehow turned on

Hello. So i was bored and decided to check out the cheats.. (not a good start i know lol). so i went ahead and inserted "<unlock>Items.Lightning</unlock>" into the CTRL + ALT + ` tab.. Hey all, Has anyone else had issues with random fps drops? Or loss of frames on very long runs such as with 2 daggers and a brilliant behemoth? I have a ryzen 2700x with an rtx 2080, 16 gigs ram. You can improve cooling or dust off the interior, etc. Basic stuff. Just to be clear this is a hardware issue unrelated to RoR2 which just manages to tax the CPU more in the later stages of the game.

The system will lock up automatically once the CPU or GPU reaches a certain temperature. Use MSI Afterburner to monitor them and act accordingly. Otherwise your system won't last long under stress.

Me and my friend have been trying to play together over and over again but...
Whenever he tries to join my lobby, It says he connects, but he gets stuck at a lobby screen that only shows him and then about 20 seconds later takes him back to the menu
When I try to join his lobby, the same thing happens

My other friend is able to connect to his lobby and my lobby with no issues, and we can both join his lobby and play together that way
Why would our games specifically not be compatible?
Do any devs or mods have an explanation for this I just don't understand why this would happen...

Hi Really new. Can someone copy paste the black screen/ white screen fix for me if that has been solved. I'm Using an acer aspire R5-571TG, 12 gb ram, 64bit os. I already white-listed the game on my firewall and even turned off my antivirus. I already validated the gave files several times. I Updated my steam, computer, all of my drivers that i could possibly find and my Nvidia driver. The only way I've ever even been able to play the game is to launch it on my laptop, press alt enter, Plug in an external monitor, then press alt enter again. Only after all of that am I able to see and play the game. No other issues other than that it I can't see the game without jumping through these hoops. Pls help

I suggest sending both your reports in to Hopoo Games. It seems the game can't create a certain texture. Make sure to verify game files before doing so however; oftentimes the most obvious is at fault.

thats a recurring problem ive had is a file failing to validate, ive reinstalled, reastarted my pc, disabled my antivirus, everything and i still get this error evewn with reinstalls, and the only place that the game is showing up is in local low, not local, and even then i inly get the output logs, did i recive a bigged copy or something? because no matter how many times ive reinstalled with my antivirus disabled and restarted my pc i always have one file fail to validate, and when it crashes i never get a crash dump, and i have contacted them directly and theyve asked fro crash dumps, of which do not exist on my pc so im not really sure what to do from here

@jovial bluff I haven't been able to test this again but try getting your friend to run a lobby, then they start the game without you but with one slot free. You use the steam friends list to Join Game while they're playing and it should add you to their game as a spectator. Then get them to die/end the round. It should boot you into their lobby without disconnect errors

Yes, but then go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common , and if there is still a file called Risk of Rain 2, delete that. Then, re-install from steam. Your pc should run it just fine, unless you're using some sort of program that is inadvertently killing your Dpi.
But first, if you have any progress on your game, Backup the user profile

User data is normally in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\311713842\632360\remote\UserProfiles. There should be a file for your profile. Poke around in there and you can change some things.

Have been having problems with v slow mouse movement since i got the game but now that is resolved by hard uninstall and re-install. Now i can get to singleplayer game and press E to get out of the pod, but then my perspective on the world looks wierd and it is unplayable. I see the outline of my character but i am very close to it and can see what is around me, only up or down. I get enemies who walk up to me and bash me and the game is over. Any idea how to resolve this please ?

Today's patch has locked the frame rate to 60 FPS by default. You should be able to disable that however in the Settings menu somewhere.

when I start a single player game, the pod lands, I press E to escape but then the point of view points down and all the character is doing is looking at the ground. I can drag the mouse and the view changes to normal view of the world, but then the point of view drops down so he is again looking at his toes.
There are separate settings for Keyboard and Controller, with those on the Controller part showing as UNKNOWN which is ok. But these UNKN appear in my game . It is almost as if the game is thinking I have a controller connected. and not a keyboard. Is there a way to tell it I am not using Controller ?

Is anyone else dealing with massive framerate drops after the update? I see like one or two people mention this. I was capable of running the game just fine before I updated but now its pretty much unplayable. I even tried changing settings and it doesn't seem to help. Main menu is laggy, character selection lags for like 7 seconds each time a character model loads, and the game is super laggy. I have a Ryzen 5 2600, RX580, and 16GB of ram. I fired up Tekken 7, a game I'm sure is technically more demanding and It runs perfectly fine, 60 fps.

I just figured out my lag problem. It was the Microsoft Gamebar causing it. Not sure if the lag happened because of the game updating or windows updating but I used to use gamebar because recording 30 second clips on the fly was pretty nice but eh.

Hello! So I play multiplayer most of the time with my bf (he's the host) and everything is all smooth and no problems at all during the first 60 mins of the game. But whenever the game keeps going on after that, I experience a lot of desync/delay in the game. For example, he activates the teleporter and beats the boss but the desync is so bad that on my screen he only activates it after 5-10 mins. Another example is when he moves to the next map and can just instantly do anything while I have to wait still for my character to move to the next map and there'll be a black screen for a while before I appear in the next map. Is there a fix to this?

I decided to edit the in-game text. I was able to successfully edit the text of the items and survivors. However, when I edited an equipment item such as the disposable missiles, it won't show it's name, but rather EQUIPMENT_COMMANDMISSILE_NAME. I tried changing it back, but that didn't work

I've been struggling with joining friends lobbies and now after running the game in administrator and also verifying game files and uninstalling and reinstalling game and restarting pc I can now join there lobby, the only problem is that the ready up button is very inconsistent with when it is actually pressed. whenever other people ready up, the bar that says how many seconds are left counts down super slow. it will take 30 seconds for 1 second to pass on the thing and when it finally reaches zero i black screen and all my sound goes away. In the mean time all my friends are in the game running around. Please help.
Also now I'm now having a problem where when I join the party, my new fourth friend is immediately kicked out of the party and is then unable to join the lobby any more.

I have a friend who doesn't use discord that is currently experiencing a relatively high importance issue with regards to playability. He is experiencing vastly fluctuating frames, between 20-30 fps and his monitor's refresh rate, at 144. He has turned down the settings in game to see if this would fix the issue, and it has not. He doesn't have anything superfluous in the background running, and I had him uninstall the game, and reinstall, as well as reinstall graphics drivers using DDU. Changing refresh rate, resolution, graphics settings, or enabling/disabling various graphical settings, such as v-sync, fullscreen, an fps limit, or graphics settings changes does not change his performance.
He did not have an issue with fluctuating framerate with the previous patch. He also has not had a difference in performance in other games, including other Unity games.
He has a GTX 1080 on the latest driver update, 430.64, and a I7-5930K. I've racked my brains with tech support issues, but can't figure out the issue for the life of me. Help me, @carmine arrow , you're my only hope.
Or anyone else involved with the development of RoR2. None of my friends are experiencing an issue with fluctuating framerates, and we all have baller PCs.
I have gone through everything that I can think of to resolve the issue on his end, but it has only occurred since the most recent update.

So.. I play the game on a dual screen setup, when I'm in the menu my mouse gets random accelerations and then gets out of the screen, when I move it back toward the window, the mouse moves on both screens. When in game, the camera constantly points to the ground. I have deleted all mods, reinstalled the game and the issue still occurs, is this a known issue?

I installed some mods and they are supposed to create a new config files for each in “Risk of Rain 2\BepInEx\config”, after you launch the game, it opens a new window called “BepInEx 5.0.0.0.0” saying for some mods that it miss some dependecies (com.bepis.r2api), that i do tho have in the config folder.
-i putted >bepinex(folder)+winhttp.dll+doorstop< in the risk of rain 2 steam folder (next to the .exe)
-then putted all the mods .dll in “Risk of Rain 2\BepInEx\plugins”, only the .dll.

under summary->build arficats->r2api, inside there is a "plugins" and "monomod" folder, overwrite the bepinex ones with those 2 and should work hopefully for you too 😄

Are there dedicated gaming servers? I continuously get booted mid game and pushed out to the menu screen, or are we playing on someones computer? This is a definite issue, just becuse someone leaves a game the other players shouldnt worry about the game quitting

the developers could avoid a dedicated server system by simply creating a more robust matchmaking system
like a lobby hosting system where you can see your connection to the host before you join and have lobby titles and descriptions and whatnot
also making it so when the host leaves you don't get booted from the game
there's supposedly a mod that allows people to join your games after they have started and give them a random set of items based on like the average amount of items people have in the game as they join

Yes. For User Experience sake dedicated servers are a must. Anyone can quit out at any time. You yourself, Im guessing you are not a dev? have to wait until you have a crown. What a pita. There are too many variables when its p2p, at least you can gain some of the paly experience when AWS is implemented (just a suggestion)
And no... you cant keep it this way. A large percentage of people will just leave and not come back. The game is exceptional.. Only other issue is greed. Some characters run faster and those people hit all the loot boxes. If it can be made more team oriented, not sure how to manage that

Yo. So my gf and I bought the game a few days ago and have been completely unable to play together, whether through Steam invites or clipboard lobby in game. There's times when I can see her in the party when I invite her, there's times where she can see me, but never have we each been able to confirm that we are in the same lobby. When one of us can see the other and they click quick play, I get a black screen for a few moments before being kicked back to the main screen, sometimes to the multiplayer lobby. We've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, verifying files and running as admin, even though I don't see how that last one would help. I'm able to play with others while she is not. Getting pretty close to refunding both copies of the game and not touching it again. Has anyone had a similar issue or know of a fix?

@true geode Have you tried clicking Start a Private Game and let the other player join through the clipboard ID? Your issue could also be network- or connection-related. It might also be a restricted NAT issue.

so in the menu my mouse is lined up with the cursor in risk of rain 2, and the mouse shows up on my other monitor, and when i go into a game im stuck facing down and all the keybinds say unknown. it also automatically makes you run in a circle and spams m1.

On the latest Proton the game doesn't launch via Steam and instead shows the crash report dialog. If I launch it directly it actually runs but it has a black background and the actual game doesn't render.

My friend and I just bought the game and we are trying to play together and neither of us can join the other person's lobby. we have tried the clipboard, and joining through steam. either way we do it, we click the join button and then literally nothing happens. the quickplay does not seem to be working for me either. I still need help to fix my game, i recently moved and once I got my setup back in place my game decided to stop running it's usual 45-60 fps but it's now only going 8-11 fps in the main menu. It won't move from that, everything is laggy, the mouse is definitely seconds behind my actual movement, and all I want to do is play while I still have time off from work

I'm currently experiencing an issue where the game seems to be dropping the last 10 frames or so it's supposed to be showing at the end of every second, trying a bunch of stuff to fix it currently, but if anyone knows the exact issue, i'd love a shortcut. It also seems to not want to save the refresh rate i'm telling it to display at, reverting it back to 59hz whenever i leave the menu.
also dealer, while messing around with settings, i noticed something similar happens to me when i set vertical sync to half. have you tried changing that setting?
update: Pretty sure the issue was that my gamecube controller adapter was still somehow being read as controllers despite having already been installed, and when i forcefully ejected the drivers it seemed to fix the frame dropping. Unfortunately, i still can't get the game to save the higher refresh rate. At least 60 fps is playable

My monitor's refresh rate is 144hz. The issue is that it's not allowing me to change it from 59hz in the RoR2 video settings, higher or lower. Definitely seems to be an issue with the RoR2 client to me, seeing as I play other games at 144hz.

@fiery idol Disabling the in-game framerate limiter and V-sync should fix your problem. Also make sure that under Windows your monitor's refresh rate indeed shows only 144Hz.

I tried setting the frame rate limit to off and to 120, but either way I was still capped at 60, and my monitor is set at 144hz. I'm honestly not too worried about it at this point, though.

Unfortunately there is no way yet. You'd have to start with a clean slate, see the pinned messages and/or cheat back in the achievements and unlocks manually:
We've generally narrowed down the issue to your Save data being corrupted. This may be caused because you shut the game down abruptly or another issue occured. Please note that this will wipe your save file contents. If you want, back it up elsewhere.
- First, make sure Risk of Rain 2 is closed.
- Restart Steam.
- Next, locate the folder that your userprofiles are saved in. This is typically in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata(ACCOUNTNUMBER)\632360\remote\UserProfiles"
- There should be an xml file in there with a bunch of random characters, i.e 2919dc8a-fd4c-4c3c-bd7d-8aeeac67b831.xml. Open the .xml file in Notepad.
- Go to https://pastebin.com/BQkjgRrK and copy the contents of the Pastebin INTO the .xml file, REPLACING ALL THE EXISTING CONTENT. Press Save.
- Reopen the game in Steam.
Please let me know if this works - we will be patching the game in the future to work around this, but for now this should at least let you enjoy the game.

hello! I pirated this game because I wasn't sure if I'd like it, and after a couple of games I absolutely did, so I deleted it and purchased it from Steam. Well, the pirated version ran fine, and the Steam version instantly crashes on startup.

Whenever my friend gets to the later stages his pc crashes.He has good specs and he's reinstalled the game several times to no avail.

Maybe my tv being my monitor with HDMI affects this? I tried making my 980M my dedicated PhysX GPU but it still shows the TV running on the integrated graphics so that MAY be a factor?!

@dire spruce Make sure to set your discrete GPU as your main device in the nVidia Control Panel, not some integrated graphics (which are not supported btw).
@rich belfry Please make sure that your Window System Clock's Timezone is NOT Invalid. If that does not fix it, please uninstall THEN reinstall VC++ 2015, shown here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145. Also make sure that Steamworks Common Redistributales are installed and up-to-date in Steam.

@dire spruce Well, it is a mobile GPU which never bodes well. Please make sure to update your Graphics Drivers, disable any Antivirus, and restart your PC. Afterwards, reinstall the game!
@upper panther Upon crashing the game should create an output log and a crash dump. Please post those here or send them in to Hopoo Games as they contain more information as to why the crash occurred.

@proper horizon we discovered it was a program called "ai suite" causing his pc to crash. so if anyone else has ai suite and is crashing that could be the reason

I've followed all the instructions in the pins and some guides online and my game still starts running worse early into the game, and running really bad later on
neither my GPU (GTX 1080) nor CPU (Ryzen 7) are anywhere near to maxing out

Hello. I tried searching for answers from previous users in this channel. But I think its best if I still contact to see what's the issues with my type of computer specs. Before I didn't lag at all, I don't know when it started lagging.
Processor: Intel Core i7-67000k CPU [at] 4.00 GHz 4.01 GHz
Video Card: GeForce GTX 1070
RAM: 16 GB
I am able to play other games that are much bigger files than this game without any lag/glitch. Like GTA, LoL, Dota, OW, and so forth. It shows my FPS below 50 on here, but my FPS is fine in other things whether gaming or not.

Still need help with not able to join quick play or anybodys lobby. My friend experiences this as well. No mods. Fresh reinstall. Sits spinning in quick play search and joining lobbies does nothing.

@orchid flame What's your average FPS? Did you disable V-sync and the in-game FPS limiter?
@potent ibex I fear you'll have to start with a clean slate, with a brand-new profile since yours is corrupted. This may be caused because you shut the game down abruptly or another issue occured. Please note that this will wipe your save file contents. If you want, back it up elsewhere.
- First, make sure Risk of Rain 2 is closed.
- Restart Steam.
- Next, locate the folder that your userprofiles are saved in. This is typically in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata(ACCOUNTNUMBER)\632360\remote\UserProfiles"
- There should be an xml file in there with a bunch of random characters, i.e 2919dc8a-fd4c-4c3c-bd7d-8aeeac67b831.xml. Open the .xml file in Notepad.
- Go to https://pastebin.com/BQkjgRrK and copy the contents of the Pastebin INTO the .xml file, REPLACING ALL THE EXISTING CONTENT. Press Save.
- Reopen the game in Steam.

@south charm Did you guys try to join via the clipboard ID feature where one player hosts a private game and shares his server's ID? If not, please try that with the in-game console open to see what's happening (CTRL+ALT+key under ESC).
It's probably down to a connection, network, firewall or restricted NAT issue, though.

I have vsync disabled, but idk how to disable in-game frame limiter.
towards the beginning, my fps hovers around 121 (even though cap is 120) and goes down to ~110 once the first few enemies appear. in the first teleporter event, it goes to ~90, and it keeps declining like this over time until it's at less than 40fps in the second rallypoint delta, and the one time I got to 2nd abysmal depths it was ~20-30 fluctuating
would disabling the frame limiter help somehow, or would it just be for testing purposes?
I'm using G-SYNC too if that matters

@orchid flame Well, the later in the game, the more taxing the scenes get due to an insane number of enemies spawning and stuff happening. I doubt G-sync will do you any good here since you can't keep the frame-rate consistent enough for G-sync trigger well. The game also gets very CPU-intensive. I'm surprised, though, that your performance is that bad. I'd make double-sure to disable any background apps, and forego G-Sync in this one.

the cpu is bottlenecking everything else

I just tested it with my Xbox 360 controller. I can't come to the same conclusion. The diagonals are perfectly compared to the cardinal directions. Nothing at issue here that I could observe. Could it be a Dual Shock 4 issue then?
